Chapter 5: The Brother’s Confession
Daniel stared at the document like it was a weapon.
“Michael signed this?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he forged this?””
Her silence became unbearable.
“You knew.””
Margaret sat down.
“I knew he was trying to fix things.””
“Fix?””
My voice cracked.
“You call this fixing?””
I pointed toward the room.
The photographs.
The records.
The lies.
“You erased my daughter.””
Margaret’s face tightened.
“I saved my family.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“You destroyed it.””
Margaret looked at him.
“You would have lost everything.””
“I lost everything when you decided my child was a problem.””
For a moment, she looked hurt.
Then the old Margaret returned.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at me.
“It started before Lily was born.””
I crossed my arms.
“Of course it did.””
“Michael believed Emily betrayed you.””
“I didn’t.””
“He believed it.””
“And you believed him?””
Margaret looked down.
“Michael has always been protective of this family.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Protective?””
He looked around the room.
“This is obsession.””
A sound came from the hallway.
A floorboard creaked.
All three of us turned.
Nobody was there.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
My blood ran cold.
A picture.
Of Lily.
Taken that morning.
At school.
The message underneath:
*Stop digging. You already lost one daughter. Don’t lose this one too.*
I couldn’t breathe.
Daniel saw my face.
“What?””
I handed him the phone.
His expression changed instantly.
“Who sent this?””
Margaret stood.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at her.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You’ve lied about everything.””
She stepped closer.
“Emily, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to tell me anything.””
Daniel grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling the police.””
Margaret didn’t stop him.
Instead, she whispered:
“They won’t help.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because Michael has already prepared for this.””
The silence returned.
Then Daniel said:
“What does that mean?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“It means he knew this day would come.””
My husband looked at me.
Then at his mother.
“How long?””
“What?””
“How long have you known Michael was doing this?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
Daniel’s voice broke.
“How long?””
“Six years.””
The confession landed harder than anything else.
Six years.
She had known.
She had watched us celebrate birthdays.
Christmas mornings.
First steps.
First words.
She had watched Lily grow.
And every time she hugged my daughter, she knew.
I stepped backward.
“I want to leave.””
Daniel nodded.
“Okay.””
But before we could walk out, Margaret said:
“There’s one more thing.””
I stopped.
“What?””
She walked toward another box.
Inside was a small recorder.
She pressed play.
A man’s voice filled the room.
Michael.
My entire body froze.
“Mom, listen carefully.””
The recording continued.
“If Daniel finds out, we have a problem.””
Margaret’s voice answered:
“He won’t.””
“He will eventually.””
“Then we handle it.””
Michael laughed softly.
A sound I would never forget.
“What about Emily?””
“She’ll break.””
“And Lily?””
A pause.
Then Michael said:
“Lily was never the goal.””
The room became silent.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
“Then what was?””
Michael’s voice continued.
“Daniel.””
My husband looked like he had been punched.
“What?””
Margaret whispered:
“He wanted to destroy you.””
I looked at the recorder.
The voice continued.
“Daniel always had everything. The perfect wife. The perfect house. The perfect life.””
A pause.
“I wanted him to know what it felt like to lose something.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Because the truth was worse than we imagined.
This was never about Lily.
It was never about DNA.
It was never about Eric.
It was revenge.
Michael wanted to hurt his own brother.
And he used my daughter as the weapon.
Daniel walked out of the room.
I followed.
Outside, he stopped beside the car.
For a moment, he just stood there.
Then he whispered:
“I failed her.””
I knew exactly who he meant.
Lily.
“You didn’t know.””
“But I should have.””
“You loved her.””
“I trusted them.””
I reached for his hand.
Then his phone rang.
He looked down.
Unknown number.
We both froze.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A voice came through.
Michael.
“Congratulations, brother.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What do you want?””
A quiet laugh.
“I want you to know the truth.””
“What truth?””
Michael paused.
Then said:
“The baby you buried six years ago…”
My heart stopped.
“Wasn’t yours.””
Daniel went completely still.
“What?””
Michael continued:
“Because the baby Margaret gave you…”
Another pause.
“Was mine.””
May you like
The call ended.
And for the second time in two days, my entire world collapsed.
