The Girl Who Was Thrown Away / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Daughter I Lost Twice

The drive felt endless.

Nobody spoke.

Not Daniel.

Not me.

Not even Michael.

He sat in the passenger seat beside Daniel, his hands cuffed after Daniel called the police.

The police were following behind us.

But none of that mattered.

Not the betrayal.

Not the arrest.

Not the years of lies.

Only one thought filled my mind.

My daughter was alive.

Somewhere.

For six years, I had mourned a child who never left me.

I had celebrated birthdays for a girl who wasn’t there.

I had looked at Lily and loved her completely.

And now I had to face something impossible.

There was another child.

My child.

Daniel reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For not seeing.””

His voice cracked.

“I should have protected you.””

“You protected me when you knew.””

He looked away.

“But I didn’t know.””

Neither of us spoke.

Because we both knew.

Not knowing didn’t erase the damage.

When we arrived at the address Michael gave us, I almost couldn’t get out of the car.

It was a small house outside the city.

Quiet.

Ordinary.

The kind of place where nothing terrible should happen.

Michael looked through the window.

“She’s inside.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel opened the door.

The police followed.

Michael whispered:

“She doesn’t know.””

I turned toward him.

“Doesn’t know what?””

“That you’re her mother.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Six years.

My daughter had lived somewhere believing I didn’t exist.

I walked toward the door.

Every step felt heavier.

A woman answered.

She looked confused.

Then afraid.

“Who are you?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Michael stepped forward.

The woman’s face changed.

“You.””

The hatred in her voice surprised me.

“You said you would never come back.””

I stared.

“Who are you?””

She looked at Michael.

Then at the police.

Then back at me.

“My name is Sarah.””

My heart pounded.

“And my daughter is inside.””

I whispered:

“Your daughter?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Michael looked down.

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“You never told her, did you?””

Nobody answered.

Then a small voice came from behind the door.

“Mom?””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not because I had heard it before.

Because something inside me recognized it.

A little girl stepped into view.

She was six years old.

She had my eyes.

My heart stopped.

The world disappeared.

She looked at me.

Confused.

Scared.

Beautiful.

I covered my mouth.

“No…”

The little girl looked at Sarah.

“Who is she?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

I couldn’t move.

Because my body knew before my mind did.

That was my daughter.

The baby I thought I lost.

The child someone stole from me.

The little girl I had searched for without knowing.

Daniel stood behind me.

Crying silently.

The little girl looked at him.

“Who are you?””

He couldn’t answer.

Because how do you introduce yourself to your child after six years?

How do you say:

I’m your father.

When you missed every birthday.

Every first step.

Every nightmare.

Every moment.

I finally whispered:

“My name is Emily.””

The girl stared.

“Why are you crying?””

I smiled through tears.

“Because I’ve been looking for you.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Her face was pale.

“She doesn’t know.””

I looked at her.

“Know what?””

Sarah looked at Michael.

Then at me.

“That she wasn’t abandoned.””

The words broke something inside me.

I dropped to my knees.

“I would never leave you.””

The girl watched me.

“I know.””

That surprised me.

“You know?””

She nodded.

“Mom told me.””

Sarah looked down.

“She always asked about her.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Sarah whispered:

“Her other mother.””

My breath caught.

“She knew?””

“She knew there was someone.””

The little girl hugged Sarah’s hand.

“She said my real mommy loved me.””

My eyes filled.

Because even after everything…

Someone had protected a piece of the truth.

I looked at Michael.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

Sarah did.

“He came to me six years ago.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You?””

Sarah nodded.

“He told me Emily abandoned her baby.””

My stomach turned.

“He lied.””

“Yes.””

Sarah looked at Michael.

“He said the child needed someone who would raise her.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you believed him.””

Sarah nodded.

“I was young. I had lost my own child.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought I was helping.””

The little girl looked at me.

“Are you really my mommy?””

I couldn’t speak.

I just nodded.

“Yes.””

She walked closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she was approaching someone she wanted to trust.

Then she reached out.

And touched my face.

“You look sad.””

I laughed through tears.

“I am.””

“Why?””

“Because I missed you.””

She studied me.

Then whispered:

“I missed you too.””

I broke.

I wrapped my arms around her.

And for the first time in six years…

I held my daughter.

But the moment didn’t last.

Because outside, a police officer’s radio suddenly crackled.

“Officer?””

Everyone turned.

The officer looked toward Michael.

“Sir.””

Michael looked up.

“What?””

The officer’s expression changed.

“We just received confirmation.””

Daniel frowned.

“Confirmation of what?””

The officer hesitated.

Then said:

“The hospital records from six years ago were not the only documents Michael changed.””

My blood ran cold.

“What else?””

The officer looked at the papers in his hand.

“He changed the paternity records.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

The officer looked at him.

“It means the baby you thought was dead…”

May you like

A pause.

“Wasn’t the only child involved.””
