The Girl Who Was Thrown Away / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Son Who Stole Everything

Daniel didn’t speak after the call ended.

He just stared at the phone.

Like it might explain what had just happened.

Like the screen might suddenly say:

*This was a joke.*

But it didn’t.

Reality stayed exactly where it was.

I reached for him.

“Daniel.””

He stepped away.

Not from me.

From everything.

“No.””

His voice was broken.

“No, this doesn’t make sense.””

Margaret came outside behind us.

She looked terrified.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

“Is it true?””

She froze.

That was all it took.

That tiny moment.

That hesitation.

Daniel saw it.

“You knew.””

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.””

He laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked at her.

“Protect me from what?””

She didn’t answer.

“From the truth?””

Still nothing.

“From my own life?””

I stood beside him.

Trying to understand how a family could become something so cruel.

Then Margaret whispered:

“Michael is lying.””

Daniel looked at her.

“About what?””

“About Lily.””

My breath caught.

“What do you mean?””

Margaret looked at me.

“I mean he was never her father.””

Daniel stared.

“But he said—”

“He says many things.””

For the first time, Margaret sounded afraid of Michael.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“He has spent years building this lie.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

And when she opened them again, she looked defeated.

“Michael was jealous of you.””

“We know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t.””

She looked at Daniel.

“When your father died, everything went to you.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“The company. The house. The trust.””

“That was because I was older.””

“Yes.””

Margaret swallowed.

“But Michael never accepted it.””

I listened quietly.

Because suddenly the story was becoming bigger.

Much bigger.

“He believed you stole his life.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“That’s insane.””

“Yes.””

Margaret nodded.

“But that’s how he thought.””

She looked toward the house.

“He didn’t want your family.””

Her voice became softer.

“He wanted your place.””

My skin crawled.

A person could hate someone.

A person could be jealous.

But this?

This was something darker.

Daniel looked at me.

“Then why did he say Lily was his?””

Margaret answered:

“Because he knew it would destroy you.””

A car engine suddenly roared outside.

We all turned.

A black SUV stopped in front of the house.

My heart jumped.

Michael stepped out.

Calm.

Confident.

Smiling.

Like he owned the street.

Daniel moved in front of me.

“You have some nerve coming here.””

Michael smiled.

“Actually, I think I have every right.””

“Leave.””

Michael ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Emily.””

I hated how calmly he said my name.

“You look tired.””

I stared at him.

“You threatened my daughter.””

His smile disappeared.

“I warned you.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re done.””

Michael laughed.

“Am I?””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a folder.

And tossed it onto the hood of the car.

Daniel didn’t move.

“What is that?””

“The real DNA test.””

My stomach dropped.

Michael looked at me.

“You wanted the truth.””

He pointed at the folder.

“There it is.””

Daniel picked it up.

I watched his face change as he read.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Pain.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

Michael smiled.

“Read it.””

Daniel looked at me.

His eyes were full of fear.

Then he whispered:

“Emily…”

I couldn’t breathe.

“What does it say?””

He looked down again.

And then he said the words I had feared since this nightmare began.

“It says Lily isn’t my daughter.””

Silence.

Michael watched us.

Satisfied.

But then Daniel kept reading.

His expression changed.

Confusion replaced the pain.

“Wait.””

Michael frowned.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“This isn’t possible.””

Michael’s smile faded.

“What?””

Daniel held up the paper.

“The sample date.””

Michael went still.

“What about it?””

Daniel looked at the report again.

“This sample was collected two years ago.””

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel whispered:

“You weren’t testing Lily.””

Michael’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You were testing yourself.””

The confidence disappeared from Michael’s eyes.

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.

Because Daniel had finally noticed the one mistake Michael never expected anyone to find.

The DNA report wasn’t proving Lily belonged to Michael.

It was proving something else.

Something hidden for six years.

Daniel turned the page.

And read the final line.

His voice barely existed.

“Michael…”

May you like

He looked at his brother.

“Why does this say you are not my father’s biological son?””
