Chapter 9: The Woman They Tried to Erase

Daniel placed the phone on speaker.

"Richard, what exactly does this document authorize?""

Richard answered immediately.

"It attempts to establish that Evelyn has voluntarily relinquished her financial interests and that Vanessa has been appointed to manage the remaining assets.""

"But Mom never signed it.""

"I know. That's why the bank has suspended the request.""

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

She was staring at the screen with a hand pressed against her chest.

"Can they stop it permanently?""

"We'll need to file a formal fraud report and provide evidence. I've already contacted the bank's legal department.""

Daniel nodded.

"Do it.""

Richard lowered his voice.

"There's something else. The document includes a witness declaration.""

"Whose?""

A pause.

"Patricia's.""

Daniel looked toward the older woman.

She was standing beside the fireplace, her face expressionless.

"Put that declaration in writing," Daniel said.

"I want everything.""

"I'll send it.""

The call ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Patricia picked up her handbag.

"I think I've stayed long enough.""

Daniel stepped toward the front door.

"You're not leaving with any documents.""

She laughed.

"Are you going to search me?""

"No. I'm going to call the police if you attempt to remove anything belonging to my mother.""

Patricia's expression hardened.

"You have no idea who you're dealing with.""

Daniel opened the door.

"I know exactly who I'm dealing with.""

Patricia looked toward Vanessa.

"Come on. We're leaving.""

Vanessa didn't move.

"Vanessa!""

Her daughter remained beside the sofa.

Daniel watched the exchange.

For the first time, Vanessa seemed unsure which side she wanted to stand on.

Patricia finally left.

The door closed behind her.

Daniel turned toward his wife.

"Sit down.""

Vanessa obeyed.

He placed the forged declaration on the table.

"Why did you do this?""

She stared at the paper.

"I was trying to fix everything.""

"By declaring my mother had abandoned the house?""

"She was going to leave anyway!""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

Vanessa looked up.

"You heard her. She was looking for somewhere else to live. I thought if she moved out, things would become easier.""

"For whom?""

"For everyone!""

Daniel shook his head.

"She was looking for somewhere else because you made her feel unwanted.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I know.""

"No. I don't think you do.""

He pointed toward Evelyn.

"Look at her. She spent her life taking care of people. She worked herself sick so I could have an education. She sold things that mattered to her so I could have a future.""

His voice broke.

"And you made her feel like she didn't deserve a seat at dinner.""

Vanessa began crying.

"I didn't mean for it to go this far.""

"Then where were you planning to stop?""

She said nothing.

Daniel sat opposite her.

"Tell me about the money.""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Patricia's company was in trouble. She owed suppliers, banks, and several private lenders. Andrew knew about Lily and threatened to expose everything unless we paid him.""

"So you paid him with my mother's money?""

"Some of it.""

"And the rest?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Patricia used it to settle business debts.""

Daniel stared.

"How much of my mother's money is left?""

"Almost nothing.""

Evelyn made a small sound.

Daniel turned toward her.

"Mom?""

She shook her head.

"I worked for every dollar in that account.""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I know.""

"No, you don't," Evelyn whispered.

"Your father-in-law worked nights to make sure we could retire without worrying. He wanted me to have something of my own.""

Vanessa began crying harder.

"I was going to repay you.""

Evelyn looked at her.

"With what? Money you planned to take from Daniel?""

Vanessa had no answer.

Daniel stood.

"You're going to give Richard every document you have. You're going to provide access to the accounts. And you're going to stop contacting my mother about her money.""

Vanessa looked up.

"Are you divorcing me?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

He looked at Ethan's photograph on the mantel.

Then he looked at the woman he'd once promised to love forever.

"I don't know what happens to our marriage after this.""

Vanessa reached for his hand.

"Daniel, please. Twelve years.""

He gently pulled away.

"Twelve years, Vanessa. And you spent part of them making my mother afraid of you.""

He walked toward the stairs.

Ethan was sitting on the landing.

Daniel crouched beside him.

"Hey, buddy.""

"Is Mom going to prison?""

Daniel took a breath.

"I don't know. The people who investigate these things will decide what happened.""

Ethan looked toward the living room.

"Are you going to leave her?""

Daniel rested a hand on his son's shoulder.

"I promise you this. Whatever happens, you will never have to choose between loving your parents.""

Ethan nodded slowly.

Then he whispered, "Can we find Lily?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Yes.""

"Really?""

"Really.""

The next morning, Richard arrived at the house with two investigators and a folder of bank records.

They interviewed Evelyn first.

She sat in the living room, wearing a clean cream-colored blouse.

Daniel stayed beside her.

One investigator, Detective Harris, spoke gently.

"Mrs. Carter, did you authorize any of the transfers from your savings?""

"No.""

"Did you sign documents allowing Vanessa to manage your money?""

Evelyn thought carefully.

"I signed something she said was related to household insurance. I never agreed to give her my savings.""

"Did you receive any money in return?""

"No.""

"Did you understand that your signature was being used to change the ownership of your account?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"No. I was told it was routine paperwork.""

The investigator made a note.

Then he asked something unexpected.

"Did anyone ever threaten you?""

Evelyn glanced toward Vanessa.

Her daughter-in-law was sitting at the other end of the room.

"Not directly.""

"Did anyone make you feel that you couldn't ask for food, money, or assistance?""

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"Yes.""

Daniel looked down.

The investigator waited.

Finally, Evelyn spoke.

"Sometimes I was told there wasn't enough food. Sometimes I was told I was expensive to keep. I started eating less because I didn't want to be a problem.""

Detective Harris exchanged a glance with his colleague.

"Thank you, Mrs. Carter. That information is important.""

After the interview, Richard pulled Daniel aside.

"We have enough evidence to challenge the financial transfers. The forged property authorization is also being examined.""

"What's next?""

"First, we secure your mother's remaining assets. Then we address the trust.""

Daniel nodded.

"And Lily?""

Richard opened another folder.

"I've located Andrew Miller. He's living in Oregon. But there's a complication.""

"What?""

"He's already been contacted by someone.""

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"Patricia.""

Daniel immediately called Margaret.

She answered quickly.

"Daniel, I was just about to call you.""

"Patricia contacted Andrew?""

"Yes. She offered him money to disappear again.""

"How much?""

"Fifty thousand dollars.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Where is he now?""

"Still in Oregon. But I managed to speak with him.""

"And?""

Margaret hesitated.

"He wants to meet you.""

"Why?""

"He says he has something that belongs to your father.""

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

"What?""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"An original recording. Your father made it shortly before he died. Andrew says it contains the truth about the trust, the money, and why Lily was never legally adopted.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Can you arrange the meeting?""

"I already have.""

"When?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

"Where?""

"At Andrew's attorney's office in Portland.""

Daniel nodded.

Then Margaret added:

"There's one condition.""

"What?""

"Andrew refuses to meet you alone. He wants Chloe there, and he wants Vanessa present.""

Daniel looked toward his wife.

"Why Vanessa?""

Margaret was silent for a moment.

"Because Andrew claims your wife wasn't the person who originally planned the financial fraud.""

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"He says Vanessa was following instructions from someone else.""

Daniel looked at the kitchen, where Patricia had sat the previous night.

"Who?""

Margaret answered.

"Your father.""

Daniel stopped breathing.

"That's impossible.""

"That's what Andrew claims. He says your father knew about the financial arrangements and secretly approved the first transfers.""

Daniel stared at the wall.

His father had left letters warning him about deception.

He had created a trust to protect Ethan.

He had investigated Vanessa.

And now a man who had blackmailed the family was claiming that the entire story had been built on a lie.

"Margaret, are you sure?""

"No. That's why we need the recording.""

Daniel ended the call.

He stood motionless for several seconds.

Then Evelyn approached.

"What's wrong, sweetheart?""

He looked at her.

"Andrew says Dad may have known about the money.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"Your father would never have stolen from me.""

"I know.""

She reached for his hand.

"Then don't let anyone make you doubt the man he was.""

Daniel nodded.

But that evening, as he reviewed the documents Richard had delivered, he found something he hadn't noticed before.

A handwritten note attached to one of his father's bank statements.

First payment authorized. Second payment disputed. Third payment made without my knowledge.

Daniel read it twice.

Beneath it was a date.

The first payment had been made while his father was still alive.

The second had been disputed.

And the third had been made after his father's death.

Daniel looked at the bank records.

The first payment was $50,000.

The second was $75,000.

The third was $200,000.

All three had gone to accounts connected to Andrew Miller.

But the account number on the third payment wasn't Andrew's.

It belonged to Patricia.

Daniel slowly leaned back.

Someone had used his father's name to authorize a payment after he died.

And the person who had signed the authorization wasn't Vanessa.

It was Richard Hayes.

Daniel immediately called the attorney.

"Richard, I need you to explain something.""

"What's happened?""

Daniel held up the bank statement.

"Why is your signature on a $200,000 transfer made after my father's death?""

Silence.

Then Richard spoke.

"Daniel, listen to me carefully.""

His voice sounded different now.

"Before you make any accusations, you need to see the original recording.""

"Why?""

"Because I didn't authorize that transfer.""

Daniel stared at the signature.

"Then who did?""

Richard took a shaky breath.

"Your father gave someone else access to his legal authorization before he died.""

"Who?""

May you like

Richard's answer came quietly.

"Your mother.""
