Chapter 7: The Secret Evelyn Carried

Evelyn appeared at the top of the staircase wearing her blue cardigan.

She looked from Daniel to Vanessa, then to Patricia, who was standing beside the fireplace with her handbag clutched against her chest.

"What's happened, sweetheart?""

Daniel held his phone tightly.

"Mom, I need you to tell me something.""

Evelyn slowly descended the stairs.

"All right.""

"Did you ever sign adoption papers for a baby named Lily?""

The color drained from her face.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa immediately turned away.

"Daniel, please. Don't do this.""

But Daniel wasn't looking at his wife anymore.

He was looking at the woman who had raised him.

"Mom?""

Evelyn reached the bottom of the staircase and sat down.

Her hands trembled in her lap.

"Your father told me this day might come.""

Daniel pulled a chair toward her.

"Then please tell me what happened.""

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

"Fourteen years ago, Vanessa came to me one evening. She was pregnant, and she was terrified.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Mom, you don't have to explain.""

Evelyn looked at her.

"Yes, darling. I do.""

She continued.

"She told me she had made a terrible mistake. She said the baby's father had disappeared, and she was afraid you would leave her if you found out.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"She was already married to me.""

"I know.""

"She was pregnant with another man's child while I was working in Chicago?""

Evelyn nodded.

"I didn't know the whole story at first.""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"I was young. I was scared.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"You were twenty-four, Vanessa. And you were married.""

"I know!""

"Did you ever consider telling me?""

She said nothing.

Evelyn reached for Daniel's hand.

"Please let me finish.""

He sat back.

Evelyn looked down at her fingers.

"Vanessa said she couldn't raise the baby. Andrew had promised to help, but he wanted nothing to do with the responsibility. She was afraid of losing you, and Patricia was afraid of the scandal.""

Patricia suddenly spoke.

"We were trying to protect everyone.""

Evelyn turned toward her.

"No, Patricia. You were trying to protect your reputation.""

Patricia's mouth fell open.

Evelyn continued.

"Vanessa asked me to help arrange the adoption. She said she wanted the baby to have a stable home. I contacted a woman at the church who knew a reputable adoption agency.""

Daniel frowned.

"Then why did you sign the papers?""

"Because Vanessa told me she couldn't bring herself to face the agency representatives. She begged me to help with the preliminary paperwork.""

"Did you know Andrew was the biological father?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"Not then.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you know Vanessa had lied about the baby dying?""

Evelyn began crying.

"Not at first.""

She reached into her cardigan pocket and removed a small photograph.

It showed a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.

On the back was a handwritten message.

To Evelyn, the only person who tried to make sure I had a chance.

Daniel took it.

"Who gave you this?""

Evelyn looked toward Vanessa.

"Andrew.""

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"That's enough!""

Evelyn flinched.

Daniel immediately rose.

"Don't shout at her.""

Vanessa pressed her hands against her temples.

"She doesn't understand what she's talking about!""

Evelyn looked directly at her.

"I understand that you asked me to help you find a family for Lily. I understand that you told me she had been adopted. And I understand that you came back months later asking me to sign another document.""

Daniel turned.

"Another document?""

Evelyn nodded.

"You said it was necessary to finalize the adoption. You told me the agency needed a witness.""

"Did you sign it?""

Evelyn hesitated.

"Yes.""

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"Did you read it?""

"I tried. But Vanessa said it was only a confirmation of the earlier agreement.""

Margaret's words returned to him.

The adoption papers were signed by someone other than Vanessa.

"Mom, did you ever find out what you signed?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"No. Until your father showed me something.""

She stood slowly and walked toward the small cabinet beside the fireplace.

From the bottom drawer, she removed an old leather folder.

"I kept these because I was afraid something wasn't right.""

Daniel opened it.

Inside were copies of documents, handwritten notes, and a letter from Andrew Miller.

He read the first page.

The adoption agency had never received the final consent paperwork.

Instead, the documents had been used to establish a temporary guardianship arrangement.

Andrew had remained Lily's legal guardian.

And Evelyn's signature had been used to support a separate financial application.

Daniel looked up.

"What financial application?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Margaret's voice came through Daniel's phone.

"Daniel, are you still there?""

"Yes.""

"Have you found the original paperwork?""

Daniel looked at the folder.

"Yes.""

"Look for a document dated September fourteenth. Your father believed that document connected Lily's guardianship to the trust.""

Daniel searched through the papers.

He found it.

A form titled FAMILY BENEFICIARY DECLARATION.

Beneath Lily's name was a section identifying the responsible guardian.

Andrew Miller.

But the next section was even more disturbing.

It listed the intended source of financial support.

*Carter Family Investment Trust.*

Daniel stared.

"What is this?""

Margaret answered.

"Your father discovered that Andrew and Vanessa had attempted to establish Lily as a beneficiary without following the trust's requirements.""

Richard's voice suddenly came through the phone.

He had joined the call.

"Daniel, there's something else. Your father never approved that declaration. The signature beside his name is forged.""

Daniel looked at the document again.

His father's name was there.

But the handwriting was wrong.

"Who submitted it?""

Margaret answered.

"Vanessa.""

Daniel turned toward his wife.

She was standing motionless beside the sofa.

"You tried to put Lily on my father's trust?""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"She was your family.""

"She wasn't my child.""

"She was my daughter!""

"And you never told me she existed!""

Vanessa began crying again.

"I was trying to make sure she had a future.""

"With money that didn't belong to you?""

"Your father had millions!""

"That doesn't give you the right to steal from my mother!""

Patricia stepped forward.

"Daniel, you're missing the bigger picture.""

He turned toward her.

"Then explain it.""

Patricia took a breath.

"Andrew wasn't supposed to keep the money. He was supposed to use it for Lily.""

Daniel stared.

"Then why did he demand $300,000?""

Patricia looked away.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"Because Andrew was threatening me.""

Daniel turned.

"What?""

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"He said he'd tell you everything. He had photographs, messages, and the original paperwork. He said if I didn't pay him, he'd destroy my marriage.""

Daniel stared at her.

"And you paid him with my mother's savings?""

"No!""

"Then where did the money come from?""

Vanessa said nothing.

Evelyn quietly opened the leather folder again.

"There is one more thing.""

She removed a folded envelope.

"Your father gave me this shortly before he died. He said I should only open it if Vanessa ever tried to take the trust.""

Daniel unfolded the letter.

His father's handwriting covered both sides.

The final paragraph read:

Daniel, if the truth about Lily ever comes out, don't assume the story ends with Vanessa. Andrew is not the only person hiding something. I discovered that Lily's birth records contain a second identity, and the person who arranged it is someone you know.

Daniel read the paragraph twice.

Then he noticed a name written beneath the signature.

*Chloe Carter.*

Vanessa's younger sister.

Daniel slowly looked toward the empty hallway.

"Where's Chloe?""

Patricia's face went white.

"She's not involved.""

Daniel raised the letter.

"Then why did my father write her name?""

Before Patricia could answer, the front door opened.

Chloe walked in carrying a shopping bag.

She saw the documents scattered across the table.

Then she saw Daniel holding the letter.

Her bag slipped from her hand.

"Oh, God," she whispered.

Daniel stepped toward her.

"Chloe, what did you do?""

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at Patricia.

And finally, she said something nobody in the room expected.

"I didn't arrange Lily's identity.""

May you like

Her voice broke.

"I gave birth to her.""
