Chapter 8: The Sister's Confession

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at Chloe.

Vanessa looked as though someone had struck her.

Patricia dropped into the nearest chair.

"What did you just say?"" Daniel asked.

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

"I gave birth to Lily.""

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"That's a lie.""

Chloe looked at her older sister.

"No, Vanessa. You know it's true.""

Daniel glanced between them.

"Then whose baby was Lily?""

Chloe covered her mouth.

"Mine.""

For several seconds, the only sound in the living room was the ticking of the grandfather clock.

Daniel slowly sat down.

"Start from the beginning.""

Chloe placed her shopping bag on the floor.

She looked barely thirty, but her face suddenly seemed much older.

"Fourteen years ago, I was eighteen. I was dating Andrew. He was older, and I thought I was in love with him.""

Daniel looked toward the photograph.

The man who had been meeting Vanessa outside the hospital.

"Andrew was your boyfriend?""

Chloe nodded.

"When I became pregnant, he told me he would take responsibility. But Patricia found out and threatened to throw me out of the house.""

Patricia stood.

"That's not what happened.""

Chloe turned.

"You told me I had ruined this family!""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"You told me nobody could know.""

Patricia's face tightened.

"Your father had just died. We were struggling financially. The family couldn't survive another scandal.""

Chloe laughed bitterly.

"So you gave my baby to my sister?""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"I raised her for six months!""

Chloe looked at her.

"You visited her twice.""

"I was dealing with my marriage.""

"You told everyone she died!""

Vanessa's expression crumpled.

"I didn't know what else to do.""

Chloe wiped her cheeks.

"Andrew arranged everything. He told me Lily would go to a good family. Then Patricia said Vanessa would pretend the baby was hers.""

Daniel felt sick.

"Why?""

Chloe looked at him.

"Because Vanessa had told you she was trying to get pregnant. She thought having a baby would make your marriage stronger.""

Daniel stared.

He remembered those years.

Vanessa had cried after every negative pregnancy test.

He had taken her to specialists, paid for treatments, and held her hand through the disappointment.

He had believed they were building a family together.

"Did you know about the arrangement?"" he asked Patricia.

Patricia nodded reluctantly.

"I agreed to it.""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"And you let me believe Lily was yours?""

Vanessa began sobbing.

"I thought I could make it work.""

"Make what work?""

"Our family!""

Daniel shook his head.

"You let me grieve a child who was never mine to lose.""

Vanessa looked up.

"Daniel, please. I loved you.""

He laughed without humor.

"Love doesn't require this many lies.""

Chloe reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"I have something else.""

She placed it on the table.

Inside were photographs of a little girl with dark curly hair.

She was perhaps eleven years old, smiling beside a bicycle.

Daniel picked one up.

"Is this Lily?""

Chloe nodded.

"She's alive. She's been living with Andrew's aunt in Oregon.""

Daniel stared at the photograph.

"Does she know about you?""

"Yes. She knows I'm her birth mother.""

"Does she know about Vanessa?""

Chloe looked down.

"She thinks Vanessa was her aunt.""

Daniel glanced at his wife.

Vanessa had spent years pretending a child had died.

And Chloe had spent those same years watching her daughter grow up from a distance.

"Why did my father get involved?"" Daniel asked.

Chloe took a breath.

"Because Andrew contacted him after the guardianship papers were submitted. He said Lily needed financial support, and your father discovered that the documents were fraudulent.""

"Did my father help Lily?""

Chloe nodded.

"He secretly arranged for her school expenses to be paid. He visited her twice before he became ill.""

Daniel's eyes widened.

"My father met her?""

"Yes.""

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"He never told me.""

Chloe looked at her.

"He wanted to protect you.""

Daniel turned toward the photographs again.

There was one showing Lily standing beside an elderly man.

His father.

Daniel felt tears sting his eyes.

The last time he had seen his father alive, the old man had told him to take care of Evelyn and never let money destroy the family.

Now Daniel understood that his father had been trying to protect a little girl none of them knew existed.

"Why did Vanessa want the trust?"" he asked.

Chloe hesitated.

"Because Andrew told her Lily could become financially secure if she was named a beneficiary.""

Daniel frowned.

"But why involve my mother's savings?""

Patricia answered.

"Because Andrew wanted money immediately. He threatened to expose the arrangement unless we paid him.""

"How much?""

"Three hundred thousand dollars.""

"And Vanessa transferred the money?""

Patricia nodded.

Daniel looked at his wife.

"From my mother's account?""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"I borrowed it.""

"You stole it.""

"I was going to put it back.""

"When?""

She wiped her face.

"After the trust was released.""

Daniel stood.

"So the plan was to steal my mother's money, forge my signature, transfer my house, and access my father's trust?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not like that.""

"Then how?""

She looked at Patricia.

Patricia lowered her eyes.

Daniel suddenly understood.

The messages weren't simply about managing money.

They were about controlling the entire estate.

"Who else knew?""

Chloe slowly raised her hand.

"I found out three weeks ago.""

Daniel turned.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Patricia threatened to tell Andrew where Lily was living. She said if I opened my mouth, she'd make sure I never saw my daughter again.""

Evelyn stood.

"That is enough.""

Patricia looked at her.

"Excuse me?""

Evelyn's voice trembled, but she continued.

"You have spent years making people afraid. You made Vanessa afraid of losing her marriage. You made Chloe afraid of losing her daughter. And you made me afraid to eat dinner in my own home.""

Patricia scoffed.

"Don't pretend you're innocent in all this. You signed those documents.""

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes. I did. Because I trusted you.""

Then she looked at Daniel.

"And I should have told you sooner.""

Daniel took her hand.

"Mom, you were manipulated.""

"But I still signed.""

Her eyes filled.

"I've spent fourteen years carrying that secret. Every time I looked at Vanessa, I remembered that little baby. I wondered whether she was warm, whether she was eating, whether someone was holding her when she cried.""

Chloe began sobbing.

Evelyn reached for her hand.

"I didn't know you were her mother, sweetheart. I'm so sorry.""

Chloe collapsed into the chair and covered her face.

For a moment, the room felt less like a confrontation and more like a family finally discovering how deeply it had been wounded.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

It was Richard.

"Daniel, I need you to come to the office immediately.""

"What happened?""

"The bank has identified the destination of the missing funds.""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"Where?""

Richard lowered his voice.

"An account belonging to Patricia's company.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"How much?""

"One hundred and forty-six thousand from your mother's savings, plus several transfers from a separate account.""

"Whose account?""

"Your father's trust.""

Daniel felt his knees weaken.

"How much from the trust?""

Richard paused.

"Approximately $320,000.""

Patricia stood abruptly.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel looked at her.

"How would you know?""

She didn't answer.

Richard continued.

"There's another problem. The bank received a new request this morning to release the remaining trust funds.""

Daniel looked at the clock.

It was 2:15 p.m.

"Who submitted it?""

Richard's answer came quietly.

"Your wife.""

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

She was already backing away.

"I can explain.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Don't.""

Then Richard added:

"Daniel, the request includes a signed statement from your mother confirming that she voluntarily surrendered all rights to the estate.""

Evelyn gasped.

"I never signed anything!""

Daniel looked at the document Richard had just emailed.

At the bottom was Evelyn's name.

But this time, the signature wasn't simply suspicious.

It was accompanied by a statement declaring that she had voluntarily left Daniel's home and transferred her remaining assets to Vanessa.

May you like

And beneath that statement was a date.

Tomorrow.
