Chapter 5: The File My Father Left Behind

Richard Hayes's office smelled of old books, polished wood, and expensive coffee.

Daniel arrived at 11:40 a.m. with Ethan beside him.

He had wanted to leave his son at home, but Ethan had refused.

"Grandma gave me that letter because she trusted me," the boy had said.

"I want to know what's happening.""

Daniel couldn't argue with that.

Richard stood as they entered.

"Daniel.""

He shook Daniel's hand, then looked at Ethan.

"You must be Ethan.""

"Yes, sir.""

Richard offered him a chair.

"I knew your grandfather very well. He spoke about you constantly.""

Ethan gave a small smile.

"Really?""

"Every time he visited this office, he showed me photographs.""

Daniel sat opposite the attorney.

"Tell me about Margaret Collins.""

Richard opened a locked cabinet and removed a thick folder.

"Your father hired her about eight months before he died. He suspected that certain financial documents were being altered.""

"By whom?""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"Your wife.""

Daniel felt his jaw tighten.

Richard continued.

"At first, your father believed it was a misunderstanding. Vanessa had been asking questions about the estate, the investment accounts, and the ownership structure of this property.""

"She said she was helping manage things.""

"Your father didn't believe her intentions were entirely innocent.""

Richard placed several documents on the desk.

One was a printed email.

Another was a bank statement.

The third was a photograph of Vanessa meeting Patricia outside a downtown office building.

Daniel stared at it.

"When was this taken?""

"Three months before your father's death.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Your father specifically asked me to wait until there was evidence of wrongdoing.""

Richard opened another folder.

"Unfortunately, he died before the investigation was completed.""

Daniel looked down at the documents.

"What exactly did Margaret discover?""

Richard hesitated.

"Your wife had been discussing ways to gain control of the estate without triggering the safeguards in your father's trust.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"How?""

"By obtaining signatures from both you and your mother.""

Daniel remembered the property transfer document on Ethan's tablet.

"And if she got them?""

"She would have been able to request changes to several financial arrangements.""

"Would she have received the money?""

"Potentially, yes. But your father anticipated that possibility.""

Richard opened the trust document.

"Your father created a protective clause. If anyone attempted to obtain the funds through fraudulent signatures or coercion, the money would be redirected to Ethan.""

Daniel looked at his son.

"That's why you named him as the emergency beneficiary?""

Richard nodded.

"Your father wanted to ensure that his grandson would have financial protection regardless of what happened between you and Vanessa.""

Ethan looked confused.

"Grandpa left me money?""

Richard smiled sadly.

"He left you something much more important than money, Ethan. He left instructions to protect your future.""

Daniel stared at the documents.

"Did Vanessa know about this clause?""

Richard nodded.

"Your father suspected she did.""

A knock interrupted them.

Richard's assistant opened the door.

"Mr. Hayes, Margaret Collins is here.""

Daniel turned.

A woman in her early sixties entered carrying a leather briefcase.

She had short gray hair, sharp eyes, and a serious expression.

"Daniel Carter?""

"Yes.""

She shook his hand.

"I'm Margaret. Your father asked me to keep this file until you were ready to see it.""

Daniel looked at the briefcase.

"What's inside?""

Margaret placed it on the desk.

"Evidence.""

She opened the locks.

Inside were photographs, printed emails, transaction records, and audio recordings.

Daniel picked up the first photograph.

Vanessa was sitting at a restaurant table with Patricia.

A man in a dark suit sat opposite them.

Margaret pointed to him.

"His name is Gregory Shaw. He was a financial consultant who had previously been investigated for fraudulent investment schemes.""

Daniel studied the photograph.

"What was Vanessa doing with him?""

"Discussing your father's assets.""

Margaret removed another document.

"This is an email exchange between Vanessa and Mr. Shaw.""

Daniel read the first message.

*Vanessa: My husband won't sign anything unless he believes it's necessary.*

*Gregory: Then make the documents part of a routine household restructuring.*

*Vanessa: And Evelyn?*

*Gregory: Get her signature first. She's the easiest person to persuade.*

Daniel felt sick.

Margaret placed a second page beside it.

*Vanessa: She's becoming suspicious.*

*Gregory: Then reduce her access to information. People who feel dependent rarely challenge the person helping them.*

Daniel looked up.

"That's exactly what she did.""

Margaret nodded.

"Your father recognized the pattern.""

She removed a small digital recorder.

"He also left an audio recording.""

Richard connected it to the office speakers.

A familiar voice filled the room.

Daniel's father.

"If Daniel ever hears this, I want him to understand something. I didn't investigate Vanessa because I disliked her. I investigated her because I found financial records that didn't make sense.""

There was a pause.

Then his father continued.

"She has been using family money to support her mother's business. I found payments that were never approved, documents with signatures that don't belong to their owners, and evidence that someone is preparing to transfer property.""

Daniel stared at the recorder.

His father's voice sounded weaker than he remembered.

"Daniel, I know you love your wife. I also know you love your mother. Don't let anyone convince you that protecting one means sacrificing the other.""

The recording ended.

Ethan wiped his eyes.

"I miss Grandpa.""

Daniel put an arm around him.

"Me too, buddy.""

Margaret closed the briefcase halfway.

"There's another part of the investigation.""

Daniel looked up.

"What?""

"Your father believed Vanessa and Patricia were working together because Patricia had accumulated significant debts.""

"How much?""

"More than $400,000.""

Daniel stared.

Margaret continued.

"Patricia's catering company was failing. Several creditors were preparing legal action. Your wife had been moving money into accounts associated with that business.""

Daniel remembered the messages.

Once the property is transferred, we can settle the remaining debts.

"She was planning to use my house?""

Margaret nodded.

"Your father believed that was the ultimate objective.""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"There's one more issue. The trust cannot be fully activated until we establish whether the attempted transfers were fraudulent.""

"How long will that take?""

"That depends on the evidence.""

Margaret opened the briefcase again.

"Which brings me to something your father asked me to find.""

She removed a photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a hospital with a man Daniel had never seen.

The date was printed in the corner.

Six months before Daniel's father died.

"Who is that?"" Daniel asked.

Margaret watched his reaction.

"His name is Andrew Miller.""

"Why was my wife meeting him?""

Margaret placed another photograph on the desk.

This time, Vanessa was holding a newborn baby.

Daniel felt the room grow strangely quiet.

He looked closer.

The photograph had been taken four years earlier.

"That's not Ethan," he whispered.

"No," Margaret replied.

"Whose child is that?""

Margaret folded her hands.

"That's what your father wanted you to find out.""

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

Then he noticed something written on the back.

Vanessa's first child. Birth certificate registered under a different surname.

He looked at Richard.

"Does this have something to do with the trust?""

Richard's expression changed.

"Possibly.""

Margaret reached into her briefcase and removed a final envelope.

"Your father believed the child might be connected to the financial arrangements.""

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a copy of a birth certificate.

The mother's name was Vanessa Carter.

The father's name was blank.

But the date of birth was impossible to ignore.

The child had been born just fourteen months after Daniel and Vanessa's wedding.

And the address listed as the child's residence was not a hospital or relative's home.

It was Patricia's house.

Daniel looked up.

"Why didn't Vanessa tell me she had another child?""

May you like

Margaret answered quietly.

"Because she told everyone the baby had died.""
