Chapter 9: The Hearing That Exposed Everyone
The courthouse was packed the following morning.
Patricia arrived wearing a cream-colored suit and carrying a leather handbag.
She walked through the entrance as though she were attending a business meeting.
Richard Hale followed her.
He was in his late sixties, with silver hair and a polished black briefcase.
When he saw me, he offered a small smile.
"Daniel. It's been a while.""
I didn't return it.
"Not long enough.""
He adjusted his tie.
"Let's hope we can resolve this without unnecessary drama.""
Emily stepped beside me.
Richard's smile vanished.
For the first time, I saw him lose control of his expression.
"Emily.""
"Richard.""
He looked toward Patricia.
She had gone pale.
I watched her whisper something to him.
He shook his head.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
A clerk called everyone inside.
The judge, Margaret Collins, entered and took her seat.
"This hearing concerns the emergency petition for temporary control of the Carter Family Education and Property Trust. I expect all parties to remain respectful and provide truthful testimony.""
Patricia sat beside Richard.
Vanessa sat behind me.
Emily sat beside Detective Brooks.
I placed my father's blue box on the table.
Richard immediately noticed it.
His eyes stayed on the box for several seconds.
Then he leaned toward Patricia.
She looked at him.
Whatever he whispered made her hands tighten around her handbag.
The judge began.
"Mr. Hale, you may proceed.""
Richard stood.
"Your Honor, my client is requesting temporary authority over the trust because the current family circumstances create a substantial risk to the beneficiary's financial interests.""
He placed several documents before the judge.
"Mr. Daniel Carter has demonstrated poor financial oversight. His household savings have been depleted, and his wife has acknowledged signing documents related to the estate.""
I almost laughed.
He was using Vanessa's mistakes to justify giving Patricia control of Nia's inheritance.
Richard continued.
"My client believes the trust should be managed by a responsible family representative until these matters are resolved.""
The judge looked at Patricia.
"Mrs. Collins, why do you believe you are the appropriate person?""
Patricia stood.
"Because I have always cared about Nia. I have watched her grow up. I want to protect her future.""
I stared at her.
The woman who had denied my daughter dinner was now telling a judge she wanted to protect her.
Patricia continued.
"I believe Daniel has allowed personal resentment to interfere with his judgment. He has also encouraged his wife to make accusations against me.""
The judge raised an eyebrow.
"Are you alleging the current trustee has mismanaged the assets?""
"Yes, Your Honor.""
Melissa stood.
"We object to that characterization. The trust has remained under independent management, and there is no evidence of mismanagement.""
Richard lifted a document.
"Then perhaps the court should examine the beneficiary's own family circumstances.""
He handed the paper to the clerk.
The judge read it.
"Mrs. Carter, is this your signature?""
Vanessa stood slowly.
"No, Your Honor.""
Richard frowned.
"Are you certain?""
"Absolutely.""
"Yet this document was submitted with your name.""
"Someone forged it.""
Richard adjusted his glasses.
"Are you suggesting my office submitted a fraudulent document?""
Vanessa looked directly at him.
"I'm saying I never signed it.""
Patricia leaned toward Richard and whispered urgently.
The judge noticed.
"Mrs. Collins, please remain silent unless addressed.""
Richard cleared his throat.
"Your Honor, the witness is clearly under emotional pressure.""
Melissa stood.
"We request permission to submit evidence demonstrating that the document was digitally altered.""
The judge nodded.
Melissa handed over a forensic report.
It showed that the signature had been copied from an unrelated financial authorization and inserted into the petition.
The judge studied the report.
"Mr. Hale, did your office verify this signature?""
Richard hesitated.
"My staff received the document from my client.""
"That wasn't my question.""
He swallowed.
"No, Your Honor.""
Patricia turned toward him.
Her expression was furious.
The judge placed the document down.
"Proceed with the next witness.""
Detective Brooks took the stand.
He explained the investigation into the Collins property transactions.
He presented records showing that multiple properties had been transferred through companies controlled by Patricia.
Then he showed the court copies of Emily's forged signatures.
"These signatures appear on loan applications submitted while Ms. Carter was missing or presumed dead," he explained.
The judge looked at Patricia.
"Mrs. Collins, did you submit these applications?""
Patricia shook her head.
"No.""
"Do you know who did?""
"My former husband.""
Richard immediately stood.
"Objection. This is outside the scope of the trust petition.""
The judge looked at him.
"Overruled. The petitioner has introduced questions about financial responsibility. The court will examine the evidence relevant to those claims.""
Detective Brooks continued.
He explained that Thomas Collins had been located and was cooperating with investigators.
Then he presented a recorded statement.
Thomas appeared on the courtroom screen.
He looked older, thinner, and exhausted.
But his voice was clear.
"My wife asked me to use Emily's information for the property loans. She told me the documents were legitimate.""
Patricia shook her head.
Thomas continued.
"When Emily discovered what was happening, she threatened to report us. Patricia became furious.""
Richard stood.
"Objection!""
The judge raised her hand.
"Sit down, Mr. Hale.""
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
"On the night of the accident, Patricia asked me to follow Emily's car. She said she wanted to frighten her into keeping quiet.""
The courtroom fell silent.
"I followed her onto the country road. I saw Patricia's vehicle behind her. Then Emily's car went off the road.""
Patricia stood abruptly.
"He's lying!""
The judge struck her gavel.
"Mrs. Collins, sit down!""
Thomas continued.
"I helped Emily get out of the vehicle. She was badly injured. I took her to a private clinic because Patricia had told me she would make sure Emily never spoke again.""
My hands tightened.
"Why didn't you go to the police?"" the judge asked.
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"Because I was involved in the fraud. I thought I'd be arrested too.""
The judge nodded slowly.
"And where is the original evidence?""
Thomas looked toward the camera.
"With Emily.""
Emily stood.
"Your Honor, may I speak?""
The judge nodded.
Emily walked to the witness stand.
I watched my sister place her hand on the Bible.
She told the court about the fraudulent loans, the confrontation, the crash, and the months she spent recovering.
She explained how Thomas helped her disappear because he feared Patricia would come after both of them.
Then she looked toward Patricia.
"You didn't just steal my identity. You tried to erase me.""
Patricia's face twisted.
"You abandoned this family!""
Emily shook her head.
"You tried to kill me.""
"I never touched you!""
Detective Brooks stood.
"Mrs. Collins, we have a statement from the driver who saw your vehicle following Emily's car that night. We also have financial records linking you to the fraudulent transactions.""
Patricia turned toward Richard.
He was no longer looking at her.
He was staring at the table.
Melissa stood.
"Your Honor, we have one final piece of evidence.""
She opened the blue box.
Inside was a sealed document from my father.
The judge examined it.
"This appears to be an original trust amendment.""
Melissa nodded.
"It was recovered from the personal effects of the original settlor, Robert Carter.""
The judge read the document carefully.
Then she looked up.
"Mr. Hale, were you aware of this amendment?""
Richard stood slowly.
"I was not aware that this particular copy existed.""
Emily laughed bitterly.
"That's because you helped Patricia hide it.""
Richard turned toward her.
"Be careful what you say.""
Detective Brooks immediately stood.
"Mr. Hale, we have records showing that you received payments from accounts connected to Northstar Development Group.""
Richard's face changed.
Patricia looked at him.
"What?""
He didn't answer.
Detective Brooks continued.
"We also have correspondence showing that you advised Patricia on how to transfer ownership interests without triggering an immediate review.""
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
Richard closed his briefcase.
"Your Honor, I request a recess.""
The judge stared at him.
"Denied.""
Then she turned to Patricia.
"Mrs. Collins, I am denying your request for temporary control of the trust. The trust will remain under independent management, and the beneficiary's interests will be protected pending further investigation.""
Patricia stood.
"You can't do that!""
"I just did.""
The judge continued.
"Additionally, the court is referring the submitted documents and related financial records for criminal investigation.""
Patricia looked toward Vanessa.
Then toward me.
Her expression changed from anger to something much colder.
She leaned forward.
"You think you've won?""
I didn't answer.
She smiled.
"Ask your wife what she did with the original papers.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
Her face had gone completely white.
"Vanessa?""
She stood slowly.
"I don't know what she's talking about.""
Patricia laughed.
"Tell him where you hid Emily's original inheritance certificate.""
Vanessa began shaking.
Then she whispered:
"I burned it.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
She started crying.
"I burned it because Patricia told me it was the only way to keep you from finding out.""
Emily closed her eyes.
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
"Mrs. Carter, when did this happen?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Three months ago.""
"Where?""
"At my mother's house.""
The detective exchanged a glance with Melissa.
Then he asked the question that made everyone turn toward Vanessa.
"Mrs. Carter, are you aware that the document you destroyed was not the only original copy?""
Vanessa shook her head.
He opened another folder.
"We recovered a second copy yesterday from the estate attorney's office.""
Richard's face went completely blank.
The detective placed it on the table.
And there, beneath my father's signature, was a paragraph none of us had noticed before.
It named the person who would inherit control of Carter Holdings if Nia's trust was ever threatened.
I leaned closer.
The name wasn't mine.
It wasn't Emily's.
It wasn't Vanessa's.
It was someone Patricia had spent years pretending didn't exist.
*Ruth Carter.*
My mother.
The judge ordered the document preserved as evidence.
But before anyone could leave, Detective Brooks received a message.
He read it.
Then looked directly at me.
"Mr. Carter, your mother has just been reported missing.""
My blood ran cold.
And when he showed me the last message sent from her phone, I realized Patricia hadn't been trying to win the trust case.
She had been trying to silence the one person who could finally explain everything.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence:
*If Daniel finds out who really owns Carter Holdings, none of us will be safe.*
