Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Forgery
At nine the next morning, I was sitting in Melissa Grant's office with the blue box on my lap.
Vanessa sat beside me.
She hadn't slept.
Neither had I.
Melissa was in her early forties, with short brown hair and a calm expression that made it difficult to tell what she was thinking.
She placed several documents on the table.
"Mr. Carter, before we discuss your sister, we need to address the emergency petition.""
I looked at the papers.
"Patricia wants control of Nia's trust.""
"More specifically, she wants to be appointed temporary representative of the beneficiary's interests.""
"Why would a court even consider that?""
"Because she submitted documents claiming you and Vanessa are financially unstable and that Nia's inheritance is at risk.""
I laughed bitterly.
"She stole nearly thirty thousand dollars from our savings, and now she's claiming we're irresponsible?""
Melissa adjusted her glasses.
"She also submitted an affidavit claiming Vanessa authorized the original transfer of Emily's interest.""
Vanessa went pale.
"That's a lie.""
Melissa looked at her.
"Then I need you to explain the signature.""
Vanessa stared at the table.
"I signed it.""
I turned toward her.
She closed her eyes.
"I signed Emily's name.""
Melissa didn't react.
"Did you do so voluntarily?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Patricia told me Emily had given her permission. She said the paperwork was just an administrative formality.""
"Did you know Emily was alive?""
"No.""
"Did you know the document transferred property interests?""
"I thought it was temporary.""
Melissa made a note.
"Did Patricia give you anything in return?""
Vanessa looked at me.
Then she whispered, "She promised to pay off my personal debt.""
I turned.
"What personal debt?""
Vanessa began crying.
"Before we married, I had a credit card problem. I owed nearly twelve thousand dollars. Patricia knew about it.""
I stared at her.
"You told me you had paid that off.""
"I thought I had.""
Melissa leaned forward.
"Mrs. Carter, did Patricia use your debt to pressure you into signing the documents?""
Vanessa nodded.
"She told me she would send the statements to Daniel if I refused.""
I stood up.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Vanessa looked at me through her tears.
"Because I was ashamed.""
I paced toward the window.
For years, I had believed our marriage was built on honesty.
Now every answer seemed to uncover another lie.
Melissa interrupted gently.
"Mr. Carter, I understand this is difficult, but we need to establish the facts before the hearing.""
I turned.
"What hearing?""
"Tomorrow morning. Patricia has requested emergency consideration of her petition.""
"Can she get control of the trust?""
"Not if we can establish the fraud and demonstrate that Nia's interests are being protected.""
I placed the blue box on the desk.
"Then use everything inside.""
Melissa opened the compartment and examined the flash drive.
Her expression changed.
"Where did you get this?""
"My father hid it.""
She looked at the photograph of Emily and Thomas.
Then she opened the folder containing the bank records.
"These are important.""
"Can they prove Patricia forged the documents?""
"They may. But we need the original trust records and a statement from Emily.""
A knock sounded at the office door.
Melissa stood.
"That's probably the investigator.""
She opened it.
A tall man in a dark jacket stepped inside.
"Good morning. I'm Detective Samuel Brooks.""
He introduced himself and shook my hand.
"We've been reviewing the Collins investigation for several months.""
I looked at him.
"Why wasn't I contacted?""
"Because we didn't know you were connected to the current trust dispute until yesterday.""
He placed a folder on the desk.
"Mr. Carter, your father provided information to our department before he died. Unfortunately, some of the original evidence disappeared after his passing.""
I frowned.
"Who took it?""
"We believe Patricia had access to the house.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She lowered her head.
Detective Brooks opened the folder.
"There's something else. Thomas Collins has been cooperating with investigators. He claims Patricia used Emily's identity to secure fraudulent loans and later attempted to have her killed when she threatened to expose the operation.""
I swallowed.
"Did he arrange the accident?""
"He's provided evidence suggesting he helped Emily escape after the crash. But we haven't established who caused it.""
"Where is Emily now?""
"She's on her way here.""
My heart started racing.
A few minutes later, the office door opened again.
A woman walked inside.
She wore a gray coat and carried a small leather bag.
Her hair was shorter than I remembered.
There were faint lines around her eyes.
But the moment she looked at me, I knew.
"Hey, Danny.""
I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.
"Emily.""
She smiled through tears.
I crossed the room.
For seventeen years, I had imagined what I would say if I ever saw my sister again.
I had imagined anger.
Questions.
Accusations.
Instead, I wrapped my arms around her.
She held me tightly.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
I pressed my face against her shoulder.
"You're alive.""
"Yes.""
I pulled back.
"You're really alive.""
She nodded.
Then she touched my cheek.
"You got old.""
I laughed through my tears.
"So did you.""
For a moment, we were children again.
Then I remembered everything.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Emily looked toward Vanessa.
Her smile disappeared.
"Because I didn't know who I could trust.""
Vanessa stood.
"Emily, I'm sorry.""
Emily looked at her for a long time.
"You were there that night.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I know.""
"You drove Patricia away from my apartment.""
"I didn't know what she had done.""
Emily's expression hardened.
"But you knew I was in danger.""
Vanessa began crying.
"I was scared.""
"So was I.""
The room went silent.
Emily sat down.
She opened her bag and removed a thick folder.
"Daniel, this is what Patricia has been hiding.""
She placed the folder on the desk.
Inside were copies of property deeds, bank transfers, and a series of company ownership records.
One document showed my father's original business.
Another showed the trust ownership.
Then Emily pointed to a page with several signatures.
"Patricia transferred properties worth millions through shell companies. She used our father's old company records to make the transactions appear legitimate.""
I looked at the dates.
Some transfers had happened after Dad died.
Others had happened while he was still alive.
"Did Dad know?""
"He discovered the first fraud. That's why he changed the trust.""
"Why did he put Nia's name on it?""
Emily smiled sadly.
"Because he wanted to protect the next generation. He knew Patricia would eventually come after whatever remained.""
I looked at the papers.
Then something caught my attention.
A company name.
*Northstar Development Group.*
I recognized it.
It was the company Patricia had mentioned when Vanessa transferred our money.
I pointed to the document.
"That's where the twenty-eight thousand dollars went.""
Emily nodded.
"Patricia has been using relatives to fund the operation.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
She looked devastated.
"I didn't know.""
Emily didn't answer.
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
"There's enough here to reopen the investigation into the accident and examine the fraudulent transfers.""
I looked at him.
"What about Patricia's petition?""
Melissa checked her computer.
"There's a problem.""
"What?""
"Patricia has submitted another document.""
She turned the screen toward us.
It was a signed statement claiming that Emily had voluntarily abandoned her inheritance and that the trust should be transferred to Patricia.
At the bottom was a witness signature.
I recognized it immediately.
My wife.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
"No.""
Melissa enlarged the document.
The signature was dated six months earlier.
Vanessa shook her head.
"I never signed that.""
Detective Brooks examined it.
"Are you certain?""
"Yes.""
Emily leaned closer.
Then she pointed to the signature.
"That's not Vanessa's handwriting.""
I looked at the document again.
The signature had been copied from another page.
Someone had forged it.
But who?
Melissa opened the filing information.
The document had been submitted through an online account registered to a law office.
The attorney's name appeared beneath the submission details.
I recognized it.
It was the attorney who had handled my father's estate.
The man who had attended his funeral.
The man who had shaken my hand and promised to protect our family.
I looked at Melissa.
"Who is this?""
She swallowed.
"Mr. Carter, the filing was submitted by Richard Hale.""
Emily slowly closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
"Patricia's lawyer.""
I stared at the screen.
"Wasn't he Dad's lawyer?""
Emily nodded.
"He was more than that.""
May you like
She leaned forward.
"He was the person who helped Patricia get into the house the night I disappeared.""
