The Dinner Table Secret / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Money Behind the Lies

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood her.

She didn't know I had taken it?

That was what Vanessa had just said.

I looked at the document again.

The amount was printed in bold.

*$18,500.*

It was a transfer from the family savings account to an account belonging to Patricia.

The transaction had happened six weeks earlier.

I had discovered it that afternoon when my bank contacted me about an unusual withdrawal.

At first, I assumed it was a mistake.

Then I saw Vanessa's authorization.

"Explain that sentence," I said.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Daniel, please. Not tonight.""

"Not tonight?""

I pointed toward Nia's plate.

"Our daughter just sat here watching you eat a feast while she was given rice. And now you're asking me to postpone a conversation about eighteen thousand five hundred dollars?""

Patricia's name seemed to burn through the paper.

Vanessa sat down.

"That money was supposed to be temporary.""

"Temporary?""

"I was going to replace it.""

"With what?""

She didn't answer.

Malik leaned forward.

"Is that why you made Dad stop paying for Nia's dance classes?""

Vanessa spun toward him.

"Stay out of this.""

"No," Malik replied.

"You told her there wasn't enough money.""

I looked at my son.

"When did that happen?""

"Two months ago.""

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

"Daniel, you're hearing one side of the story.""

"Then give me yours.""

She glanced toward Nia.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Daniel, she's ten.""

"Exactly. She's ten. She's old enough to know when she's being treated differently, but apparently not old enough for you to explain why.""

Vanessa stood.

"You're humiliating me.""

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because she had managed to turn a conversation about our daughter's hunger into a discussion about her embarrassment.

I walked to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.

There were containers of leftovers, a half-empty bottle of orange juice, and several expensive desserts.

I took out a plate.

Then I returned to the table and placed two lobster tails, shrimp, corn, and potatoes on it.

"Nia, sweetheart, come eat.""

She glanced at Vanessa.

I gently turned her chair toward me.

"You don't need permission to eat dinner in your own home.""

Nia picked up a shrimp.

"Thank you, Daddy.""

Vanessa watched in silence.

I sat beside my daughter while she ate.

Malik finally relaxed enough to take a few bites of his food.

For several minutes, the only sounds were forks against plates and the faint hum of the refrigerator.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"Patricia was in trouble.""

I didn't look up.

"What kind of trouble?""

"She had debts.""

"How much?""

"I don't know.""

"You transferred eighteen thousand five hundred dollars to her account without telling me, and you don't know how much she needed?""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"She was desperate.""

"So was our family when I was working double shifts to build that savings account.""

"You're acting like I stole from strangers.""

I put down my fork.

"You took money from our children's future without asking me.""

She shook her head.

"You're always making everything about money.""

"No. I'm making this about trust.""

Vanessa looked away.

I remembered the first few years of our marriage.

Back then, we had almost nothing.

We lived in a small apartment above a laundromat. The heating barely worked, and we sometimes ate canned soup for dinner.

Vanessa used to sit beside me at the kitchen counter, helping me calculate our bills.

She would kiss my forehead and say, "One day, Daniel, our children will never have to worry about money.""

I believed her.

I had built my life around that promise.

Now, apparently, my daughter couldn't even have a crab leg.

"Why did Patricia need the money?"" I asked again.

Vanessa hesitated.

"Her husband had left her.""

"That's unfortunate.""

"She had rent to pay. School expenses for the children. Credit cards.""

"So you decided to use our savings?""

"I was helping family.""

I leaned back.

"Then why did you hide it?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Malik suddenly spoke.

"Because Grandma told her not to.""

Vanessa's head snapped around.

"What?""

Malik looked uncomfortable, but he continued.

"I heard you on the phone last week.""

"Malik, stop.""

"You were in the laundry room. You said Dad couldn't know about the money because he'd ask questions.""

Vanessa stood so quickly her chair scraped the floor.

"You were listening to my private conversation?""

"I was getting my school uniform!""

"You're twisting what you heard.""

Malik shook his head.

"No, Mom. I heard you say Grandma had already agreed to cover for you.""

My stomach tightened.

"Your mother knew?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

"Don't bring my mother into this.""

"She was involved in our money?""

"She was trying to help.""

"How?""

Vanessa picked up her phone.

"I'm calling her.""

"Put it down.""

She ignored me and dialed.

The call connected after two rings.

"Mom, Daniel is making a scene. You need to come over.""

I watched her expression.

She was no longer crying.

She sounded irritated, almost rehearsed.

A familiar voice came through the speaker.

"What happened now?""

"He's looking at the transfer.""

There was a pause.

Then her mother, Eleanor, said something I could hear clearly.

"Did he find the original account?""

Vanessa froze.

I stared at her.

"Original account?""

Eleanor continued.

"Vanessa, I told you to move the money before he noticed the other withdrawals.""

The room became painfully quiet.

Vanessa hurried to lower the phone.

"Mom, stop talking.""

But it was too late.

I reached across the table.

"Put her on speaker.""

"No.""

"Vanessa.""

She ended the call.

I slowly stood.

"How many withdrawals?""

Her eyes filled again.

"I can explain.""

"How many?""

She looked at the floor.

"Three.""

My hands went cold.

I pulled out my phone and opened the banking app.

There were two more transfers.

One for $6,000.

Another for $4,200.

Together, the missing money totaled $28,700.

I turned the screen toward her.

"Where did this money go?""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Malik stood.

"That's why Mom told Nia she couldn't have anything?""

Vanessa glared at him.

"Go upstairs.""

"No.""

"Malik, I am your mother!""

"And Nia is your daughter!""

His voice cracked.

He looked at me.

"Dad, there's something else.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"What?""

Malik glanced at Nia.

She had stopped eating.

Her small hand was wrapped around a piece of corn, but she wasn't looking at it anymore.

"Last month, I saw Grandma put some papers in Nia's backpack.""

Vanessa went completely still.

"What papers?""

Malik swallowed.

"I don't know. But Grandma told Mom that Nia needed to sign something before her birthday.""

I turned toward my wife.

"Sign what?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That has nothing to do with the money.""

"Then why were papers about our daughter being placed in her backpack?""

She looked at me.

For the first time, I saw something beyond fear in her eyes.

It was calculation.

She was deciding what to admit.

I walked to Nia and crouched beside her.

"Sweetheart, do you remember those papers?""

Nia nodded slowly.

"Grandma said it was for my future.""

"What did she ask you to do?""

"She said I needed to practice my signature.""

My stomach dropped.

"Did you sign anything?""

Nia shook her head.

"No. I couldn't read all the words.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Where are those papers now?""

She didn't answer.

Then Malik reached into his school backpack.

"I kept something.""

He pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

"I found this under Nia's bed after Grandma left.""

He handed it to me.

The document was creased down the middle.

I opened it.

At first, the legal language meant very little.

Then I saw the highlighted section.

*Minor Beneficiary: Nia Daniel Carter.*

And directly beneath it:

*Authorization for Transfer of Beneficial Interest.*

I read it twice.

Then I noticed the signature line.

It was blank.

My daughter had been listed as the beneficiary of something.

And someone was trying to transfer that interest to another person.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Whose name is supposed to go here?""

Her lips parted.

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Daniel Carter?""

"Yes.""

"This is Melissa Grant from Carter & Wells Legal Services. I'm calling regarding the trust established for your daughter.""

I gripped the phone.

"What trust?""

There was a pause.

May you like

Then the woman said something that made my blood run cold.

"Mr. Carter, I believe you need to know that someone has been attempting to remove your daughter as the sole beneficiary.""
