Chapter 7: The Sister Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
I stared at the photograph until the words on the screen became blurry.
Emily.
My sister.
Alive.
The woman standing beside Thomas Collins outside a hospital looked older than the girl I remembered, but there was no mistaking her face. The same dark eyes. The same small scar above her left eyebrow from when she fell off her bicycle at twelve.
I had buried that face seventeen years ago.
I had stood beside my father at her funeral.
I had watched my mother collapse against the coffin.
And now an attorney was telling me she was alive.
"Daniel?""
Vanessa's voice came from behind me.
I turned the laptop toward her.
"Do you recognize this woman?""
Her eyes widened.
She took one step backward.
"Oh my God.""
"You've seen her before?""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"No.""
"Look at me. Have you seen Emily?""
She shook her head, but her eyes remained fixed on the photograph.
"Vanessa.""
"I swear, Daniel. I thought she was dead.""
I pointed toward the screen.
"Then explain why Patricia told you not to discuss this with me.""
Vanessa sank onto the edge of the bed.
"I don't know.""
I picked up my phone and called the attorney.
Melissa Grant answered immediately.
"Mr. Carter, I was hoping you'd call.""
"Where did you get this photograph?""
"It was provided by an investigator working with the trust's original trustee.""
"Is Emily alive?""
There was a pause.
"We have strong evidence that she is.""
I gripped the phone.
"Where is she?""
"Her current location is confidential. She's been cooperating with investigators, but she has requested that we not disclose her address until certain legal matters are resolved.""
"Does she know I'm looking for her?""
"Yes.""
"Why hasn't she contacted me?""
Melissa hesitated.
"That's something I believe she should explain herself.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Does she know Patricia is involved?""
"Yes, Mr. Carter. In fact, Emily's recent statement is what prompted us to review the attempted changes to Nia's trust.""
I lowered my voice.
"What did Emily say?""
"She claims the original accident was staged.""
My knees weakened.
I sat down.
"Staged?""
"She survived the crash. Someone removed her from the vehicle before emergency services arrived. She spent several months recovering under another identity.""
I closed my eyes.
"Who?""
"We're still verifying every detail. However, she identified Thomas Collins as the person who helped her escape.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Thomas.
The man Patricia claimed had abandoned her.
The man my father had spent years searching for.
"Why did Emily disappear?""
"She says she was afraid someone would come after her again.""
"Who?""
"I can't discuss the full statement over the phone.""
I stood.
"Then tell me where to meet you.""
"We can arrange a meeting tomorrow morning.""
"Tomorrow is too late.""
"Mr. Carter, please understand that this investigation involves several people and potentially serious criminal conduct. We need to protect the evidence.""
I looked at the flash drive.
"I have evidence.""
"Then bring it.""
The call ended.
Vanessa was still sitting on the bed.
I looked at her.
"How much did Patricia tell you about Emily?""
"Not much.""
"That's not enough.""
Vanessa wiped her face.
"She told me Emily had disappeared because she was involved in something illegal. She said your father knew, but he refused to accept it.""
"Did you believe her?""
"I wanted to.""
"Why?""
Vanessa looked up.
"Because Patricia showed me a document with your sister's signature. She said Emily had willingly signed over her share of the property business.""
I shook my head.
"Emily never owned that business.""
"That's what I know now.""
I walked toward the bedroom door.
"You're coming with me tomorrow.""
Vanessa stood.
"Daniel, I need to tell you something first.""
I stopped.
"What?""
She looked at the floor.
"Patricia didn't just threaten to expose me. She threatened to expose what happened the night Emily disappeared.""
I turned slowly.
"What happened?""
Vanessa began crying.
"She said I was there.""
I stared at her.
"You were?""
"Yes.""
The room seemed to shrink around us.
"Why?""
"Because I was dating you. Patricia was already my sister, and she knew your family. She asked me to drive her somewhere that night.""
"Where?""
"To Emily's apartment.""
I couldn't breathe.
"You went to my sister's apartment?""
Vanessa nodded.
"What happened?""
"I waited in the car. Patricia went inside. When she came back, she was carrying a folder.""
"Did you see Emily?""
"No.""
"Did you hear anything?""
Vanessa squeezed her eyes shut.
"Someone was shouting.""
"Who?""
"I couldn't tell.""
I stepped closer.
"How long did you wait?""
"About twenty minutes.""
"And then?""
"Patricia told me to drive.""
I stared at my wife.
"You never told the police.""
"Patricia said Emily had already left.""
"And you believed her?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. But I was twenty-two, Daniel. I was scared. She told me she would destroy my life if I spoke.""
I felt sick.
For seventeen years, I had believed my sister died in an accident.
My wife had been at her apartment hours before that accident.
And she had never said a word.
I turned away.
"I need some air.""
I walked downstairs.
My phone vibrated again.
An incoming call.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through.
"Daniel?""
I froze.
I knew that voice.
It was older, softer, and slightly rough around the edges.
But I knew it.
"Emily?""
A quiet sob.
"Oh, Danny.""
I sat down on the staircase.
"Emily?""
"I'm sorry.""
I couldn't speak.
For several seconds, all I heard was her breathing.
Then I whispered, "You're alive.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
She began crying.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
"From what?""
"Patricia. From Thomas. From everything I discovered.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why didn't you come home?""
"I tried.""
"When?""
"After Dad died.""
My heart pounded.
"What?""
"I went to the house. I stood across the street for almost an hour. I saw you leaving with Vanessa and the children.""
"Why didn't you come inside?""
"Because Patricia was there.""
I remembered that day.
It had been a family gathering after my father's funeral.
Patricia had arrived late.
She had brought food and flowers.
She had hugged my mother.
I had never questioned it.
Emily continued.
"She told me that if I came back, she'd make sure Nia lost everything your father had left her.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Why Nia?""
"Because Dad changed the trust after I disappeared.""
I looked at the blue box.
"What did he change?""
Emily took a breath.
"He made Nia the sole beneficiary of something Patricia had been trying to steal for years.""
"What?""
"My original inheritance.""
I stared at the wall.
Emily continued.
"Danny, listen carefully. Patricia doesn't want Nia's money because she's greedy. She wants it because that trust contains the original ownership documents for the company Dad built.""
I closed my eyes.
"What company?""
"Carter Holdings.""
I remembered the name.
My father had established a construction and property investment business decades earlier.
I thought he had sold most of it before retiring.
Emily's voice dropped.
"Patricia has been using stolen documents to sell properties she never owned. The trust is the only thing that can prove it.""
I looked toward the front door.
"Where are you?""
"I can't tell you over the phone.""
"Emily, I'm your brother.""
"I know.""
"Then let me see you.""
She was silent for a moment.
Then she said:
"Tomorrow. Ten in the morning. Bring the blue box.""
The call ended.
I sat motionless.
Then I noticed something on the screen.
A message had arrived from Melissa Grant.
*Mr. Carter, do not meet Emily without notifying our office. We've just received information that Patricia has filed an emergency petition to gain temporary control of Nia's trust.*
I read it twice.
Patricia wasn't running away.
May you like
She was making her final move.
And she was using my daughter to do it.
