Chapter 9: The Final Battle for the Truth
The old warehouse smelled like rust and rain.
I sat in the passenger seat while my father drove.
Neither of us spoke.
The evidence was in a locked case behind us.
The police were following from a distance.
But Ryan had one demand.
No uniforms.
No weapons.
No backup.
He wanted control.
That was always what people like him wanted.
Control.
I looked at my father.
"You don't have to let me go in.""
He kept his eyes on the road.
"Yes, I do.""
"Dad.""
He finally looked at me.
"Emily, I spent months believing I failed you.""
His voice cracked.
"I won't make that mistake again.""
I reached for his hand.
The same hand that had pulled back the blanket.
The same hand that saved me.
"We go together.""
He nodded.
Together.
When we arrived, the warehouse doors were open.
Too easy.
That meant a trap.
Dad knew it too.
"Stay close.""
We stepped inside.
Ryan stood under a hanging light.
Linda sat tied to a chair.
She looked terrified.
But alive.
For now.
Ryan smiled.
"You came.""
I stared at him.
"You knew I would.""
"Of course.""
He looked at my father.
"She always believed people were better than they were.""
Dad's expression didn't change.
"Let Linda go.""
Ryan laughed.
"You still give orders.""
He walked closer.
"That was always your problem, James.""
My father's face hardened.
"You know my name.""
Ryan smiled.
"I knew everything.""
He looked at me.
"Your father wasn't the only one hiding things.""
I ignored him.
"Why?""
Ryan tilted his head.
"Why what?""
"Why me?""
For the first time, his smile faded.
Then he answered.
"Because of your mother.""
The words hurt.
"My mother?""
"She ruined everything.""
He walked around slowly.
"Your mother found evidence that could destroy powerful people.""
"People like General Walker?""
His eyes changed.
A tiny reaction.
Enough.
Dad noticed.
"Where is Walker?""
Ryan smiled.
"Still protecting himself.""
I stepped forward.
"You killed my mother.""
Ryan looked almost offended.
"No.""
A pause.
"Your mother died because she refused to cooperate.""
My blood ran cold.
"You expect me to believe that?""
"I expect you to understand.""
He pointed at the case.
"People like your mother believed truth mattered more than survival.""
His voice became bitter.
"That's why she lost.""
Linda suddenly spoke.
"Ryan.""
He turned.
"You don't have to do this.""
His face changed.
"Stay quiet.""
"No.""
Linda shook her head.
"I covered for you for years.""
Everyone looked at her.
"I told myself you were angry. Hurt. Misunderstood.""
Tears filled her eyes.
"But you were just cruel.""
Ryan walked toward her.
Dad moved immediately.
"Don't.""
Ryan stopped.
The room became tense.
Then he laughed.
"You really think you can stop me?""
Before anyone could move, a sound came from outside.
Sirens.
Ryan froze.
His eyes went to me.
"You called them.""
I didn't answer.
Because I hadn't.
My father smiled slightly.
"Soldiers don't need to be seen to be ready.""
Ryan's face changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Then the warehouse lights went out.
Darkness.
A struggle.
A crash.
Someone screamed.
When the lights returned, Ryan was gone.
But the evidence case was missing.
Everyone searched.
Linda was safe.
My father was standing.
But Ryan had escaped.
Again.
The police found one thing left behind.
A piece of paper.
A message.
Written in Ryan's handwriting.
Emily,
You still don't understand.
Your father thinks he saved you.
But he doesn't know the last secret.
I read the next line.
And my entire body went cold.
The evidence your mother protected was never about who killed her.
It was about who helped him.
My eyes moved to the final sentence.
The person who betrayed your mother has been beside you this entire time.
I looked up slowly.
Everyone was watching me.
Because they all knew the same thing.
Ryan wasn't talking about General Walker.
He wasn't talking about a stranger.
He was talking about someone in that room.
Someone who had been helping us.
Someone I had trusted.
And then my father's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
"Colonel Bennett.""
A voice came through the speaker.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that made my blood freeze.
Because it belonged to the person who had been searching for Ryan from the beginning.
Detective Ellis.
And he said only one sentence:
"James, you need to listen carefully.""
May you like
A pause.
"Ryan is not the person who killed your wife.""
