Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Never Ryan
The room went completely silent.
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
Ryan Cross.
Not Ryan Bennett.
Not my husband.
A name from my mother's past.
A name my father recognized.
Dad stood frozen beside me.
"How?""
I looked at him.
"How did my mother know his name?""
He didn't answer.
"Dad.""
He took a deep breath.
"I need to tell you everything.""
The detective stepped back, giving us privacy.
For years, my father had carried secrets.
Now they were all coming out at once.
"Your mother wasn't just investigating stolen money.""
He sat beside me.
"She discovered a network of people using fake identities.""
My heart raced.
"Ryan was part of it?""
"We don't know exactly.""
"But his name was in her letter.""
Dad looked at the page.
"Because your mother believed he was dangerous.""
I closed my eyes.
The man I slept beside.
The man who touched my stomach and talked about our baby.
The man who whispered promises.
A predator wearing a familiar face.
"When did you know?""
Dad looked ashamed.
"I suspected someone connected to your mother's case might come after you.""
My voice became quiet.
"So you knew there was a chance.""
"Yes.""
"And you let me marry him?""
The pain on his face was immediate.
"I didn't know it was him.""
That stopped me.
"What do you mean?""
"The name Ryan Cross disappeared years ago.""
The detective returned to the room.
"We verified it. He changed identities multiple times.""
I looked at the letter.
My mother's warning suddenly felt like a message sent through time.
She knew someone like him existed.
She just didn't know he would find me.
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The detective answered.
"Hello?""
He listened.
Then looked at me.
"It's Ryan.""
My heart jumped.
Dad immediately stood.
"Put it on speaker.""
The detective hesitated.
Then nodded.
A few seconds later, Ryan's voice filled the room.
"Emily.""
I closed my eyes.
Hearing him almost broke me.
Because my heart remembered the man I wanted him to be.
Not the man he actually was.
"Where are you?"" I asked.
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
"You still care.""
My hands tightened.
"No.""
A pause.
"I care about my baby.""
His voice changed.
"You think your father is protecting you?""
Dad looked at the phone.
Ryan continued.
"He never told you the truth about your mother.""
"I know.""
Silence.
For the first time, Ryan sounded surprised.
"What?""
"My father told me.""
Another silence.
Then Ryan laughed.
"You really think he told you everything?""
My stomach dropped.
"What else is there?""
Ryan didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Ask him about the night your mother died.""
Dad's face changed.
I looked at him.
"Dad?""
Ryan continued.
"Ask him where he was.""
The call ended.
I stared at my father.
The man who had always been my hero.
The man who taught me honesty.
The man who taught me never to abandon people.
"Where were you?""
Dad didn't speak.
My heart sank.
"Dad.""
His eyes filled with pain.
"I was there.""
The words barely came out.
"What?""
"I was there the night your mother died.""
The room felt like it tilted.
"You told me you were deployed.""
"I was supposed to be.""
"Supposed to be?""
He looked at his hands.
"Your mother called me.""
I whispered:
"Why?""
"Because she was afraid.""
I felt tears fall.
"And you went to her?""
"Yes.""
"Then what happened?""
Dad looked toward the window.
"I arrived too late.""
I didn't know whether to cry or scream.
"You lied to me.""
"I protected you.""
"No.""
My voice broke.
"You protected yourself.""
Dad flinched.
That hurt me.
But I needed him to feel it.
For years, I mourned my mother based on a story that wasn't true.
"You let me believe you weren't there.""
"I thought knowing would make you hate me.""
I looked away.
"Maybe I would have understood.""
He whispered:
"I couldn't risk losing you.""
Before I could answer, the detective's phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
Then his expression changed.
"What?""
Dad looked at him.
"What happened?""
The detective slowly lowered the phone.
"We found Linda.""
Everyone froze.
"Where?""
He looked directly at me.
"At a private residence.""
My stomach tightened.
"Whose residence?""
The detective hesitated.
Then answered:
"Your mother's old house.""
I stopped breathing.
My mother's house had been empty for eight years.
No one was supposed to have access.
But someone was inside.
And they weren't hiding anymore.
Because when the detective sent over the security footage...

I saw Ryan standing in the doorway of my childhood home.
Holding something that belonged to my mother.
