Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Files
The photograph sat between us.
I stared at it.
Ryan.
Same face.
Same smile.
Same eyes.
But underneath the picture was a name I had never seen.
"Michael Cross.""
I looked at Dad.
"I don't understand.""
The investigator placed another document on the table.
"Your husband changed his name five years ago.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
Nobody answered immediately.
That scared me more than the answer.
Dad turned the paper toward himself.
His jaw tightened.
"Emily, did Ryan ever tell you about his past?""
I shook my head.
"He said he didn't have much family.""
The investigator nodded.
"That wasn't true.""
The room felt smaller.
Every memory I had suddenly looked different.
Our first date.
Our wedding.
The way he said he had been hurt before.
The way he convinced me he was afraid of losing me.
How much of it was real?
Dad saw my face.
"Don't blame yourself.""
I whispered:
"I married a stranger.""
The investigator looked at the file.
"Not exactly.""
He pointed to several reports.
"He has a history.""
My hands became cold.
"What kind of history?""
Dad read silently.
Then he closed the folder.
The look on his face scared me.
"What?""
He looked at me.
"Emily...""
I waited.
"Ryan didn't just hurt you.""
A pause.
"He has done this before.""
The room went quiet.
My baby moved inside me.
A reminder that I wasn't alone.
"What do you mean?""
The investigator explained carefully.
"Previous relationships. Similar complaints. Emotional manipulation.
Financial control. Physical incidents that were never fully reported.""
I felt dizzy.
All those times Ryan told me I was lucky he stayed.
All those times Linda told me nobody else would tolerate me.
They weren't random insults.
They were part of a pattern.
Dad stood.
"I want him arrested.""
The investigator nodded.
"We're working on that.""
But then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
"What?""
Everyone looked at him.
He listened.
Then he slowly lowered the phone.
"There's a problem.""
Dad stepped forward.
"What problem?""
The investigator looked directly at me.
"Ryan left before the police arrived.""
My heart dropped.
"What?""
"He knew someone was investigating.""
Dad immediately turned toward the door.
But the investigator wasn't finished.
"He didn't leave alone.""
I felt a cold wave move through my body.
"Who was with him?""
The investigator hesitated.
Then he said:
"Your mother-in-law.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
They had always been a team.
The woman who told me I was dramatic.
The man who told me I was lucky.
Both of them disappearing when the truth came out.
Dad sat beside me.
"We will find them.""
I looked at him.
"What if they come back?""
His answer came instantly.
"Then they will face me.""
For the first time in months, I believed I would survive.
But that night, while I was sleeping in the hospital, my phone lit up.
One message.
From Ryan.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Emily, you don't know the truth about your father.
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
You think he's saving you.
But he never told you what happened to your mother.
My blood turned cold.
Because there was one thing Ryan knew that I didn't.
A secret about my family.
A secret my father had spent years hiding.
May you like
And for the first time since Dad pulled back that blanket...
I wondered if Ryan was the only person who had been lying to me.
