The Day the Truth Came Out / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The House Full of Secrets

The video played on the screen.

Grainy.

Silent.

But clear enough.

Ryan stood inside my childhood home.

The home where I learned to ride a bicycle.

The home where my mother sang while cooking dinner.

The home where I last saw her alive.

In his hand was a small wooden box.

I recognized it immediately.

My mother's jewelry box.

My breath caught.

"How does he have that?""

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Dad stared at the screen.

His face was unreadable.

But I knew him.

He was angry.

Terrified.

And blaming himself.

"I need to go there.""

The detective shook his head.

"Colonel, we're securing the location.""

"He has my daughter's mother's belongings.""

"We know.""

"No, you don't.""

Dad's voice became sharp.

"You don't understand what that means.""

The detective went quiet.

Because maybe he didn't.

Maybe nobody did.

That house wasn't just a building.

It was the last place where my family had been whole.

Two days later, police escorted us there.

I almost couldn't walk inside.

Every corner held a memory.

The kitchen where Mom made pancakes.

The hallway where Dad hung family photos.

The living room where we watched movies every Friday night.

Everything was covered in dust.

Everything except one room.

My mother's office.

The door was open.

Dad stopped.

"I locked this room after she died.""

I looked at him.

"Then someone reopened it.""

Inside, papers covered the desk.

Folders.

Photographs.

Old records.

Ryan had been searching.

The detective moved through the room carefully.

"We found something.""

He held up a document.

Dad took it.

Then his face changed.

"What?""

He handed it to me.

It was a report.

A witness statement.

From the night my mother died.

I read the first line.

I remember seeing James Bennett arguing with the victim.

My hands went cold.

I looked at Dad.

"What is this?""

He took the paper.

"I don't know.""

The detective looked uncomfortable.

"This statement was never included in the official investigation.""

"Why?""

"Because the witness disappeared before giving a full interview.""

My heart raced.

"Dad...""

He shook his head.

"Emily, I never hurt your mother.""

I wanted to believe him.

I did.

But there was something he wasn't telling me.

And after everything...

I couldn't ignore that anymore.

"Then why does this exist?""

He looked devastated.

"Because someone wanted it to.""

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

The officers moved immediately.

Dad stepped in front of me.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He still protected me.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone was walking down the stairs.

Then Linda appeared.

I almost didn't recognize her.

The confident woman who once criticized everything I did was gone.

She looked exhausted.

Afraid.

"Linda.""

Dad's voice was cold.

She looked at me.

"I'm sorry.""

I almost laughed.

Sorry?

After everything?

"You helped him.""

She started crying.

"I didn't know what he was.""

"No.""

My voice shook.

"You knew enough.""

She looked down.

"I knew he was angry.""

Dad stepped forward.

"What are you talking about?""

Linda wiped her tears.

"Ryan wasn't trying to hurt Emily at first.""

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

She looked at me.

"He married you because of your father.""

The room went silent.

My entire body went cold.

"What?""

Linda whispered:

"He needed access to something your mother left behind.""

Dad's expression changed.

"What did she leave?""

Linda looked at the old office.

"The evidence.""

I stared at her.

"What evidence?""

She hesitated.

Then said the words that changed everything.

"The evidence proving who really killed your mother.""

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Linda reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out a flash drive.

"I took this from Ryan.""

The detective stepped forward.

"Why?""

Linda looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in her eyes.

"Because yesterday, Ryan told me he was done pretending.""

A chill ran through me.

"What did he say?""

Linda swallowed.

"He said after he got the evidence...""

She looked at my stomach.

"He would get rid of the last thing connecting him to your family.""

My hand immediately moved to protect my baby.

Dad's face turned pale.

Because he understood before anyone else.

Ryan wasn't just running away.

He was coming back.

And this time...

May you like

he wasn't coming for revenge.

He was coming to erase the final witness.
