Chapter 8: The Place Where It Started

The address on Daniel’s message was burned into my mind.

An abandoned warehouse near the old highway.

A place nobody went anymore.

A place far away from cameras, witnesses, and help.

A place where someone could disappear.

Richard grabbed his coat.

“I’m coming with you.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“Grace.””

“He said come alone.””

“You’re not seriously thinking about walking into a trap.””

I stared at him.

“My daughter is there.””

The words surprised even me.

My daughter.

Not Emma Hale.

Not the baby I cared for.

My daughter.

Richard looked away.

Because he heard it too.

The certainty in my voice.

The thing Vanessa had spent years trying to erase.

“I won’t let him hurt you,” Richard said.

I shook my head.

“You need to stay here.””

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel sees both of us, he might panic.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“He already took Emma.””

“And if he knows you’re coming, he might hurt her.””

That stopped him.

Because it was true.

We both knew Daniel was dangerous.

But we still didn’t know why.

Was he trying to expose Vanessa?

Was he trying to protect Emma?

Or was he the reason everything happened?

Richard looked at me for a long moment.

Then he handed me something.

A small device.

“What is this?””

“A tracker.””

I looked at him.

“You said come alone.””

“I said he shouldn’t see me.””

He closed my fingers around it.

“But I’m not leaving you.””

I nodded.

Then I left.

The warehouse stood at the edge of an empty field.

The sun was disappearing behind the trees.

The building looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Except Daniel.

I parked several yards away.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I was afraid of him.

Because I was afraid of what I would find.

I walked toward the entrance.

The large metal door opened before I touched it.

Daniel stood inside.

No smile.

No calm expression.

Just exhaustion.

“You came.””

I looked past him.

“Where is Emma?””

His eyes moved over my face.

“She’s safe.””

“Where?””

“You’ll see.””

I stepped inside.

The door closed behind me.

The sound echoed.

“You expect me to trust you?””

“No.””

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t expect that.””

“Then why am I here?””

He was quiet.

Then he said:

“Because I need you to remember.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He walked deeper into the warehouse.

“You think the accident took your memory.””

I followed slowly.

“But it didn’t.””

“What are you talking about?””

“You blocked it.””

I stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel turned.

“Your mind buried it because the truth was too painful.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t know what I went through.””

“I was there.””

The words hit me.

I froze.

Daniel looked away.

“I was there when you woke up.””

A memory flashed.

A man’s voice.

Not Richard.

Not a doctor.

Someone saying my name.

“Grace.””

I closed my eyes.

The warehouse disappeared.

For one second, I was somewhere else.

A dark road.

Rain hitting glass.

A car spinning.

A baby crying.

Then darkness.

I opened my eyes.

Daniel was watching me.

“You remembered something.””

I hated that he was right.

“What happened that night?””

His face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Vanessa found out Emma was yours.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He stepped closer.

“She found out because of me.””

My chest tightened.

“You.””

Daniel nodded.

“I was the one who told her.””

I stared.

“What?””

“I found the hospital records.””

My voice became cold.

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to help.””

“You told the woman who stole my baby?””

“I didn’t know what she would do.””

I laughed.

A bitter, broken sound.

“You didn’t know?””

Daniel looked down.

“I thought she would negotiate.””

“Negotiate?””

“She wanted Emma.””

“She wanted my child.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped her.””

His silence was enough.

A sound interrupted us.

A small sound.

A baby crying.

My entire body reacted.

I turned.

“Emma.””

I ran.

Daniel didn’t stop me.

At the back of the warehouse was a small room.

Inside was a chair.

A table.

And Emma.

She was sitting on a blanket.

Alive.

Safe.

The moment she saw me, her face changed.

For one second, she looked confused.

Then she reached toward me.

“Ma…”

The word barely came out.

But it broke me.

I fell to my knees.

“Oh my God.””

I pulled her into my arms.

Her little hands grabbed my jacket.

I held her so tightly.

Two years.

Two years of missing something I didn’t even know I had lost.

“I’m here.””

My tears fell into her hair.

“I’m here, baby.””

Behind me, Daniel stood silently.

For the first time, he looked ashamed.

Not afraid.

Ashamed.

“Why did you take her?””

I didn’t turn around.

“Answer me.””

“I didn’t take her.””

I looked at him.

“Then why is she here?””

“Because Vanessa was going to disappear with her.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew Richard was going to expose her.””

“How?””

“She found out about the documents.””

I held Emma tighter.

“So she kidnapped her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you take Emma?””

“Because I got there first.””

The answer made me angry.

“You expect me to thank you?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I expect you to hate me.””

I stared.

“Good.””

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

A loud crash came from outside.

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

“What was that?””

I stood.

“What?””

He moved toward the window.

Then froze.

“Impossible.””

I looked outside.

Headlights appeared through the broken windows.

More than one car.

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“She followed me.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Vanessa.

Daniel grabbed Emma’s blanket.

“You need to leave.””

I held Emma.

“I’m not leaving without you telling me everything.””

“Grace.””

“No.””

My voice was stronger.

“I spent two years not knowing my own life.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide what I know anymore.””

Daniel looked at me.

Then slowly nodded.

“You’re right.””

He reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small recorder.

“I recorded everything.””

I stared.

“Everything?””

“Vanessa.””

He handed it to me.

“Her plan.””

My fingers closed around it.

Then the warehouse door opened.

Slowly.

A figure stepped inside.

Vanessa.

She looked completely calm.

Almost relieved.

“There you are.””

Emma started crying.

I turned my body, protecting her.

Vanessa’s eyes moved to her daughter.

Then to me.

“You really thought you could take her away from me?””

I felt something inside me change.

Two years ago, I might have lowered my eyes.

Two years ago, I might have believed her.

Not anymore.

“She was never yours.””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“You still don’t understand.””

She stepped forward.

“Everyone thinks I’m the mother.””

“You stole that.””

“I earned it.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You erased me.””

For the first time, her expression cracked.

Just slightly.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“You betrayed me.””

Daniel stood between us.

“You betrayed everyone.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You think you’re the hero now?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at Emma.

“I know exactly what I am.””

A siren sounded in the distance.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You called the police.””

I looked at Daniel.

He hadn’t.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Richard.

*I’m outside. Don’t move.*

Vanessa saw the screen.

Her face changed.

Fear.

Finally.

Real fear.

But then she smiled.

Because she still believed she had one last card.

“You should ask Grace what happened after the accident.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“You think I stole Emma.””

She took one step closer.

“But you forgot the most important part.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What part?””

Vanessa smiled.

“The night you lost your memory…”

She looked at Daniel.

“He wasn’t the only one in the car.””

The warehouse went silent.

Daniel’s face changed.

And I knew.

There was another secret.

A bigger one.

Vanessa whispered:

“Grace, you didn’t lose Emma because of me.””

May you like

She pointed at me.

“You lost her because of what you did.””
