Chapter 5: The Mother Who Forgot
“Vanessa Hale took Emma from you.””
The doctor’s words stayed in the air.
Heavy.
Impossible.
I stared at him, waiting for him to laugh.
To tell me there had been a mistake.
But Dr. Collins only looked at me with the same sadness people had when they looked at someone who had lost something precious.
Something they didn’t even know they had lost.
“No,” I whispered.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.
“That’s not possible.””
Dr. Collins lowered his eyes.
“I know this is difficult.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“You don’t understand.””
I shook my head.
“I have spent two years watching that child grow up.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“I held her when she was sick. I taught her how to walk. I was there when she said her first word.””
My voice broke.
“You’re telling me she was mine the entire time?””
The doctor didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
That was the answer.
I covered my mouth.
A strange pain spread through my chest.
Not the pain of discovering a child was mine.
The pain of realizing I had lost two years of being her mother.
“Why don’t I remember?””
Dr. Collins walked around the desk slowly.
“Because your brain protected you.””
“Protected me?””
“You experienced severe trauma.””
“What trauma?””
He looked toward the closed office door.
Then back at me.
“You were told Emma died.””
The room went silent.
My entire body froze.
“What?””
“After the delivery, Vanessa convinced everyone that the baby didn’t survive.””
My breathing became uneven.
“But she was alive.””
“Yes.””
“Who believed her?””
The doctor looked away.
“Everyone who mattered.””
I felt sick.
“Richard?””
His silence told me everything.
I closed my eyes.
Richard.
The man who had looked at me in the hospital and asked if I saw anything.
The man who knew something was wrong.
The man who still let me leave.
“You knew.””
The doctor looked confused.
“Who?””
“Richard Hale.””
Dr. Collins hesitated.
“I don’t know what he knew.””
“But you know something.””
He sighed.
“Richard was not the same after what happened.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means he disappeared for several months.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he was grieving.””
“Grieving my daughter?””
“Yes.””
The words cut deeper.
“He thought Emma was dead.””
I sat down.
The world felt too large.
Too cruel.
“So Vanessa lied to him too?””
Dr. Collins nodded.
“But why?””
That was the question.
The one that had haunted me since the pool.
Why would a mother push her own child into danger?
Why would she steal a baby?
Why would she destroy my life?
Dr. Collins reached into a drawer.
“I kept this because I knew someday someone might need it.””
He placed an old envelope on the desk.
My name was written on the front.
*Grace Bennett.*
My hands shook.
“What is this?””
“Something that belonged to you.””
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
A hospital bracelet.
And a letter.
The photograph was faded.
A young woman sat in a hospital bed.
Her hair messy.
Her face exhausted.
But smiling.
Holding a tiny baby.
Me.
I was holding Emma.
My daughter.
I touched the picture.
A memory flashed.
A tiny hand wrapped around my finger.
A soft cry.
A voice saying:
“She has your eyes.””
I gasped.
The memory disappeared as quickly as it came.
Dr. Collins watched me.
“Do you remember?””
I shook my head.
“Pieces.””
“That’s normal.””
I opened the letter.
My handwriting stared back at me.
*Dear Emma,*
My breath caught.
The words blurred.
I forced myself to continue.
*If you ever read this, it means something happened and I couldn’t protect you.*
My heart stopped.
I kept reading.
*I don’t know why Vanessa wants you, but I know she will try to make everyone believe you belong to her.*
My hands began trembling.
*You are my daughter. No matter what anyone says.*
A sob escaped my throat.
Then I reached the final lines.
*If Grace forgets, please forgive her. She loved you before she even knew your name.*
I covered my mouth.
The letter fell onto the desk.
I remembered.
Not everything.
But enough.
A hospital room.
Vanessa standing beside my bed.
Her voice.
“You’re confused, Grace.””
My newborn baby in her arms.
“You need rest.””
And me…
believing her.
When I left the hospital, I didn’t go home.
I drove straight to the Hale mansion.
I needed answers.
Not from Richard.
Not from documents.
From Vanessa.
She was in the garden when I arrived.
Of course she was.
She looked calm.
Like she wasn’t responsible for destroying lives.
Like she hadn’t spent years pretending to be someone’s mother.
The moment she saw me, her face changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“You went to the hospital.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stopped in front of her.
“How long?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“How long what?””
“How long did you know?””
She stayed silent.
“How long did you know Emma was my daughter?””
Her expression hardened.
The mask disappeared.
For the first time, I saw the real Vanessa.
Cold.
Angry.
Terrified.
“You should have stayed away.””
My stomach dropped.
That was not denial.
“You admit it.””
“I admit nothing.””
“You stole my child.””
Her eyes flashed.
“Watch your words.””
“My words?””
I stepped closer.
“You took my baby.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“You think biology makes you a mother?””
The cruelty of the sentence stunned me.
“You were gone.””
“I was injured.””
“You forgot her.””
“I was sick.””
“You weren’t there.””
Her voice became sharper.
“But I was.””
I stared at her.
“You lied.””
“I loved her.””
“You stole her.””
“She needed someone.””
“She needed me.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
And there it was.
The thing she had been hiding.
Jealousy.
“She never needed you.””
The words were almost a whisper.
“She needed me.””
I felt my heart break.
Because suddenly, everything made sense.
The way Emma reached for me.
The way Vanessa hated it.
The way she watched me.
Not like an employee.
Like a threat.
“You were jealous of your own daughter loving me.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“You don’t know anything.””
“I know enough.””
Her eyes became darker.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
“What did you sacrifice?””
She looked toward the house.
“Everything.””
I almost laughed.
“You sacrificed nothing. You took everything from me.””
For a moment, she looked like she wanted to say something.
Then she smiled.
A small, frightening smile.
“Be careful, Grace.””
My body went still.
“Why?””
“Because you’re forgetting something.””
“What?””
Vanessa walked closer.
“You may be Emma’s biological mother.””
She lowered her voice.
“But everyone believes she’s mine.””
A chill moved through me.
“You framed me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
She continued.
“And now everyone thinks you tried to hurt her.””
I stared at her.
“Why are you telling me this?””
Her smile disappeared.
“Because I want you to understand something.””
She leaned closer.
“You already lost once.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Before she answered, the sound of footsteps came from behind me.
Richard.
He stood at the edge of the garden.
His face was pale.
He had heard everything.
Vanessa turned.
For the first time, fear crossed her face.
“Richard…”
He didn’t look at her.
He looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
His voice was barely audible.
“How long were you planning to keep my daughter away from me?””
Vanessa froze.
Richard stepped forward.
But before he could say anything else, his phone rang.
He looked down.
A message had arrived.
One sentence.
One name.
And it changed everything.
Because the message wasn’t from a stranger.
May you like
It was from Daniel.
*I know what Vanessa did. But if you want the truth about Emma’s birth, you need to find out what Grace was hiding too.*
