Chapter 3: The Witness Behind the Glass
The name left Richard’s mouth like a confession.
“Daniel.””
I stared at him.
For a moment, I didn’t understand.
“Daniel?””
Richard nodded slowly.
“My brother.””
The room felt colder.
I looked back at the paused video.
The reflection in the glass was blurry, but there was no mistaking the shape of the person standing inside the house.
A tall man.
Dark jacket.
Watching.
Recording.
Daniel Hale.
Vanessa’s brother.
I had met him only a few times during my two years working for the family. He was the kind of person who never stayed long enough for anyone to know him.
Always polite.
Always smiling.
Always leaving before conversations became personal.
But there had always been something strange about him.
Something I couldn’t explain.
Richard grabbed the tablet.
“I need to find him.””
“Wait.””
He looked at me.
“You said someone sent you this?””
“Yes.””
“Did you ask who?””
“I called the number.””
“And?””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“It was disconnected.””
I looked at the frozen image again.
“Daniel recorded this.””
Richard shook his head.
“I don’t know that.””
“But you think it.””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel arrived two hours later.
Not because Richard called him.
Because he was already nearby.
That was the first thing that bothered me.
Richard had barely sent one message before Daniel appeared at the mansion.
As if he had been waiting.
I stood near the living room doorway while the two brothers faced each other.
Daniel looked exactly the way I remembered.
Calm.
Controlled.
His dark hair was perfectly styled. His expensive watch caught the sunlight coming through the windows.
He looked like someone who had never experienced panic.
“Richard,” he said.
His eyes moved around the room.
Then stopped on me.
“Grace.””
I felt my shoulders tense.
“Daniel.””
He smiled slightly.
“I heard there was an accident.””
An accident.
The word sounded wrong.
Richard noticed too.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Everyone knows.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
A small silence followed.
Then Daniel walked further into the room.
“I was visiting yesterday.””
Richard frowned.
“You never told me.””
“I wasn’t planning to stay.””
“Where were you?””
Daniel glanced at the tablet on the table.
Then back at Richard.
“Is that why you called me?””
Richard picked up the tablet.
“You recorded this.””
Daniel didn’t react.
Not even a little.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Richard narrowed his eyes.
“Then why were you standing behind the glass door?””
Daniel looked at the screen.
For the first time, something changed in his expression.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“I was trying to help.””
I almost laughed.
Help?
After everything?
“How?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I saw what happened.””
My heart stopped.
“You saw?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you say anything?””
Daniel’s eyes shifted.
“Because I didn’t understand what I was seeing.””
I stepped forward.
“You saw Vanessa push the stroller.””
His face remained calm.
“I saw Vanessa near the stroller.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“It isn’t.””
Richard stepped between us.
“Enough.””
He looked at Daniel.
“If you have information, you tell me everything.””
Daniel sighed.
“Richard, think carefully before you accuse your wife based on a stranger’s accusation.””
My stomach dropped.
A stranger.
That was how he saw me.
After two years.
After saving Emma.
I was still just an employee.
Daniel continued.
“You have a daughter who almost died. You’re emotional.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Don’t tell me how I feel.””
“I’m telling you to be careful.””
Daniel looked at me.
“People make mistakes when they want someone to blame.””
The words were aimed directly at me.
I understood.
He wasn’t defending Vanessa.
Not exactly.
He was protecting something.
After Daniel left, Richard stayed silent for a long time.
Finally, he spoke.
“My brother has always been complicated.””
I looked at him.
“Complicated?””
Richard sat down.
“He and Vanessa are close.””
“Obviously.””
“No.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Richard looked toward the window.
“When my parents died, Daniel and I were all we had. He was younger. I raised him.””
I listened.
“Vanessa met Daniel before she met me.””
That surprised me.
Richard continued.
“They were friends.””
“Friends?””
“Yes.””
The way he said it made me think there was more.
“Richard.””
He looked at me.
“There are things in my family I should have told you.””
I almost smiled.
“Things you should have told me?””
He looked ashamed.
“I trusted my wife.””
The sentence hung between us.
I thought about Vanessa.
Her cold eyes.
Her calm face after Emma fell.
“Why?””
Richard looked confused.
“Why what?””
“Why would she do it?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
Or because he didn’t want to say.
That night, I stayed at a small motel outside town.
I couldn’t return home.
My apartment was being surrounded by reporters.
The Hale family name attracted attention.
And now my name was attached to it.
I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the ceiling.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
No response.
Only breathing.
“Who is this?””
Silence.
Then a voice.
A woman’s voice.
“Grace?””
I sat up.
“Yes?””
“It’s Mrs. Miller.””
My heart started racing.
“Are you okay?””
“I don’t have much time.””
Her voice was shaking.
“What happened?””
“I found something.””
I stood.
“What?””
“Something about Vanessa.””
I walked toward the window.
“Tell me.””
“She’s been lying about more than the pool.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What do you mean?””
“I found documents.””
“What documents?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Documents showing Emma was never supposed to be with Vanessa.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Grace, you need to listen to me carefully.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Vanessa has been hiding something about Emma’s birth.””
The room suddenly felt silent.
“Mrs. Miller, what are you saying?””
“I’m saying Emma may not be Vanessa’s biological daughter.””
My heart pounded.
“That’s impossible.””
“I saw the papers.””
“What papers?””
“I don’t know everything. But there was a name on them.””
“Whose name?””
Before she could answer, another sound came through the phone.
A door opening.
Mrs. Miller gasped.
“Wait.””
“Mrs. Miller?””
Her breathing became faster.
“Someone is here.””
“Who?””
No answer.
Only a muffled sound.
Then the call ended.
I stared at the phone.
My first instinct was to call back.
I did.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Again.
Nothing.
I grabbed my coat.
I didn’t care about the rumors.
I didn’t care about the cameras.
I needed to know what happened.
When I reached the Hale mansion, every light was on.
The front door was open.
That was wrong.
The Hales always locked the door.
Always.
I stepped inside.
“Mrs. Miller?””
No answer.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
I walked through the hallway.
The same hallway where I had carried Emma after nightmares.
The same hallway where I had heard her first laugh.
But now something felt wrong.
A lamp was knocked over.
A drawer was open.
Papers were scattered across the floor.
Then I saw it.
A single sheet of paper lying near the stairs.
I picked it up.
At the top was a hospital logo.
My eyes moved down the page.
Patient name.
Birth information.
Mother.
Father.
My fingers started shaking.
Because the name listed as Emma’s mother was not Vanessa Hale.
It was someone else.
Someone I knew.
Someone whose name made me forget how to breathe.
May you like
And at the bottom of the document was a handwritten note:
*“If Grace finds this, tell her the truth before Vanessa does.””*
