Chapter 6: The Secret I Was Never Told

Richard read the message three times.

I watched the color drain from his face.

For a few seconds, none of us moved.

The garden was silent except for the sound of the wind moving through the trees.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Richard.””

He looked up slowly.

“Is that from Daniel?””

She already knew.

That frightened me more than anything.

Not because she knew who sent it.

Because she looked like she had expected it.

Richard locked his phone.

“Why would Daniel say Grace was hiding something?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

The anger returned.

“Because Daniel likes creating problems.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

Richard looked at her.

“Is it?””

For the first time since I had met him, I saw doubt in his eyes.

Not confusion.

Not sadness.

Doubt.

Vanessa noticed too.

And she hated it.

“You’re really going to believe her?””

Her finger pointed at me.

“After everything?””

Richard didn’t respond.

“She walked into our lives two years ago with no memory. She doesn’t even know what happened.””

My chest tightened.

“No memory because of what you did.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You’re still blaming me because it’s easier.””

“Easier than what?””

“Accepting that you weren’t there.””

The words hit me.

Because part of me feared they were true.

I had missed two years.

Two years of Emma’s life.

Two years of birthdays.

Two years of first steps.

Two years of moments I could never get back.

Vanessa saw the pain on my face.

And smiled.

That was when Richard stepped forward.

“Stop.””

His voice was quiet.

But dangerous.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Richard—”

“I said stop.””

She stared at him.

“You don’t get to do this anymore.””

A strange silence followed.

Because something had changed.

Richard wasn’t looking at her like a husband.

He was looking at her like a stranger.

Daniel’s message had one instruction.

*Meet me alone.*

Richard wanted to go with me.

I refused.

Not because I trusted Daniel.

Because I needed to know what kind of secrets everyone had been keeping.

The meeting place was an old coffee shop twenty minutes from town.

Daniel was already sitting in the corner when I arrived.

He looked different.

Less confident.

More tired.

Like someone who had spent years carrying something heavy.

“Grace.””

I sat across from him.

“Tell me the truth.””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he placed a folder on the table.

My eyes dropped to it.

“What is that?””

“The reason Vanessa was afraid.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Open it.””

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Emails.

My hands went cold.

The first picture showed Vanessa outside the hospital.

Not three months ago.

Two years ago.

She was holding a baby carrier.

Another picture showed her entering a private office.

A man stood beside her.

I recognized him immediately.

Richard’s old attorney.

“What is this?””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

“That Vanessa planned everything.””

I looked through the papers.

There were hospital records.

Financial transfers.

Signed agreements.

Then I saw a document with my name.

My heart stopped.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked away.

“That’s the part you need to know.””

I opened it.

The title was simple.

*Temporary Custody Agreement.*

My eyes scanned the page.

The mother’s name.

Mine.

The child.

Emma Bennett.

The date.

Two years ago.

But underneath my signature was something else.

A statement.

*Mother agrees to voluntary separation due to inability to provide care.*

I stared.

“I didn’t sign this.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why is my signature here?””

“Because Vanessa forged it.””

The room spun.

“She stole my baby.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you stop her?””

Daniel looked down.

That was the first time I saw guilt.

Real guilt.

“I tried.””

“Not hard enough.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Not hard enough.””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“After Emma was born, Vanessa was obsessed with becoming a mother.””

“She was grieving.””

“Yes.””

His eyes lifted.

“But grief doesn’t excuse what she did.””

I waited.

“She found out Richard’s company was facing a scandal. Investors were threatening to leave. The family image mattered.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with Emma?””

“Everything.””

Daniel tapped the papers.

“Vanessa believed having a baby would fix everything.””

My stomach turned.

“She used Emma.””

“Yes.””

“But why me?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“Because you were the easiest person to erase.””

The words hurt.

“Explain.””

“You had no family nearby. No powerful connections. After the accident, your memory was damaged. Vanessa convinced everyone you had abandoned the baby.””

I looked down.

“She told people I left?””

Daniel nodded.

“She told Richard you were unstable.””

My hands curled.

“And he believed her?””

“He wanted to.””

That answer hurt more.

“Why?””

“Because the truth was too painful.””

I looked at him.

“You’re defending him.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I’m explaining him.””

I closed the folder.

“What else am I hiding?””

His expression changed.

“There’s something about the accident.””

My heart slowed.

“What about it?””

“You weren’t just injured.””

I waited.

“You were attacked.””

The words barely registered.

“What?””

Daniel leaned closer.

“Two years ago, someone tampered with your car.””

I stared.

“Who?””

“We don’t know.””

“But you think it was Vanessa.””

“I think Vanessa knows more than she admitted.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Then why the message?

Why tell me now?

“What do you want from me, Daniel?””

He looked surprised.

“What?””

“You’ve known for two years.””

Silence.

“You watched me work in that house. You watched me take care of Emma. You knew she was my daughter.””

His face fell.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“But you knew eventually.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed quiet.””

He looked away.

“I was afraid.””

I laughed softly.

“Afraid?””

“Yes.””

“Of Vanessa?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

When I returned to the Hale mansion, Richard was waiting.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

“Where were you?””

“With Daniel.””

His expression tightened.

“What did he tell you?””

“That Vanessa stole Emma.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Like hearing it from me made it real.

“He showed me documents.””

“I need to see them.””

I handed him the folder.

He opened it.

The silence lasted several minutes.

Then he whispered:

“Oh my God.””

I watched him read.

The man who had built an empire.

The man who had controlled boardrooms and negotiations.

Now he looked completely broken.

“He forged my signature.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Richard looked up.

“Your custody agreement.””

He pointed at the page.

“This signature.””

His finger moved to the bottom.

“This is my attorney’s signature.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

Richard stood quickly.

“It means Vanessa didn’t do this alone.””

A terrible feeling formed inside me.

“Who helped her?””

Richard grabbed his phone.

“I need to call my attorney.””

But before he could dial, his phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

Then slowly sit down.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

Then:

“When?””

Another pause.

Richard looked at me.

And I knew.

Something had happened.

“What is it?””

He ended the call.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“The hospital where you gave birth…”

He looked at the folder.

“The doctor who signed these records was found.””

I stepped closer.

“And?””

Richard swallowed.

“He disappeared two years ago.””

My blood went cold.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Then who called?””

Richard looked at the phone screen.

The caller’s number was hidden.

But there was a voicemail.

He pressed play.

A man’s voice filled the room.

Weak.

Terrified.

“Richard Hale…”

The voice trembled.

“I know what happened to Grace.””

I froze.

The message continued.

“And I know who ordered the accident.””

Richard and I looked at each other.

Then the voice said the final words:

“But if you want Grace to remember everything…”

A pause.

May you like

A breath.

“You need to find the person who was in the car with her that night.””
