Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed

The hospital looked exactly the same.

That was the cruelest part.

The same entrance.

The same lights.

The same quiet halls.

Four years had passed.

But David felt like he had stepped back into the worst night of his life.

Maya walked beside him.

Lauren followed silently.

Sophie stayed with a family friend in the waiting area.

David had wanted her far away from this.

Far away from another adult’s secrets.

They reached the old oncology floor.

Nobody spoke.

Then a voice came from behind them.

“I knew you would come.””

David turned.

Daniel stood at the end of the hallway.

Older.

Tired.

But still familiar.

His brother.

The person he had trusted most.

David’s fists tightened.

“You knew?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I hoped you would understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That Anna was trying to destroy us.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You always hated me.””

“No.””

Maya’s voice was cold.

“I just saw you.””

Daniel ignored her.

He looked at David.

“Anna changed after the diagnosis.””

David stared.

“She became afraid.””

“She became smart.””

Daniel laughed.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“She became paranoid.””

David stepped closer.

“You stole from her.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“So she told you that.””

“The documents told me.””

Daniel sighed.

“Documents can be manipulated.””

“And videos?””

Silence.

Daniel looked away.

“You found those.””

“Yes.””

His face hardened.

“Then you found what she wanted you to find.””

David frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Anna was dying.””

“That doesn’t excuse anything.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“But it explains everything.””

He looked around the hallway.

“She was scared. She knew she was losing control.””

David’s voice became quiet.

“She knew you were stealing.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I borrowed money.””

“Without telling her.””

“I was going to pay it back.””

“When?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

David nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You think I’m the villain.””

“You threatened Lauren.””

Daniel laughed.

“Lauren?””

His expression changed.

“You really believe her?””

David froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Lauren.

“She never told you everything.””

Lauren went pale.

David turned.

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel smiled.

“Ask her.””

Lauren shook her head.

“David.””

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Ask her why Anna’s accident happened.””

The hallway became silent.

David looked at Lauren.

Her face had changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

“Lauren.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

Daniel laughed.

“Of course you were.””

David’s voice sharpened.

“Tell me what?””

Lauren looked at him.

“The night Anna died…”

She swallowed.

“I was there.””

David stared.

“You already told me that.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I mean I was there before the accident.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel watched.

Waiting.

David whispered:

“What did you see?””

Lauren looked down.

“Anna wasn’t alone.””

“Who was with her?””

Lauren looked at Daniel.

And Daniel stopped smiling.

David felt the answer before she spoke.

“Daniel.””

The hallway went silent.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Lauren continued.

“He was arguing with her.””

David looked at his brother.

“About the will.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“That’s a lie.””

Lauren stepped back.

“Anna recorded everything.””

David froze.

“What?””

Lauren looked at him.

“The camera in her car.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

A flash of fear.

Just one second.

But David saw it.

“You destroyed the video.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You destroyed the proof.””

Daniel suddenly laughed.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

David took one step forward.

“Where is it?””

Daniel stared.

Then slowly smiled.

“You really want the truth?””

David didn’t answer.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Then find the car.””

David froze.

“What?””

“The car.””

Daniel whispered.

“Because Anna left the final message there.””

A hospital alarm sounded somewhere down the hallway.

Daniel stepped back.

And before anyone could stop him, he turned and walked away.

David started after him.

Then stopped.

Because Lauren grabbed his arm.

“David.””

He looked at her.

Her eyes were full of tears.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

She looked toward the exit.

“Daniel wasn’t the only one who knew about the car.””

David felt cold.

“Who else?””

Lauren whispered:

“The person who destroyed the first video.””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who has been helping Daniel all these years.””

David’s phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

A photo.

He opened it.

It was a picture of Anna’s car.

And standing beside it…

was someone David trusted.

Someone he never expected.

Someone who had been at the wedding.
