Chapter 4: The Box Anna Hid
David stared at the black box in Maya’s hands.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The music downstairs continued.
A soft piano melody floated through the hallway, completely unaware that a wedding had already ended without anyone announcing it.
Sophie stood beside Maya, twisting the edge of her flower-girl dress between her fingers.
David looked at his daughter.
“Sophie.””
She looked up.
“Come here.””
She hesitated.
Then she walked into his arms.
He held her tightly.
“Tell me what happened.””
Sophie looked toward Lauren.
Lauren immediately shook her head.
“Sophie, sweetheart, you must have misunderstood.””
David’s expression hardened.
“Let her speak.””
Lauren went quiet.
Sophie swallowed.
“I came back because I forgot my ribbon.””
David glanced at Maya.
Maya nodded.
“She wanted the blue one from the table outside.””
Sophie looked down.
“And I saw Lauren.””
Lauren crossed her arms.
“You saw me holding a box.””
Sophie shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became smaller.
“You put it inside your bag.””
The room went silent.
David looked at Lauren.
“Is that true?””
Lauren didn’t answer.
“Lauren.””
She looked away.
That was enough.
David reached for the box.
Lauren stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Again.
That word.
A warning.
A fear.
David took the box from Maya.
It was old.
Black velvet.
The corners were worn.
He recognized it immediately.
Anna kept her most important things inside it.
Letters.
Photographs.
Little memories she never wanted to lose.
Things she once told him were proof that ordinary moments were actually the ones worth saving.
David opened the lid.
Inside was a stack of papers.
A small USB drive.
And a photograph.
He picked up the photo first.
His hands froze.
It was Anna.
Standing outside a hospital.
But she wasn’t alone.
Lauren was beside her.
Younger.
Smiling.
David looked at Lauren.
“You told me you never met her.””
Lauren’s face tightened.
“I told you I never knew her like you did.””
“That is not what I asked.””
She looked down.
Maya took the photograph from him.
“She was already in your life before you met her.””
Lauren whispered, “Yes.””
David felt something break inside him.
“Why?””
Lauren closed her eyes.
“Because Anna asked me to help her.””
“With what?””
She didn’t answer.
David grabbed the papers.
The first page was covered in Anna’s handwriting.
If you are reading this, I need you to understand something.
Lauren did not come into our lives by accident.
David’s heart pounded.
He read faster.
I asked her to meet me.
He looked up.
Lauren’s eyes were wet.
“She’s telling the truth.””
David stared.
“You could have told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
“No.””
His voice sharpened.
“You hid everything.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Lauren looked toward Sophie.
“Of losing you.””
David laughed bitterly.
“So you built a relationship with me using a secret.””
“I didn’t plan it.””
“But you continued.””
Lauren had no answer.
Maya stepped closer.
“David, read the rest.””
He looked down.
The letter continued.
David, I know you will be angry. I know you will feel betrayed.
But please don’t let that anger blind you.
Lauren was there when I couldn’t be.
David stopped.
His eyes moved slowly across the page.
When my body started failing, I needed someone who could help me prepare.
Not for my death.
For your life after mine.
His breathing changed.
Maya whispered, “What does that mean?””
David kept reading.
You were so focused on saving me that you forgot Sophie needed a future.
A tear slipped down his face.
Because it was true.
During Anna’s final months, he had refused to accept reality.
He researched treatments.
Doctors.
Trials.
Anything.
Everything.
He had spent every second fighting a battle that was already ending.
And Anna had known.
She had seen him breaking.
I asked Lauren to watch over Sophie if something happened.
But I also warned her.
David looked up.
Lauren’s eyes were closed.
“She warned you?””
Lauren nodded.
“She told me never to replace her.””
The words were barely audible.
“She told me Sophie didn’t need another mother.””
David looked at his daughter.
Sophie was listening quietly.
Anna’s voice existed only on paper now.
But somehow, she was still protecting her.
The next line caught his attention.
If Lauren ever makes Sophie feel small, afraid, or unwanted, then she has forgotten the promise she made to me.
David looked at Lauren.
“Did you?””
Lauren’s face crumpled.
“I made mistakes.””
“You scared her.””
“I know.””
“You broke her necklace.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Lauren looked at Sophie.
“Because I was jealous.””
The confession shocked everyone.
Even Lauren.
“I hated that she could hold something from Anna and still feel close to her.””
David stared.
“She’s a child.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“That’s why I hate myself for it.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Sophie quietly asked:
“Did you hate my mom?””
Lauren looked at her.
The question destroyed whatever defense she had left.
“No.””
Sophie waited.
Lauren wiped her tears.
“No, Sophie. I never hated your mom.””
“Then why did you act like she was bad?””
Lauren looked down.
“Because I was afraid I would never matter.””
David looked away.
For the first time, he saw something other than anger.
He saw insecurity.
Pain.
But pain did not erase what happened.
The USB drive sat inside the box.
Maya noticed.
“What is that?””
David picked it up.
A label was written across it.
Anna’s handwriting.
For David. When he is ready.
Lauren went completely still.
David noticed.
“You know what’s on this.””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
“What is it?””
“A video.””
“From Anna?””
Lauren nodded.
David looked at the small device.
Four years.
Four years since he heard his wife’s voice.
Four years since he saw her smile.
Four years since he had to learn how to breathe without her.
His fingers tightened around it.
Then Sophie spoke.
“Daddy?””
He looked at her.
“Do you still want to marry Lauren?””
The question was so simple.
So innocent.
It hurt more than anything else.
David knelt.
“No.””
Sophie’s eyes filled.
“Because of me?””
“No.””
He held her hands.
“Never because of you.””
“Because Mom?””
David looked at the letter.
Then the box.
Then Lauren.
“Because I should have listened when people showed me the truth.””
A phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Lauren’s phone.
Another message.
This time, David saw the preview.
It was from Dr. Reeves.
You need to tell David the whole truth before he watches Anna’s video.
David looked at Lauren.
“What truth?””
May you like
Lauren didn’t answer.
And that frightened him more than anything.
