Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The phone continued ringing.

Nobody reached for it.

Nobody spoke.

The name on the screen glowed in the quiet room.

Dr. Michael Reeves.

Anna’s oncologist.

David stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Lauren grabbed the phone.

“No.””

He stepped forward.

“Why is Anna’s doctor calling you?””

“It’s not what you think.””

“Then what is it?””

Lauren looked at Maya.

Then at Sophie.

Then back at David.

For the first time since he met her, she looked completely lost.

“I can explain.””

David’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Four years.””

Lauren swallowed.

“What?””

“Four years I trusted you.””

“David…”

“Four years you sat at this house. You held Sophie’s hand. You told me you understood what we lost.””

His eyes moved to the phone.

“And now Anna’s doctor is calling you on our wedding day.””

Lauren’s silence became unbearable.

Maya crossed her arms.

“Answer it.””

Lauren looked at her.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because it will make things worse.””

David felt his stomach drop.

“Worse?””

The phone stopped ringing.

A second later, a voicemail notification appeared.

Lauren looked terrified.

David noticed.

“Play it.””

“No.””

“Play it.””

“David, please.””

“Play it.””

His voice broke.

“Please.””

Lauren looked at the phone.

Then she pressed the screen.

A man’s voice filled the room.

“Lauren, this is Dr. Reeves. I know you asked me not to contact you again, but I found something in Anna’s medical file that you need to see. I should have told David years ago, but Anna made me promise to wait until he was ready.””

David froze.

Maya whispered, “What?””

The voicemail continued.

“Please call me back. It concerns the night Anna died.””

The message ended.

Nobody moved.

Sophie looked up.

“Daddy?””

David immediately turned.

“Go with Aunt Maya.””

“But—”

“Now, sweetheart.””

She looked scared.

Not because of him.

Because she understood something serious was happening.

Maya took her hand.

“Come on.””

As they left, David kept his eyes on Lauren.

“The night Anna died.””

Lauren sat down slowly.

“I didn’t want you to hear it like this.””

“Like what?””

“Like a stranger.””

David laughed quietly.

“You are a stranger.””

The sentence hurt both of them.

Lauren looked down.

“When Anna was sick, she was afraid.””

David said nothing.

“She knew she wasn’t going to survive.””

“You don’t get to speak for her.””

“I’m not.””

Lauren’s eyes filled.

“I’m telling you what happened.””

David waited.

“I met Anna because she found me.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“She contacted me.””

“That’s a lie.””

“No.””

Lauren shook her head.

“She found out I worked with financial planning. She wanted advice.””

David stared.

“Why?””

“Because she was trying to protect Sophie.””

The room became colder.

“From what?””

Lauren looked at the broken locket.

“From you.””

David stepped back.

“What?””

“She was afraid that after she died, you would stop living.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Lauren wiped her face.

“She loved you. But she knew you. She knew you would spend the rest of your life trying to keep her alive through Sophie.””

David’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not why she contacted you.””

“No.””

Lauren whispered.

“It’s why she trusted me.””

David looked at her.

“Then why hide it?””

“Because Anna asked me to.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Lauren reached into her purse.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She pulled out another envelope.

David recognized the handwriting immediately.

Anna.

His knees almost gave out.

“Where did you get that?””

Lauren looked at it.

“She gave it to me.””

The room spun.

“Four years ago.””

David’s voice became dangerous.

“You had a letter from my wife for four years?””

“I was supposed to give it to you when you were ready.””

“And you decided I wasn’t?””

“No.””

Lauren looked at him.

“I decided you would hate me.””

David stared.

“Because you knew what it said.””

“Yes.””

A confession.

Simple.

Quiet.

Terrible.

“What did it say?””

Lauren’s fingers tightened around the envelope.

“She told me to leave you alone.””

David froze.

“What?””

“She told me you would confuse gratitude with love.””

The words cut.

“She said you would marry me because you needed someone to save you.””

David looked away.

Because a small part of him wondered if Anna had been right.

Lauren continued.

“She also said something else.””

“What?””

Her voice broke.

“She said if I ever hurt Sophie, David would know.””

A silence followed.

David looked toward the door where his daughter had left.

Anna had known.

Somehow.

She had known.

The wedding music started downstairs.

The guests were waiting.

The entire world was waiting for him to walk forward and pretend everything was fine.

But nothing was fine.

Not anymore.

Lauren placed the envelope on the table.

“Read it.””

David didn’t move.

“Why?””

“Because I’m tired of carrying it.””

He looked at her.

“And what happens after?””

Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then you’ll finally know why Anna chose me.””

David stared at the envelope.

Then slowly reached for it.

The moment his fingers touched the paper, someone knocked on the door.

Maya’s voice came from outside.

“David?””

He turned.

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“It’s Sophie.””

His heart stopped.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“She found something in the hallway.””

David opened the door.

Maya stood there holding a small black box.

Sophie was behind her, clutching her aunt’s hand.

David looked at the box.

He knew it.

Because it belonged to Anna.

Maya whispered:

“David… Sophie says she saw Lauren hide this the morning of the wedding.””

David looked at Lauren.

Lauren looked at the box.

May you like

And for the first time—

she didn’t deny it.
