Chapter 8: The Truth Anna Recorded

The second video opened with Anna sitting in their kitchen.

Not the hospital.

Not a goodbye.

A normal day.

That hurt more.

Because David remembered that kitchen.

The coffee machine.

The chair where Anna always sat.

The window where she watched Sophie play outside.

Anna looked directly into the camera.

“David, if you’re seeing this, then I was right.””

David sat down.

His legs suddenly felt weak.

Anna continued.

“I hoped I was wrong.””

A pause.

“But I don’t think I was.””

Lauren stood behind him.

Maya sat beside Sophie.

Everyone watched.

Anna took a breath.

“Daniel came to see me yesterday.””

David’s face changed.

The video continued.

“He wanted access to my accounts.””

Maya whispered, “Oh my God.””

Anna looked tired.

But focused.

“I told him no.””

She paused.

“And that’s when I realized he wasn’t asking.””

David closed his eyes.

Daniel.

His own brother.

Anna continued.

“He said I was being emotional because of my illness.””

David’s hands curled into fists.

“He said after I died, David would need someone practical.””

A tear fell down Anna’s cheek in the video.

“That hurt.””

David looked away.

Because he knew that pain.

Not the pain of illness.

The pain of betrayal.

Anna continued.

“I trusted Daniel for years.””

A pause.

“But sometimes people don’t reveal who they are until they want something.””

The video shook slightly.

Like Anna had moved the camera.

Then she pulled out a document.

“My lawyer has a copy of this.””

She held it up.

“My new will.””

David leaned forward.

“Anna…”

She smiled sadly.

“I know you’ll be angry that I kept this from you.””

Her eyes softened.

“But I know you.””

A small smile.

“You would have tried to fix everything.””

David almost laughed through tears.

Because she was right.

Anna looked back at the camera.

“I need you to understand something.””

The room became completely silent.

“Lauren is not your enemy.””

Lauren covered her mouth.

Anna continued.

“She helped me.””

David looked at Lauren.

“She helped me prepare for a future I didn’t want to imagine.””

Anna’s voice became quieter.

“But Daniel found out.””

The screen froze for a moment.

Then continued.

“He threatened her.””

David turned.

“Threatened her with what?””

Lauren looked down.

Anna answered.

“He threatened to tell David that Lauren was only helping me because she wanted my family.””

David’s eyes widened.

That was exactly what he had believed.

Anna continued.

“He knew David’s grief would make him suspicious.””

Lauren whispered:

“He used your pain.””

David stared at the screen.

Anna looked directly into the camera.

“David.””

He froze.

It felt like she was looking at him.

“Please listen.””

Her voice broke.

“You cannot punish yourself for loving me.””

The room disappeared.

There was only Anna.

“Your life does not end because mine does.””

David covered his face.

Sophie moved closer.

Anna continued.

“And Sophie deserves a father who lives.””

The video paused.

Then Anna said:

“One more thing.””

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you while they are controlling your choices.””

David looked at Lauren.

Then at the screen.

Anna continued.

“If Daniel finds this video, he will know I left proof.””

She looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

A sound came from the recording.

Someone knocking.

Anna looked toward the door.

Her face changed.

The video shook.

“David?””

Her voice became urgent.

“If you’re watching this…”

The door opened.

The recording cut.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Maya whispered:

“That was it?””

David stared.

“No.””

Because he knew.

Something was missing.

A final moment.

A final truth.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

Now you understand why she chose me to keep the secret.

David typed immediately.

Where are you?

The reply came instantly.

At the place where Anna lost everything.

David looked at the message.

Then he knew.

The hospital.

Maya stood.

“We’re going.””

David nodded.

But before they left, Sophie grabbed his hand.

“Daddy.””

He looked down.

“What?””

She held the broken locket.

“I think Mom wanted you to have this.””

David stared.

The broken chain.

The hidden letter.

The truth.

He took it.

And something inside the damaged silver heart moved.

A tiny piece had been hidden inside.

A folded paper.

David opened it.

Only one sentence.

May you like

Anna’s handwriting.

The accident was not an accident.
