Chapter 7: The Secret She Was Running From

The medical file stayed on my desk for almost an hour.
I didn’t move.
I didn’t speak.
I just stared at the words printed on the page, hoping they would somehow rearrange themselves into something less terrifying.
They didn’t.
Victoria Hart.
Patient records.
A diagnosis.
A condition that explained everything and nothing at the same time.
When I first saw it, my mind immediately jumped to one conclusion.
She was sick.
Seriously sick.
And maybe, somewhere beneath all the lies, there was a desperate woman who didn’t know how else to survive.
But then I remembered Ethan standing at my wedding.
I remembered the fake pregnancy.
The recordings.
The plan.
Being sick did not excuse destroying my son’s trust.
It did not excuse manipulating an entire family.
But I needed the truth.
All of it.
I picked up my phone and called Rebecca.
She answered quickly.
“Daniel?””
“I found something.””
“What?””
“A medical record.””
A pause.
“What kind?””
“Victoria’s.””
Another pause.
Then her voice became careful.
“Send it to me.””
I took a picture and waited.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Finally, my phone rang.
Rebecca sounded different.
Not surprised.
Concerned.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“You need to understand something.””
“I’m listening.””
“This record changes the situation.””
My grip tightened.
“How?””
“Victoria has a serious heart condition.””
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, the anger disappeared.
“She’s dying?””
“No.””
Rebecca answered quickly.
“But she needs a transplant.””
I looked at Ethan.
He was sitting on his bed, quietly drawing.
“She needed a husband.””
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
“She needed legal stability. Someone who could support her. Someone with resources.””
I felt sick.
“So she chose me.””
“Probably.””
The word hurt.
Probably.
Because that meant my worst fear was true.
She didn’t fall in love with me.
She selected me.
“Rebecca, can someone with that condition fake a pregnancy?””
“Physically? Possibly.””
“Why?””
“To create urgency. Sympathy. Commitment.””
I looked at the papers.
Everything Victoria did suddenly made sense.
The timing.
The wedding.
The pressure.
She needed me emotionally trapped before I discovered the truth.
But there was one question I couldn’t answer.
“Why Ethan?””
Rebecca was silent.
Then she said:
“That’s what you need to find out.””
The next morning, I went to see Victoria.
Not because I forgave her.
Not because I wanted to save her.
Because I needed answers.
She agreed to meet at a quiet park near her sister’s house.
When I arrived, she was sitting on a bench.
No makeup.
No perfect dress.
No carefully practiced smile.
For the first time since I met her, she looked like a real person.
She looked exhausted.
“Daniel.””
I stopped several feet away.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“I knew you would ask that.””
“Then answer.””
She took a breath.
“I was scared.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared of dying alone.””
I said nothing.
She continued.
“When the doctors told me I needed a transplant, everything changed.””
“So you found me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
Maybe because it was the first honest thing she had ever given me.
“How long did you know about me?””
She looked away.
“Six months before we met.””
My stomach tightened.
“Six months?””
“Mark told me about you.””
Of course.
Mark.
“What did he tell you?””
“That you were wealthy.””
I laughed bitterly.
“There it is.””
She flinched.
“But he also told me something else.””
“What?””
“That you were lonely.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
Because it was true.
After Claire died, loneliness had become part of my identity.
Victoria knew exactly where the cracks were.
“I didn’t plan to hurt you.””
“You planned everything else.””
She looked down.
“I thought I could become the person you needed.””
“You pretended.””
“Yes.””
The admission was quiet.
“But then something happened.””
“What?””
She looked toward me.
“I started caring.””
I almost believed her.
Almost.
Then I remembered Ethan.
“What about my son?””
Her expression changed.
“I never wanted to hurt Ethan.””
“But you did.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
My voice became sharper.
“Do you know what it feels like for a nine-year-old boy to investigate the woman living in his house because he doesn’t trust her?””
Victoria started crying.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made choices.””
The silence between us grew.
Then I asked the question that mattered.
“Why did you need the trust?””
Her face changed.
A small movement.
But enough.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“Don’t lie.””
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“Claire knew.””
That stopped her.
“What?””
I pulled out my phone.
I showed her the video.
Her expression changed the second she saw Mark.
She whispered:
“He had that?””
“You knew about Claire?””
“No.””
The answer was too fast.
I watched her carefully.
“You expect me to believe that?””
She stood.
“I didn’t know about your wife.””
“Then why did Mark say your name?””
She froze.
That was the moment.
The moment I knew there was still something she hadn’t told me.
“What else are you hiding?””
Victoria sat back down slowly.
Her hands were shaking.
“Mark wasn’t just helping me.””
“What does that mean?””
“He was using me too.””
I stared.
“Explain.””
She looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
“Mark promised me he could get me access to your family’s money.””
“And?””
“He lied.””
“How?””
“Because he never planned to help me.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then what did he plan?””
Victoria looked at me.
“After you married me, he planned to remove me.””
The park suddenly felt silent.
“Remove you?””
She nodded.
“He told me once Ethan was under my influence, everything would be easier.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Daniel…”
“What?””
“Mark wanted Ethan gone.””
I felt the world stop.
“Gone?””
She nodded.
“And I think…”
Her voice broke.
“I think he was the one who tried to make Claire disappear too.””
I stood there frozen.
Because for years, I had believed Claire’s death was a tragedy.
An accident.
A cruel twist of fate.
But now…
May you like
For the first time…
I wondered if it had been something else.
