The Bride’s Perfect Lie / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The name on the bank document belonged to Thomas Reed.

My former financial advisor.

My friend.

A man who had helped me rebuild my life after Claire died.

I remembered the first night I met him.

I was sitting alone in my office, surrounded by paperwork I didn’t understand.

Insurance.

Assets.

Legal documents.

Everything Claire and I had built together suddenly felt meaningless.

Thomas had stayed late with me.

He had poured two cups of coffee.

Then he said:

“Daniel, grief makes people feel like they’re drowning. My job is to make sure you don’t sink.””

I believed him.

I trusted him.

And now his name was sitting in front of me.

Connected to Victoria.

Connected to Mark.

Connected to a plan that had almost destroyed my family.

“I need to talk to him.””

Rebecca looked concerned.

“Not alone.””

“He doesn’t know I know.””

“That’s exactly why you shouldn’t go alone.””

I looked at the evidence.

“I need answers.””

She nodded.

“Then we get them carefully.””

That afternoon, I met Thomas at a coffee shop.

The same place where we used to discuss my investments.

The same table where he had congratulated me when I decided to open a second business.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Daniel.””

He stood up and hugged me.

The gesture made my stomach turn.

“How are you holding up?””

I sat down.

“I’ve had better weeks.””

He sighed.

“I heard about the wedding.””

Everyone had.

The story had spread online.

A wealthy businessman.

A fake pregnancy.

A shocking wedding collapse.

People loved watching someone else’s disaster.

“I’m sorry,” Thomas said.

I watched his face.

Looking for guilt.

Fear.

Anything.

But he looked exactly the same.

That almost made it worse.

“I need to ask you something.””

“Of course.””

“Do you know Victoria Hart?””

A tiny pause.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I leaned back.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“Never met her?””

“No.””

I placed my phone on the table.

Then I opened the bank transfer.

Thomas stopped smiling.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

“What is this?””

I slid the phone toward him.

“You tell me.””

He looked at the screen.

Then back at me.

“Daniel…”

“That money went to Victoria.””

He said nothing.

“So I’ll ask again.””

I leaned forward.

“Do you know her?””

The coffee shop suddenly felt too quiet.

Finally, Thomas sighed.

“I can explain.””

Those four words.

Everyone says them when the truth is already impossible to hide.

“How long?””

He looked away.

“Daniel…”

“How long have you been involved?””

His eyes lowered.

And that was the answer.

I felt something crack inside me.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

Disappointment.

Because betrayal from enemies is expected.

Betrayal from friends changes the way you see the world.

“I trusted you.””

Thomas swallowed.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became quieter.

“You were there when Claire died.””

His face changed.

“Don’t bring Claire into this.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t understand.””

I stared at him.

“Then make me understand.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I didn’t start this.””

“Who did?””

Silence.

Then:

“Mark.””

Of course.

Always Mark.

“What was the plan?””

Thomas looked around.

Lowering his voice.

“You need to leave.””

I almost laughed.

“Excuse me?””

“This isn’t safe.””

“Now you care?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You listen.””

People nearby looked over.

But I didn’t care.

“You helped them enter my life.””

Thomas looked down.

“I gave Mark information.””

My heart stopped.

“What information?””

“Your financial situation.””

I stared.

“You gave him my private information?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His silence answered before he did.

“Debt.””

I froze.

“What?””

Thomas looked ashamed.

“I owed money.””

“To who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Thomas.””

He looked at me.

“To Mark.””

The pieces finally started connecting.

Mark wasn’t just working with Victoria.

He was controlling everyone around me.

“How many people?””

Thomas looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

That answer was worse.

I left the coffee shop and called Rebecca immediately.

When I finished explaining, she was silent.

Then she said:

“Daniel, there’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

“I checked the property records.””

“And?””

“Victoria wasn’t trying to marry you only for money.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

“She was trying to gain access to something else.””

“What?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“Your family trust.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if there’s something inside it she wants.””

I walked toward my car.

“There isn’t anything special.””

“Daniel.””

Her voice became serious.

“Are you sure?””

I stopped.

Because suddenly I remembered something.

Something Claire told me years ago.

Something I had forgotten.

Before she died, Claire had given me an envelope.

She told me:

“Don’t open this unless something happens to me.””

At the time, I thought it was about insurance.

Grief made me put it away.

I never opened it.

“Rebecca.””

“Yes?””

“I need to check something.””

I drove home faster than I should have.

The envelope was hidden in my office.

A place I rarely entered since Claire’s death.

My hands shook as I found it.

Dust covered the top.

Claire’s handwriting was still visible.

*For Daniel. Only if I’m gone.*

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

And a small flash drive.

I read the first line.

Then my entire body went cold.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, someone is trying to take what belongs to Ethan.*

I stopped breathing.

Because Claire had written this letter years before Victoria ever entered our lives.

Years before the fake pregnancy.

Years before the wedding.

I kept reading.

*I discovered something about your family before I died. Something your father hid from you.*

My father.

I sat down.

The room spun.

Then I reached for the flash drive.

There was only one file.

One video.

Created seven years earlier.

The screen loaded.

And the first face that appeared…

was Claire’s.

She looked tired.

Scared.

May you like

And behind her, sitting in the background…

was Mark Lawson.
