The Bride’s Perfect Lie / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Truth Claire Left Behind

I watched the video three times.

The first time, I couldn’t believe it.

The second time, I searched for some mistake.

Some detail that would prove I misunderstood.

The third time, I finally accepted the truth.

Claire knew.

She knew something was wrong long before I did.

The video began with her sitting at our old kitchen table.

The same table where Ethan used to draw pictures while we cooked dinner.

The same table where Claire once told me she wanted three children.

Her eyes looked different.

Not because she was sick.

Because she was afraid.

“Daniel,” she said softly.

“If you’re watching this, then I’m not there to explain.””

I covered my mouth.

Hearing her voice again after all these years felt impossible.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

She looked away from the camera.

Like she was making sure nobody was nearby.

“Someone has been hiding things from you.””

My heart started beating faster.

“I don’t know how far it goes.””

She paused.

“But I know Mark is involved.””

I froze.

The man I had called my best friend.

The man who held my shoulder at Claire’s funeral.

The man who told me he would always protect my family.

Claire continued.

“Mark has been asking questions about your father’s trust.””

I leaned closer.

My father’s trust.

The same thing Rebecca mentioned.

“I confronted him.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“He denied everything.””

She looked down.

“But Daniel, people don’t get angry when they’re innocent.””

The video shook slightly.

Like Claire was holding the camera herself.

“Your father created the trust for Ethan.””

I stared at the screen.

“For Ethan?””

“Yes.””

She continued.

“Not for you. Not for me. For our son.””

My hands became cold.

“Why?””

Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because your father knew something about your family.””

She took a breath.

“He knew there were people who would do anything for that money.””

The video paused briefly.

Then Claire looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, if something happens to me, promise me something.””

I whispered:

“What?””

Even though she couldn’t hear me.

“Protect Ethan.””

The screen went black.

The video ended.

I sat there for several minutes.

Unable to move.

Then my phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered.

“Did you find something?””

My voice sounded empty.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“Daniel, your father’s trust has a condition.””

I stood.

“What condition?””

“Ethan cannot access it until he turns eighteen.””

I frowned.

“Why would Victoria need to marry me?””

Rebecca answered immediately.

“Because as your legal wife, she could potentially influence decisions involving his inheritance.””

I closed my eyes.

She wasn’t trying to create a family.

She was trying to enter one.

A family that had already suffered enough.

“I need to find Ethan.””

He was upstairs.

Drawing.

Like any normal child.

Like the world hadn’t changed.

I walked into his room.

He looked up.

“Dad?””

I sat beside him.

“I found something.””

His face became worried.

“About Victoria?””

I nodded.

Then I did something I should have done months ago.

I apologized.

Not as a father trying to fix a problem.

As a father admitting he failed.

“I should have listened to you.””

Ethan looked at me.

“You believe me now?””

The question hurt.

Because it meant he had spent months wondering.

“Yes.””

I held his hand.

“I believe you.””

For the first time in weeks, his shoulders relaxed.

Then he said:

“There’s something else.””

I felt my heart sink.

“What?””

He opened his desk drawer.

Inside was another envelope.

Different from the one Claire left.

This one was newer.

“Where did you get that?””

“Victoria’s room.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you show me before?””

“Because I didn’t know if it was important.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a document.

A hospital record.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Patient name:

Victoria Hart.

I read the date.

Then I saw the diagnosis.

My breathing changed.

Because the record wasn’t about pregnancy.

It was about something else.

Something Victoria had hidden.

A condition.

A secret.

A reason she needed the marriage more than anyone realized.

I looked at Ethan.

Then back at the document.

And I understood.

The fake baby was only one lie.

The real reason Victoria needed me…

was written on that medical file.

And if I was right, she wasn’t just trying to steal my future.

She was running out of time.
