Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Lie

I knew the name on Ethan’s phone.
That was the worst part.
Because if it had been a stranger, maybe I could have convinced myself this was a misunderstanding.
Maybe I could have believed Victoria was trapped.
Maybe I could have believed there was some explanation.
But the name staring back at me belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone who had stood beside me.
Someone who had comforted me after Claire’s death.
Someone who had told me I deserved happiness again.
“Ethan,” I whispered.
“Where did you get that?””
He looked at me.
“I found it.””
Victoria moved quickly.
Too quickly.
“Daniel, give me the phone.””
I stepped between them.
“No.””
Her face hardened.
“Give me my phone.””
“It’s not yours.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Because in that moment, nothing about Victoria felt like mine anymore.
Not my future wife.
Not the woman I thought I loved.
Not the person I trusted inside my home.
She was a stranger wearing a familiar face.
Ethan held the phone tightly.
“I recorded it because I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
That sentence broke something in me.
“You thought I wouldn’t believe you?””
He looked down.
“You believed her before.””
I had no answer.
Because he was right.
The ceremony was canceled.
The guests left slowly.
Some avoided looking at me.
Others whispered.
A few tried to offer sympathy.
But sympathy felt impossible to accept.
My entire life had turned into a performance.
The garden that was supposed to represent a beginning now looked like the scene of a disaster.
I sat in my empty house that night.
The wedding decorations were still everywhere.
Flowers on the table.
Unopened gifts stacked near the wall.
A bottle of champagne waiting for a celebration that would never happen.
Ethan sat across from me.
Neither of us spoke for several minutes.
Finally, I asked:
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?””
He looked at his hands.
“I tried.””
The guilt hit immediately.
“When?””
“Many times.””
I remembered.
The questions.
The warnings.
The uncomfortable silences.
I remembered every moment I ignored.
“I thought you were just having a hard time accepting her.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I closed my eyes.
Those words hurt more than anything Victoria had done.
Because my son had been carrying this alone.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Ethan took a deep breath.
“After you asked Victoria to marry you, she changed.””
“How?””
“She started asking questions.””
“What kind of questions?””
He looked at me.
“About your money.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
“She asked where you kept important documents.””
I stood up.
“What documents?””
Ethan’s voice became smaller.
“Your will.””
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
“Why would she ask about that?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did she say anything else?””
He nodded.
“She said some things should be prepared before a baby arrives.””
I walked away from the table.
The walls felt like they were closing in.
Victoria hadn’t just lied about being pregnant.
She had been planning something.
But I still didn’t know what.
Then Ethan unlocked the video.
“Watch this one.””
The screen showed my living room.
My own house.
My own camera footage.
The date was two weeks earlier.
Victoria was sitting on the couch.
Across from her was the man whose name I had seen.
My hands tightened.
Because I recognized him immediately.
Mark Lawson.
My former business partner.
My best friend.
The man who gave a speech at Claire’s funeral.
The man who hugged me and said:
“Your family needs you now.””
On the video, Mark looked nervous.
“You’re sure this will work?””
Victoria smiled.
The same smile I once thought was beautiful.
“The pregnancy is already convincing everyone.””
Mark looked toward the hallway.
“What about Ethan?””
Victoria’s expression changed.
“He’s becoming a problem.””
My breathing stopped.
Mark lowered his voice.
“Can you handle him?””
Victoria smiled.
“Children are easy to manipulate.””
I felt something inside me break.
Because she wasn’t talking about a stranger’s child.
She was talking about my son.
My little boy.
The child who still slept with the hallway light on after his mother died.
The child who hugged me every night and told me he missed Claire.
The video continued.
Mark asked:
“And Daniel?””
Victoria leaned back.
“Daniel wants to believe in love again.””
She laughed softly.
“That makes him predictable.””
I turned away.
I couldn’t watch.
But Ethan grabbed my arm.
“Dad.””
I looked at him.
His eyes were wet.
“There’s one more part.””
I didn’t want to see it.
Every instinct told me to stop.
But I needed the truth.
The video continued.
Mark placed a folder on the table.
“What about after the wedding?””
Victoria opened it.
“He’ll sign everything eventually.””
“What if he doesn’t?””
She smiled.
“Then we use the boy.””
The room went cold.
I stared at the screen.
Use the boy.
My son.
My child.
My reason for surviving.
A rage I had never felt before rose inside me.
But before I could speak, the video ended.
Ethan looked at me.
“Dad…”
I sat beside him.
“Why didn’t you tell me about this video?””
He hesitated.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of Victoria?””
He nodded.
Then he added:
“Not because of what she would do to me.””
I frowned.
“Then what?””
Ethan looked toward the front door.
And when he spoke, his voice was barely a whisper.
“Because I think she knows I have another video.””
My blood turned cold.
“What other video?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his backpack.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Something I had never seen before.
Something hidden for weeks.
He placed it on the table.
“Dad…”
His fingers shook as he pushed it toward me.
“This is what she was looking for.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
May you like
And written on the back were four words that made my heart stop.
*“The real father.””*
