Chapter 9: The Last Move
Vittorio had spent his entire life believing his family was built on loyalty.
Now he understood.
It was built on competition.
Every person fighting to be chosen.
Every person trying to prove they mattered.
His mother stood across from him.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who abandoned him.
The woman who had secretly built the enemy standing against him.
“Marcus hated me because you chose me.””
She did not deny it.
“He was supposed to inherit everything.””
Vittorio looked at his father.
“And you chose me.””
His father nodded.
“Because you were my son.””
A bitter smile crossed his mother’s face.
“And that was your mistake.””
Vittorio stared.
“You destroyed your own family because you were angry.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharp.
“I destroyed your family because your father created weakness.””
“Weakness?””
She looked around the estate.
“Love.””
The word sounded like an insult.
“Love made him hesitate. Love made him choose emotions over power.””
Vittorio understood then.
She never saw people.
Only pieces.
Only value.
“You never loved us.””
A silence.
Then:
“I loved what you could become.””
The answer hurt more than hatred.
His father stepped forward.
“Enough.””
She looked at him.
“You always were sentimental.””
“You threatened my son.””
“I protected my future.””
Vittorio looked at her.
“By destroying Lucy?””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“She was never supposed to be harmed.””
Vittorio stared.
“She was five years old.””
“I said she was not supposed to be harmed.””
The coldness of the correction made his stomach turn.
She wasn’t denying cruelty.
She was denying poor planning.
A sound came from outside.
Cars.
Multiple vehicles.
His mother smiled.
“Marcus is here.””
Vittorio looked at the door.
His father whispered:
“Leave.””
“No.””
“You don’t understand.””
Vittorio looked at him.
“I understand everything now.””
The front doors opened.
Marcus entered.
Behind him were lawyers.
Security.
And reporters.
Cameras.
Vittorio immediately understood.
This was the final move.
Not violence.
Public destruction.
Marcus looked around.
“Family reunion.””
His eyes moved to his father.
“You really couldn’t stay hidden.””
His father stared.
“You became exactly what I feared.””
Marcus smiled.
“No.””
He looked at Vittorio.
“I became what you created.””
Vittorio stepped forward.
“You tried to destroy my daughter.””
Marcus laughed.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The weakness.””
He pointed at Vittorio.
“You always choose one person over everything.””
Vittorio’s expression remained calm.
“Yes.””
Marcus smiled.
“And that’s why you lose.””
“No.””
Vittorio looked around.
“At least I know what I’m fighting for.””
Marcus’s smile faded.
His mother stepped forward.
“Enough.””
She looked at Vittorio.
“The company transfer documents are complete.””
Vittorio said nothing.
“You have two choices.””
She held up a folder.
“Sign.””
“And?””
“Walk away.””
“And if I don’t?””
Marcus answered.
“Then the world sees every piece of evidence against you.””
He handed a tablet to one of the reporters.
The screen showed the edited footage.
The breakfast room.
Vittorio hitting Marcus.
Vittorio slapping Bianca.
Nothing else.
No bowl.
No humiliation.
No beginning.
Only the ending.
Marcus smiled.
“Everyone will see what we want them to see.””
Vittorio looked at the screen.
Then he laughed.
Marcus frowned.
“What’s funny?””
“You made one mistake.””
“Which is?””
“You assumed I had no evidence.””
His mother’s face changed.
“What did you do?””
Vittorio looked at Emma, who stepped inside behind the reporters.
Everyone turned.
She held a small device.
“The entire conversation is recorded.””
Marcus froze.
Vittorio continued.
“Every confession.””
Marcus looked at Emma.
“You betrayed us.””
Emma smiled.
“No.””
She pressed a button.
The room filled with sound.
Marcus’s own voice.
*“Dead children create fewer problems.””*
Everyone froze.
The reporters looked at each other.
Marcus’s face changed.
For the first time, fear appeared.
But Vittorio was not finished.
Emma played another recording.
Bianca’s confession.
Marcus’s manipulation.
The entire plan.
Piece by piece.
The truth entered the room.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just impossible to ignore.
His mother looked at Marcus.
“You recorded us?””
Marcus turned.
“You brought cameras.””
His face became furious.
“You idiot.””
The insult was not aimed at Vittorio.
It was aimed at her.
And everyone heard it.
The woman who controlled everything had just become another piece.
Marcus realized too late.
He had spent years controlling narratives.
But he forgot one thing.
People could record.
People could remember.
People could fight back.
Police sirens sounded outside.
Marcus turned toward the windows.
Vittorio watched him.
“It’s over.””
Marcus looked back.
“No.””
His voice was calm again.
Almost.
“You think this ends with me?””
Vittorio stared.
Marcus smiled.
“Ask your father what happened the night he died.””
The room went silent.
Vittorio turned.
His father’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Guilt.
A terrible, hidden guilt.
Vittorio whispered:
“Father?””
The older man looked at him.
And Marcus smiled.
“Because the truth is…”
He stepped backward.
“Your father didn’t disappear to protect you.””
A pause.
“He disappeared because he knew what he had done.””
Vittorio looked at his father.
The man who had returned from the dead.
The man who claimed to save him.
May you like
And for the first time…
He wondered if he had been protecting the wrong person all along.
