Chapter 8: The Brother Nobody Knew

Vittorio did not speak for a long time.

The old estate remained silent around him.

The kind of silence that came after something broke.

Not a glass.

Not a door.

A person’s understanding of their own life.

“Marcus is my brother.””

His father nodded.

“Half-brother.””

Vittorio looked down at the photographs.

His mother.

A woman he remembered as elegant.

Cold.

Distant.

A woman who always seemed disappointed.

“You had another child.””

His father looked away.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before I married your mother.””

Vittorio laughed quietly.

“So my entire life has been surrounded by secrets.””

His father said nothing.

Because there was nothing to say.

Vittorio picked up the photograph.

“Why hide him?””

“Because he was dangerous.””

“Or because you didn’t want anyone to know you betrayed my mother?””

The older man accepted the accusation.

“Both.””

The answer was worse.

Vittorio walked toward the window.

He thought about Marcus.

Every conversation.

Every smile.

Every time he had called him family.

Not blood family.

But close enough.

“I trusted him.””

His father’s voice softened.

“That was his greatest weapon.””

Vittorio turned.

“Tell me everything.””

His father sat down.

And for the first time in years, Vittorio saw something he never expected.

Regret.

“Your mother wanted control.””

“Of what?””

“Everything.””

The older man looked at the photographs.

“She believed the Romano name belonged to her.””

“She built Marcus to take it?””

“Yes.””

Vittorio’s jaw tightened.

“She used her own son.””

“She used everyone.””

His father opened another file.

Inside were financial records.

“Marcus spent years creating connections. Lawyers. Investors. Politicians.””

“And Bianca?””

“A useful piece.””

Vittorio looked at him.

“Bianca was never the mastermind.””

“No.””

His father shook his head.

“She was desperate for approval. Marcus knew exactly how to manipulate her.””

Vittorio thought about the breakfast room.

The cruelty.

The fear.

The confession.

For the first time, Bianca’s actions had a shape.

Still unforgivable.

But no longer random.

“What about Lucy?””

His father’s expression changed.

“Lucy was the reason everything accelerated.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena discovered the truth.””

Vittorio looked up.

“Elena knew Marcus was planning to take the company.””

“Yes.””

“She tried to expose him.””

“Yes.””

“And Lucy?””

“Lucy was evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

His father looked at him.

“That Marcus was willing to destroy anyone.””

Vittorio felt anger rise.

“He tried to erase his own niece.””

“Yes.””

The older man leaned forward.

“And when Elena refused to disappear, he created another plan.””

“The custody case.””

“Exactly.””

Vittorio closed his eyes.

Marcus had not just wanted his company.

He wanted control over every person connected to the truth.

His phone rang.

Emma.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?””

Her voice sounded urgent.

“Vittorio, we found something.””

“What?””

“Marcus isn’t attacking your company.””

A pause.

“He already owns part of it.””

Vittorio looked at his father.

“How?””

“Through silent investors.””

Emma continued.

“Years ago, someone created shell companies that bought shares without revealing the owner.””

“Who?””

“I’m tracing it.””

A pause.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

“Someone accessed your personal accounts.””

Vittorio frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“Not if they have family authorization.””

His father’s face changed.

Vittorio noticed.

“What?””

The older man looked at the phone.

“Who is it?””

Emma answered.

“Your mother.””

The call ended.

Vittorio slowly lowered the phone.

His father stood.

“She’s alive.””

Vittorio looked at him.

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

His voice became colder.

“You knew she was alive and you never told me?””

His father looked broken.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

Vittorio stepped closer.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

His father accepted it.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Both men froze.

Vittorio looked toward the staircase.

“You said we were alone.””

His father’s face changed.

“We were.””

Footsteps descended.

Slow.

Confident.

A woman appeared.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

Vittorio had seen her face thousands of times.

In photographs.

In memories.

In dreams.

His mother.

Alive.

She smiled.

“Hello, Vittorio.””

He stared.

No tears.

No shock.

Only rage.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe you were dead.””

She walked closer.

“I did what I had to do.””

Vittorio laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

Her eyes moved toward his father.

“You told him.””

His father stood between them.

“He deserved the truth.””

She smiled.

“That’s where you always failed.””

Vittorio looked at her.

“What?””

“You believed truth was something people deserved.””

She touched the old desk.

“Truth is something people survive.””

Vittorio stared at the woman who had given him life.

And destroyed it.

“Where is Marcus?””

Her smile disappeared slightly.

A tiny crack.

But he saw it.

“He’s coming.””

“For what?””

She looked at him.

“To finish what we started.””

Vittorio’s voice lowered.

“What started?””

May you like

She answered:

“The day your father chose you instead of him.””
