Chapter 2: The War Behind the Smile
The mansion had never felt so quiet.
Not peaceful.
Quiet like a hospital hallway after midnight.
Vittorio stood in his council room staring at the papers spread across his desk.
Custody complaint.
Emergency petition.
Character allegations.
Photographs.
Statements.
Every page was designed to create a story.
And the story was simple.
Vittorio Romano was dangerous.
Unstable.
A wealthy man who used anger instead of reason.
A father who could not be trusted.
The truth was buried beneath carefully arranged lies.
Emma stood near the door holding Lucy’s hand.
“She planned this,” Emma said.
Vittorio did not look away from the documents.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
He finally looked at her.
That question had been haunting him since the phone call.
How long had his wife been preparing to take his daughter away?
Emma lowered her voice.
“I don’t know.””
Lucy sat on the couch nearby, wrapped in a blanket.
She had stopped crying.
That frightened Vittorio more than tears.
Children cried when they were hurt.
When they became silent, it meant they were learning to hide pain.
He walked over and sat beside her.
“Lucy.””
She looked at him.
“Yes, Daddy?””
“Did Bianca ever make you do this before?””
Lucy hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Vittorio felt his stomach tighten.
“Lucy.””
She looked down at her fingers.
“Only when you weren’t home.””
Emma covered her mouth.
Vittorio forced himself to breathe.
“What else?””
The little girl looked toward the floor.
“She said you would be angry if I told you.””
“Why?””
“She said grown-up problems make families break.””
Vittorio closed his eyes.
For years, he had believed Bianca was cold.
Demanding.
Obsessed with appearances.
He never imagined she could weaponize his own daughter’s fear.
A knock came at the door.
Everyone turned.
A house employee stood outside.
“Mr. Romano, there are reporters at the front gate.””
Emma frowned.
“Already?””
Vittorio looked at the clock.
The custody filing had been delivered less than an hour ago.
That meant someone had prepared the media before the accusation was even public.
This was not an emotional decision.
It was an operation.
He walked to the window.
Outside the gates, cameras flashed.
Reporters shouted his name.
“Mr. Romano! Did you assault your wife?””
“Are you losing custody of your daughter?””
“Is it true you have anger problems?””
Lucy covered her ears.
Vittorio immediately closed the curtains.
But it was too late.
The damage had started.
A voice came from behind him.
“You should have thought about consequences before hitting people.””
Bianca stood in the doorway.
Her cheek was slightly red.
But her confidence had returned.
She was no longer the frightened woman from the breakfast room.
She was prepared.
“You’re leaving this house,” Vittorio said.
She smiled.
“I don’t think so.””
“Why?””
“Because legally, this is still my home.””
He stared at her.
She stepped closer.
“You built an empire, Vittorio. You bought buildings, companies, influence.””
She looked around the room.
“But you forgot something.””
“What?””
“People believe what they see.””
She tapped the papers.
“And tomorrow, they won’t see a father protecting his daughter.””
She smiled faintly.
“They’ll see a powerful man attacking his wife.””
Vittorio’s hands tightened.
“You recorded nothing about Lucy.””
“No.””
“Because you know what happened.””
Bianca tilted her head.
“I know exactly what happened.””
She walked toward the door.
“And that’s why I know you’re going to lose.””
After she left, Emma whispered, “She’s confident because she has something else.””
Vittorio looked at her.
“You think Marcus is involved.””
Emma nodded.
“He didn’t look surprised when the attorney called.””
That was true.
Marcus had not looked shocked.
He looked victorious.
Vittorio went back through the video.
He watched Marcus again.
The hallway door.
The timing.
The way he checked his watch.
Then he noticed something.
“Stop.””
Emma froze.
Vittorio pointed at the screen.
“Zoom in.””
Emma enlarged the image.
Marcus had been standing near the hallway before closing the door.
His hand was inside his jacket.
Not his pocket.
Inside the lining.
“He planted something,” Vittorio said.
Emma stared.
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
They watched the video frame by frame.
Then they saw it.
A small black device.
Marcus had placed it near the council room entrance.
A recording device.
Vittorio felt the blood drain from his face.
“He wasn’t hiding Lucy’s screams from me.””
Emma looked confused.
“Then why?””
Vittorio stared at the screen.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The bowl.
The humiliation.
The open door.
The recording.
Marcus had wanted Vittorio to react.
He wanted anger.
He wanted violence.
He wanted the one moment where Vittorio would lose control.
Emma whispered, “They wanted you to hit them.””
Vittorio said nothing.
Because she was right.
The entire breakfast scene had been a trap.
And he had stepped directly into it.
A notification appeared on Emma’s phone.
She looked down.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
She turned the screen toward him.
A news alert.
The headline had already been published.
*ROMANO FAMILY COLLAPSE: BUSINESS TYCOON ACCUSED OF ATTACKING WIFE AFTER DOMESTIC INCIDENT.*
Below it was a photo.
Not from the breakfast room.
From inside the mansion.
A picture of Vittorio standing over Bianca.
Taken from the perfect angle.
The angle of someone who wanted him to look guilty.
Lucy saw the screen.
“Daddy…”
He immediately took the phone away.
But she had seen enough.
That night, Vittorio sat beside her bed until she fell asleep.
He watched her breathing.
He remembered the first time he held her.
The tiny fingers wrapped around his.
The promise he made.
Never let anyone hurt you.
A promise he had failed to keep.
At 3:17 in the morning, his own phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
*You should have accepted the divorce quietly.*
Then another message arrived.
A photograph.
Vittorio opened it.
His face went cold.
It was a picture of Marcus and Bianca together.
Not recently.
Years earlier.
Before Bianca married him.
Before Lucy was born.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.
Three words.
*Ask about Elena.*
Vittorio stared at the name.
Elena.
A name he had not heard in eleven years.
A name that should have been impossible.
Because Elena Hale had died before Lucy was born.
His phone rang immediately.
The caller ID was hidden.
He answered.
“Who is this?””
Silence.
Then a woman’s voice whispered.
“Vittorio…”
He stood up.
Because he knew that voice.
Impossible.
But he knew it.
May you like
The woman spoke again.
“You need to find out what Marcus did to my daughter.””
