Chapter 5: The Mother in the Shadows
Vittorio did not move.
The church suddenly felt too small.
Too quiet.
Marcus stood near the entrance with the confidence of a man who believed he had already won.
Elena stood across from him.
A woman who had been erased from every record.
A woman who was supposed to be dead.
A woman claiming his entire life had been built on a lie.
Vittorio looked between them.
“Explain.””
Marcus smiled.
“You still think this is a conversation.””
Vittorio took one step forward.
“No.””
His voice dropped.
“This is the moment where you explain why you destroyed my family.””
For the first time, Marcus’s smile disappeared.
Elena moved closer.
“Because he never cared about Lucy.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You’re still protecting him?””
“I’m protecting my daughter.””
“She’s not yours anymore.””
Elena flinched.
Vittorio noticed.
That one sentence.
Not an insult.
A weapon.
Marcus knew exactly where to hurt people.
Vittorio turned toward Elena.
“Tell me everything.””
She looked down.
“I was twenty-three when I met Marcus.””
“Your brother.””
She nodded.
“He was charming. Intelligent. Everyone loved him.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“I didn’t know he was already planning how to use me.””
Vittorio listened.
“He worked for your company.””
That surprised him.
Marcus had never mentioned it.
“He learned everything about your family,” Elena continued.
“Your habits. Your weaknesses. Your enemies.””
She looked at Vittorio.
“Then he learned about you.””
“Me?””
“He wanted your trust.””
Vittorio’s expression hardened.
“Why?””
“Because your father had something Marcus wanted.””
“What?””
Elena looked at Marcus.
“A secret account.””
Marcus laughed.
“Still telling old stories?””
Elena ignored him.
“Your father kept evidence against powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Criminal organizations.””
Vittorio remembered.
Years ago, his father had warned him.
Never trust a man who wants your name more than your friendship.
“He believed Marcus was dangerous,” Elena said.
Vittorio looked at Marcus.
“And you killed him.””
Marcus smiled.
“No.””
A pause.
“I simply allowed him to die.””
The words hung in the air.
Vittorio’s hands tightened.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Marcus shrugged.
“Believe whatever you want.””
Elena stepped forward.
“You see? That’s what he does.””
She pointed at Marcus.
“He never admits guilt. He only admits enough truth to make you question yourself.””
Marcus laughed softly.
“You always were emotional.””
“And you always were a monster.””
The word changed something.
Marcus’s face became colder.
Not angry.
Cold.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Elena stared at him.
“I spent five years watching another woman raise my daughter.””
Her voice broke.
“Do you understand what that feels like?””
Vittorio looked away.
Because he did not.
He could not.
Marcus looked at Vittorio.
“Ask her why she disappeared.””
Elena went silent.
Vittorio noticed.
“Why?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because Marcus threatened Lucy.””
The answer came quietly.
“He told me if I came back, he would make sure you never knew the truth.””
Vittorio stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“The night Lucy was born.””
A memory flashed.
That night.
The hospital.
The storm.
The woman who had approached him in the hallway.
He remembered.
A nurse had told him someone was waiting outside.
But Bianca had appeared first.
She had said:
“She’s exhausted. Let her rest.””
Vittorio felt sick.
“Bianca knew.””
Elena nodded.
“She helped him.””
A voice came from the back.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Bianca stood inside the church.
Vittorio’s face changed.
“What are you doing here?””
Bianca looked at Elena.
“I came to fix what I broke.””
Marcus laughed.
“This is pathetic.””
Bianca ignored him.
“I was afraid.””
Vittorio stared at her.
“You let me raise another woman’s daughter.””
“I loved her.””
“She wasn’t yours.””
Bianca’s eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
She looked toward Elena.
“She was ours.””
Nobody spoke.
Bianca stepped closer.
“Do you know what Marcus did after Elena disappeared?””
Vittorio said nothing.
“He told me Lucy needed protection.””
She laughed bitterly.
“I was stupid enough to believe him.””
Marcus interrupted.
“You were weak.””
Bianca looked at him.
“I was scared.””
“And that made you useful.””
The words destroyed something in her face.
Vittorio saw it.
For the first time, Bianca understood she had never been a partner.
She had been a tool.
Marcus checked his watch.
“We’re wasting time.””
Vittorio looked at him.
“What do you want?””
Marcus smiled.
“Finally.””
He walked toward the center aisle.
“The right question.””
He pulled a folder from his coat.
“I don’t want your money.””
“Then what?””
“Your company.””
Vittorio laughed.
“You built an entire fake custody case for my company?””
Marcus opened the folder.
“Not fake.””
He handed it over.
Inside were shareholder documents.
Transfer agreements.
Signatures.
Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.
Some of the signatures were his.
But he had never signed them.
Marcus watched his reaction.
“You’ve been fighting your own company while I’ve been preparing to take it.””
Vittorio looked up.
“How?””
Marcus smiled.
“Because Bianca gave me access.””
Bianca went pale.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You really thought I would protect you after everything?””
Vittorio turned toward Bianca.
“You helped him.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
“You gave him my documents.””
“I thought he was helping us.””
Marcus laughed.
“That’s the funniest part.””
He stepped back.
“She always believed she was the smartest person in the room.””
Vittorio looked at Marcus.
“And Lucy?””
Marcus’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“She was never part of the plan.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Because you didn’t expect her to survive.””
Silence.
Vittorio looked at Marcus.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus said nothing.
Elena’s voice trembled.
“He tried to make it look like Lucy died.””
The world stopped.
Vittorio stared.
“Why?””
Marcus finally looked at him.
“Because dead children create fewer problems.””
Vittorio moved.
Fast.
But before he reached him, the church doors opened.
Two men entered.
Armed security.
Not police.
Marcus smiled.
“You should have brought more people.””
Vittorio stopped.
Marcus walked backward.
“You spent your entire life protecting your empire.””
He looked at Lucy’s father.
“But you never protected the one thing that mattered.””
Marcus reached the door.
“Tomorrow, the world will know the truth.””
Vittorio’s voice was ice.
“What truth?””
Marcus smiled.
“That Lucy Romano was never legally yours.””
Then he disappeared.

Leaving behind one final document.
A DNA report.
