Chapter 8: What My Father Confessed
Daniel killed the lights.
Sarah pulled Emma behind the bed.
Mason crouched beside her.
I stood by the window, watching Vanessa cross the parking lot.
She wasn't running.
She wasn't afraid.
She walked like someone who knew exactly how the night would end.
“There's a back exit,” Daniel whispered.
Sarah shook her head.
“They'll have someone there.””
“How do you know?””
“Because Victor always does.””
I looked at Sarah.
“You've been running from them for six years.””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me how we stop them.””
She looked at me.
“We expose them.””
Daniel glanced at the laptop.
“The video.””
“Can you repair it?””
“Not here.””
“Then we're moving.””
A knock sounded.
Vanessa's voice came through the door.
“Michael.””
Nobody answered.
“I know you're in there.””
I looked at Sarah.
Vanessa continued.
“You have something that belongs to me.””
I stepped toward the door.
“You mean my daughter?””
Silence.
Then Vanessa laughed.
“No.””
Her voice became cold.
“I mean the evidence.””
Sarah whispered, “Don't.””
But I opened the door.
Vanessa stood outside alone.
She looked at me.
No anger.
No tears.
Just calculation.
“You look tired.””
“You abused my daughter.””
“I disciplined her.””
“You locked her in a closet.””
“She was never in danger.””
I stared at her.
“You hit Mason.””
“He interfered.””
“You lied about Sarah.””
Vanessa's eyes shifted.
“You wouldn't understand.””
“I understand enough.””
She looked behind me.
“Where is she?””
I said nothing.
Vanessa smiled.
“Michael, you have always been predictable.””
I stepped outside.
She glanced toward the motel room.
“You were always going to choose them.””
“Who?””
“Sarah.””
She sighed.
“You know what the saddest part is?””
“I don't care.””
“You think she loves you.””
“I know she does.””
“She left you.””
“You drugged me.””
“You don't know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa stared at me.
For the first time, something like fear appeared in her eyes.
“Your father ordered it.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Your father wanted Sarah gone.””
“You helped him.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was trying to save my family.””
“By destroying mine?””
She looked away.
“Victor promised my brother protection.””
“From what?””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“You're asking the wrong questions.””
“Then answer the right ones.””
I stepped closer.
“Who is Emma's biological father?””
Vanessa laughed.
“You.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“You always were.””
My heart hammered.
“Then why change her name?””
“Because she was the last piece of Sarah you couldn't be separated from.””
“You tried to take her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Sarah had something you needed.””
“The account.””
Vanessa nodded.
“The original ledger.””
I understood.
“The thing Sarah hid.””
“Yes.””
“Where is it?””
Vanessa smiled.
“You're standing on it.””
I glanced down.
The motel floor.
“What?””
She suddenly stepped backward.
Daniel shouted from inside.
“Michael!””
A gunshot cracked.
The motel window exploded.
I hit the ground.
Sarah screamed.
“Emma!””
Daniel tackled Mason behind the bed.
Another shot struck the wall.
Vanessa ran.
I chased her.
“Vanessa!””
She sprinted toward the parking lot.
A man stepped out from behind a car.
I stopped.
Victor.
He held a gun.
“Don't.””
I froze.
Victor looked at Vanessa.
“You were supposed to bring him.””
“I tried.””
Victor's eyes narrowed.
“You failed.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
Then something unbelievable happened.
She turned and ran.
Victor raised his gun.
I moved without thinking.
“Vanessa!””
The shot missed her.
She disappeared behind a building.
Victor turned toward me.
“You've made this difficult.””
“You killed my father.””
“No.””
He lowered the gun slightly.
“Your father killed himself.””
“Liar.””
“He couldn't live with what he'd done.””
“What did he do?””
Victor smiled.
“Ask Sarah.””
Then he ran.
I followed.
But Daniel grabbed me.
“Let him go.””
“Why?””
“Because we have the confession.””
I turned.
Daniel held up the laptop.
The video was playing.
My father's face filled the screen.
“I used Michael's identity to hide the accounts,” he said.
“I told myself it was temporary.””
My father's voice shook.
“But when Sarah discovered the truth, I became afraid.””
Sarah stood behind Daniel.
She was crying.
The recording continued.
“I hired Victor to intimidate her.””
My stomach twisted.
“I never ordered her death.””
My father looked down.
“But Victor went further than I knew.””
He took a breath.
“Vanessa was involved.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
My father continued.
“Vanessa and Thomas were responsible for the attack on Michael.””
The screen flickered.
Then returned.
“I need Michael to know one thing.””
My father's eyes looked directly into the camera.
“Your mother didn't die of natural causes.””
I stopped breathing.
My father whispered:
“Victor killed her too.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Sarah looked at me.
“There was one more thing.””
“What?””
“Your father told me where he hid the original ledger.””
“Where?””
Sarah looked down.
“Under the floor of the old house.””
“My childhood house?””
She nodded.
“The house your father sold after you left.””
I remembered the place.
The basement.
The old workshop.
A wooden floor beneath the workbench.
Sarah stepped closer.
“Michael, we need to get there before Victor.””
I looked toward the parking lot.
Vanessa was gone.
So was Victor.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
His face went pale.
“What?””
He listened.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Police.””
“What happened?””
“They found Vanessa's car.””
“Where?””
“Three miles from here.””
“Is she alive?””
Daniel's silence answered before his words did.
“No.””
Sarah grabbed the phone.
“Who killed her?””
Daniel listened.
Then whispered:
“They found her with a note.””
“What note?”” I asked.
May you like
He looked at me.
“It says, ‘Michael Carter did this.’”
