Chapter 2: The Locked Door
I didn't tell Vanessa about the phone call.
Not yet.
I sat with Lily and Mason on the living-room floor while Vanessa dragged a suitcase down the stairs.
She looked different now.
The confident woman who had slapped my daughter was gone.
In her place was someone pale and frantic, constantly checking her phone.
She stopped beside the front door.
“You're really doing this?””
I stood.
“Yes.””
“After everything I've done for you?””
I almost laughed.
“What exactly have you done for me?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“I took care of this house.””
“You locked my daughter in a closet.””
“I said I was sorry.””
“No. You said she deserved it.””
Vanessa looked toward Lily.
“She's manipulative.””
Lily immediately pressed herself against my leg.
Mason stepped in front of her.
“Don't talk about her like that.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You're taking his side now?””
Mason's voice shook.
“I'm taking Lily's side.””
That silenced everyone.
I opened the front door.
“Go.””
Vanessa grabbed the handle.
Then she stopped.
“Michael, if you send me away, you're going to regret it.””
I looked at her.
“I already regret something.””
“What?””
“Trusting you.””
She walked out.
Mason moved toward the door.
“Mom?””
Vanessa turned.
For a second, I thought he might run to her.
Instead, he stayed beside me.
“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
Vanessa's face hardened.
“You'll come crawling back.””
Then she left.
The door closed.
I locked it.
Only after the click of the deadbolt did Lily finally breathe.
I carried her upstairs.
Her bedroom looked normal.
Pink curtains.
Stuffed animals.
A little night-light shaped like a moon.
I opened the closet.
My stomach turned.
There were scratch marks on the inside of the door.
Tiny ones.
At child height.
I ran my fingers over them.
Lily stood behind me.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
“Did you make these?””
She nodded.
“Why?””
“I wanted the door to open.””
I closed my eyes.
“How long did she leave you in here?””
Lily held up five fingers.
“Five hours?””
She shook her head.
“Five?””
She nodded.
“Sometimes longer.””
I felt something hot rise in my chest.
“Who let you out?””
“Mason.””
I looked down the hallway.
Mason was standing there.
“Tell me what happened.””
He hesitated.
Then came inside.
“Mom told Lily to stay in there.””
“Why?””
“Because she cried.””
“Why was she crying?””
“Because she was hungry.””
He looked at the floor.
“She cried for you.””
My throat tightened.
“What did you do?””
“I waited until Mom went downstairs. Then I opened the door.””
“Didn't she catch you?””
“Sometimes.””
“And?””
He touched his upper arm.
“She hit me.””
I pulled him into my arms.
He held on.
I wanted to tell him he should have come to me.
But he was seven.
A seven-year-old shouldn't have been responsible for protecting another child.
My phone buzzed.
A text from my boss.
*Call me now. It's serious.*
I stepped into the hallway and called.
“What's going on?””
“Where is Vanessa?””
“Gone.””
“Good.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“You remember the storage container you used at the south site?””
“Yeah.””
“The police searched it after the accident.””
“Why?””
“Because the foreman said someone had been using it after hours.””
I leaned against the wall.
“Using it for what?””
“Documents. Boxes. There's a whole stack of them.””
“What kind of documents?””
My boss lowered his voice.
“Bank statements.””
My heart skipped.
“For who?””
“Your name is on several.””
I stared at the ceiling.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“That's what I thought.””
“Did you look at them?””
“Yes.””
“What did they show?””
A pause.
“Payments.””
“To who?””
“Vanessa.””
My stomach dropped.
“How much?””
“Michael, I don't know how to say this.””
“Just tell me.””
“Over forty thousand dollars.””
I couldn't speak.
My paycheck wasn't even close to that.
“Where did she get it?””
“We don't know.””
“Are you sure the accounts are mine?””
“That's the problem.””
He took a breath.
“They're not your normal bank accounts.””
I felt cold.
“What do you mean?””
“The documents show a second account opened under your name.””
I walked into the kitchen.
My hands were shaking.
“Someone opened a bank account in my name?””
“That’s what it looks like.””
I stared at the pantry.
The padlock was still there.
I suddenly noticed something else.
A small envelope tucked behind a stack of cereal boxes.
I pulled it out.
My name was printed on the front.
*MICHAEL CARTER — CONFIDENTIAL*
I opened it.
Inside was a bank statement.
My name.
My address.
My Social Security number.
And a balance of $18,742.
I had never seen the account.
At the bottom was a list of transfers.
Every month.
Exactly three days after my paycheck arrived.
Money had been moving from somewhere into this account.
Then disappearing.
I heard footsteps.
Mason stood in the doorway.
“Dad?””
I quickly folded the statement.
“Go sit with Lily.””
“What's wrong?””
“Nothing you need to worry about.””
He stared at me.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Mom has another phone.””
I slowly looked up.
“What?””
“She keeps it in her bedroom.””
“What kind of phone?””
“Black. She hides it when you're home.””
“What does she use it for?””
“I don't know.””
He hesitated.
“But sometimes she talks to a man.””
My heart began pounding.
“Did you hear his name?””
Mason nodded.
“Once.””
“What was it?””
He looked toward the stairs.
“Daniel.””
I knew that name.
I had seen it before.
Not in Vanessa's contacts.
Not at work.
On a bank statement.
Daniel Reeves.
A man I'd never met.
I went upstairs.
Vanessa's bedroom was empty.
Her suitcase was gone.
The window was open.
She had left through the backyard.
I searched the room.
Closets.
Drawers.
Nightstand.
Nothing.
Then I saw the mattress.
One corner wasn't sitting flat.
I lifted it.
A black phone was taped underneath.
I pulled it free.
The screen lit up.
One new message.
*Daniel: She knows about the account. Get out tonight.*
I stared at the words.
Then another message appeared.
*Daniel: And Michael cannot find out what happened to the first wife.*
My blood froze.
First wife?
I scrolled upward.
The conversation went back months.
Then years.
There were photographs.
Bank transfers.
Copies of documents.
And one message from Vanessa dated six months earlier.
*Vanessa: Once he starts working nights, everything will be easy.*
I heard the floor creak behind me.
I spun around.
Mason was standing in the doorway.
He looked at the phone.
Then at me.
“Dad…”
“What?””
His face went pale.
“I know Daniel.””
I lowered the phone.
“How?””
Mason swallowed.
“He came here before.””
“When?””
“Before you married Mom.””
I stared at him.
“That can't be true.””
“He was here with my mom.””
“Vanessa?””
Mason shook his head.
“No.””
May you like
His eyes filled with tears.
“My real mom.””
