Chapter 4: The Woman on the Phone

The line was dead.

Daniel stood on my porch with the phone pressed against his ear, staring at the screen as if he could force it to ring again.

I couldn't take my eyes off the birth record.

*Mother: Sarah Reeves.*

My daughter wasn't Vanessa's.

She wasn't even the child I thought she was.

Lily was Sarah's daughter.

My daughter.

And somehow, the woman I'd buried in my mind for six years was alive.

“Call her back,” I said.

Daniel didn't move.

“Daniel.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“She blocked the number.””

“Then use another phone.””

“I've tried.””

“How many?””

“Every number I have.””

I stepped onto the porch.

“Who was she hiding from?””

Daniel finally looked at me.

“Everyone.””

“What happened six years ago?””

He glanced toward the house.

“Not here.””

I almost snapped at him.

But then I saw a dark SUV parked across the street.

Its engine was running.

My stomach tightened.

“Who owns that?””

Daniel looked over.

The SUV rolled forward immediately.

“Get inside.””

I grabbed Lily from the stairs and pulled Mason behind me.

“Daniel!””

He rushed through the doorway.

“Lock it.””

I slammed the deadbolt.

The SUV stopped at the corner.

Nobody got out.

Daniel looked through the blinds.

“Do you recognize it?””

“No.””

He watched it for another ten seconds.

“Then we have a problem.””

Mason whispered, “Is it Mom?””

Daniel turned.

“No.””

Mason's face remained pale.

“She always watches from across the street.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Mason swallowed.

“Sometimes when Dad is at work, Mom tells me to look outside.””

Daniel crouched beside him.

“Did you see this SUV before?””

Mason nodded.

“Twice.””

“When?””

“Last month. And last week.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Vanessa hadn't just been abusing Lily.

She'd been watching the house.

Planning.

Maybe for years.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Nothing.

Then breathing.

Slow.

Controlled.

I knew immediately it wasn't a wrong number.

“Who is this?””

A man's voice said, “You shouldn't have opened that door.””

The call ended.

Daniel's eyes met mine.

“Give me the phone.””

I handed it over.

He examined the number.

“Burner.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I've used enough of them.””

I stared at him.

“You worked for Vanessa.””

“I did.””

“To spy on me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because she paid me to find out whether you remembered Sarah.””

“I didn't even know Sarah was alive.””

“That was the point.””

I took a step toward him.

“Start talking.””

He nodded.

“Six years ago, you were married to Sarah. You had Lily. You were happy.””

I shook my head.

“I would remember my wife.””

“You don't.””

“Why?””

“Because you were told she died.””

“By Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“Who else?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

My father's name felt heavier than the others.

He'd been dead for four years.

“What did my father have to do with Sarah?””

Daniel rubbed his hands over his face.

“He knew about the money.””

“What money?””

“The money being moved through your accounts.””

I looked at the statement again.

“Mine?””

“Your identity was being used.””

“By Vanessa?””

“By people behind her.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“I don't know how high it goes.””

I slammed the statement onto the kitchen counter.

“I need answers.””

“You're going to get them.””

“Now.””

Daniel pulled a small flash drive from his pocket.

“I have something Sarah gave me.””

“What is it?””

“Videos.””

“Of what?””

“Vanessa.””

I stared at him.

“Doing what?””

“Meeting the man who arranged your first wife's disappearance.””

My hands went cold.

“Why didn't you give me this before?””

“Because I didn't know whether you were part of it.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You thought I was involved?””

“I thought everyone was.””

He connected the drive to my laptop.

A folder appeared.

*SARAH — DO NOT OPEN UNLESS MICHAEL KNOWS.*

I clicked it.

The first video showed a parking garage.

Vanessa walked into frame.

She was younger.

Maybe six years ago.

She looked around before entering a black sedan.

A man was already inside.

I froze.

I knew him.

Not personally.

But I'd seen his photograph.

It was on an old construction permit at my company.

“That's Victor Hale,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“You know him?””

“He owns the development company.””

Daniel nodded.

“He owns more than that.””

The video continued.

Victor handed Vanessa an envelope.

She opened it.

“What about Michael?”” Vanessa asked.

Victor replied, “He doesn't remember anything.””

“He will.””

“Not if you follow the plan.””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“And Sarah?””

Victor leaned toward her.

“Sarah is the problem.””

My breathing stopped.

The video ended.

The next file began.

This one was inside a hospital.

Sarah sat in a wheelchair.

Her face was bruised.

Her left arm was in a cast.

A nurse adjusted her blanket.

Then Sarah looked directly into the camera.

“If Michael sees this,” she whispered, “tell him I didn't leave him.””

I couldn't blink.

“I never abandoned him.””

She touched her stomach.

“And Lily wasn't an accident.””

Daniel paused the video.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“I don't know.””

“Play it.””

He did.

Sarah continued.

“Vanessa knows about the account. Victor knows about the account. But neither of them knows where I hid the original.””

A door opened behind her.

Sarah turned.

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

“What original?””

Daniel shook his head.

“She never told me.””

“Then why did you keep this?””

“Because she told me to wait.””

“For what?””

“For you.””

My phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed a name.

*Vanessa.*

I answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was strangely calm.

“Michael, I need you to listen.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You abused Lily.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You erased my marriage.””

Silence.

Then:

“You don't understand what Sarah did.””

“What did she do?””

“She betrayed us.””

“Who is us?””

“Your family.””

I laughed.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

“Sarah was my wife.””

“She was dangerous.””

“You told me she died.””

“I had to.””

“Why?””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“Because if you remembered her, they would kill you too.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at me.

“Who are they?”” I demanded.

Vanessa whispered:

“Your father.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“My father is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then stop lying.””

“I wish I could.””

There was a long pause.

Then she said:

“Michael, listen to me. The man who killed your father is coming for you.””

The call ended.

I stood completely still.

Daniel slowly reached for the phone.

“What did she say?””

I told him.

He looked toward the windows.

Then toward Lily and Mason.

“She's telling the truth about one thing.””

“What?””

“The man who killed your father…”

He swallowed.

“…is Victor Hale.””

Before I could respond, headlights swept across the living-room wall.

The SUV was moving again.

This time it stopped directly outside my house.

A door opened.

Then another.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Take the kids upstairs.””

“Why?””

May you like

He looked through the blinds.

“Because they're not here to talk.””
