Chapter 7: The Woman I Buried
My hand stopped inches from the lock.
Behind the door stood the woman whose voice had lived inside an old voicemail for six years.
Sarah.
My first wife.
Emma's mother.
Alive.
I looked at Daniel.
He shook his head once.
Not yet.
I understood.
We couldn't know whether the woman outside was really Sarah.
I leaned toward the door.
“Who told you where we were?””
Silence.
Then the woman answered.
“Daniel did.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“I didn't.””
The woman outside went quiet.
I whispered, “What's the last thing you said to me before I lost my memory?””
Nothing.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Then her voice came through the door.
“You told me to take Emma and run.””
My knees nearly gave out.
Daniel stared at me.
“That's not enough,” he whispered.
I nodded.
“Sarah, what did I call you when we were alone?””
A pause.
Then she laughed softly.
It was a broken little laugh.
“You called me Sparrow.””
I closed my eyes.
I remembered.
Not everything.
Just one image.
A summer evening.
Sarah sitting barefoot on the back porch.
Her hair tied up.
A glass of lemonade in her hand.
I had kissed her shoulder.
“Come here, Sparrow.””
She had laughed.
The memory vanished as quickly as it came.
I unlocked the door.
Sarah stepped inside.
She was thinner than I remembered.
Much thinner.
Her dark hair had streaks of gray.
A scar ran from beneath her left ear down toward her collarbone.
Her eyes were exactly the same.
Brown.
Tired.
Terrified.
She looked at me.
For one long second, neither of us moved.
Then she whispered:
“Michael.””
I couldn't answer.
She took one step closer.
I stepped back.
Her face crumpled.
“I know.””
“What?””
“You don't remember me.””
“I remember pieces.””
“That may be worse.””
She looked past me.
Then she saw Emma.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
“Baby…”
Emma woke fully.
Her eyes widened.
“Mommy?””
Sarah dropped to her knees.
Emma ran into her arms.
The sound Sarah made nearly destroyed me.
She held Emma like she'd been starving for the weight of her.
“My baby.””
Emma buried her face in Sarah's neck.
“I missed you.””
“I missed you every day.””
“You said you were dead.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“I thought you didn't love me.””
Sarah pulled back.
“Never.””
Her hands framed Emma's face.
“Never, never, never.””
Mason stood near the bed.
Sarah noticed him.
Her expression softened.
“And you must be Mason.””
He nodded.
“Are you really Lily's mom?””
Sarah looked at him.
“I'm Emma's mom.””
Mason glanced at me.
“Dad said Lily was her name.””
Sarah's eyes moved toward me.
“That's the name Vanessa gave her.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Why?””
“Because she wanted to erase me.””
Sarah stood.
“She wanted to erase everything that connected you to me.””
“Then why did she keep Emma?””
“Because Emma was leverage.””
“For what?””
“For you.””
Sarah walked to the small table.
She looked at the birth record.
“They changed her name after the accident.””
“What accident?””
Sarah's eyes met mine.
“The night they took you.””
I sat down.
“Tell me.””
Sarah remained standing.
“I found the financial accounts your father created.””
“I know.””
“No, Michael. You don't know the worst part.””
She reached into her coat and pulled out a folded photograph.
She placed it on the table.
It showed my father.
Victor Hale.
Vanessa.
And a fourth man.
I stared at him.
I knew him.
Thomas.
Vanessa's brother.
But the photograph was dated seven years ago.
Before I'd ever met Vanessa.
“Why were they together?””
“Because Vanessa worked for your father.””
I looked at Sarah.
“You knew her?””
“She approached me first.””
“Why?””
“To convince me to give her the documents.””
“And when you refused?””
“She threatened Emma.””
Sarah's voice broke.
“I took Emma and ran.””
“What about me?””
“You came after us.””
I rubbed my temples.
Another memory flashed.
Rain.
Headlights.
Sarah screaming.
A man's fist.
Then a needle.
I gasped.
Sarah rushed toward me.
“Michael?””
“Someone injected me.””
She nodded.
“Thomas.””
“Why?””
“Because you had already found the second account.””
I looked at Daniel.
“The account with the forty thousand?””
Sarah shook her head.
“That was only the bait.””
“What?””
“The real account contains millions.””
The room fell silent.
Mason whispered, “Millions?””
Sarah nodded.
“Your father had been laundering money for years. When he realized I had discovered it, he planned to frame Michael.””
“For what?””
“Fraud.””
I stood.
“And Vanessa?””
“She was supposed to marry you after your memory was damaged.””
I stared at her.
“She was supposed to what?””
“She was already preparing.””
Daniel looked sick.
“That's why she monitored him.””
Sarah nodded.
“She needed to make sure you remembered nothing.””
I thought about Vanessa sitting beside me every night.
Asking what I dreamed about.
Asking whether I remembered anything from before our marriage.
I had always thought it was affection.
It had been surveillance.
“What happened to you after the attack?””
Sarah looked toward the window.
“I woke up in a clinic.””
“Victor's clinic?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you come for me?””
“I tried.””
“You could have called.””
“I did.””
“You sent the voicemail.””
“Dozens.””
I stared at her.
“Dozens?””
“Vanessa intercepted them.””
My chest tightened.
“I thought you abandoned me.””
“I thought you were dead.””
Neither of us spoke.
Then Sarah said something that made Daniel's expression change.
“Your father didn't die in an accident.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“He was killed.””
“By Victor?””
“No.””
She reached into her coat again.
This time, she removed a tiny memory card.
“Your father left this for you.””
I stared at it.
“How do you have it?””
“Because he gave it to me the night before he died.””
“Why?””
“Because he finally realized what he'd done.””
I felt anger rise.
“My father wasn't sorry.””
“He was.””
“He used my identity.””
“Yes.””
“He destroyed my marriage.””
“Yes.””
“He almost got me killed.””
“Yes.””
“Why should I care what he wanted?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Because he recorded a confession.””
Daniel took the card.
“We need a computer.””
“I have one.””
We connected the card to Daniel's laptop.
One video.
No title.
The screen flickered.
My father's face appeared.
Older.
Exhausted.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, Michael, I'm probably dead.””
I couldn't breathe.
He continued.
“I need you to know that everything I told you about Sarah was a lie.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
My father swallowed.
“She never betrayed you.””
The video paused.
A corrupted error appeared.
Daniel cursed.
“What?””
“The file is damaged.””
“Can you fix it?””
“Maybe.””
Sarah looked toward the window.
“Then we don't have time.””
“What do you mean?””
She pointed outside.
A black SUV had stopped across the street.
My blood went cold.
Sarah grabbed Emma.
“Vanessa found us.””
I rushed to the window.
The SUV doors opened.
Three men stepped out.
Then Vanessa emerged.
She looked up directly at the motel room.
And smiled.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
*Michael, come outside alone.*
May you like
Another followed.
*Or Sarah dies this time.*
