Chapter 9: The Truth About Kayla's Birth

Darius didn't sleep that night.

He sat at Marcus's kitchen table with the birth certificate displayed on his laptop.

The copy he had kept since Kayla was born listed him as her father.

But Helen had found an earlier record.

On that document, the father's information section had been left blank.

There was also a handwritten note from the hospital registrar.

*Paternity documentation pending.*

Darius stared at the words.

He remembered Kayla's birth.

He remembered holding Renee's hand in the hospital room.

He remembered the nurse placing their newborn daughter in his arms.

He remembered Renee whispering:

“She has your eyes.””

Had she been lying?

He immediately hated himself for thinking it.

Renee had loved him.

He knew that.

But he also knew that the woman in those recordings had been frightened of something.

At eight the next morning, Helen arranged for them to meet with a family-law specialist and obtain the relevant original records through the proper channels.

Darius brought every document he could find.

Helen examined the hospital correspondence.

“This handwritten notation doesn't establish anything about biological parentage,” she explained.

“It only means the hospital didn't have completed documentation at the time.””

“Then why does the original record look different?””

“Because the final registration may have been amended later. We need the hospital's archived records.””

Darius leaned forward.

“Can you request them?””

“Yes.””

He hesitated.

Then asked the question that had been haunting him.

“Could Renee have known I wasn't Kayla's biological father?””

Helen looked at him carefully.

“It's possible she knew something about the documentation. But we should not draw conclusions before we have evidence.””

Darius nodded.

He wanted facts.

Not guesses.

Meanwhile, Marcus had been reviewing the old family photographs.

He found one taken at Renee's baby shower.

Margaret was standing beside Richard Collins.

Both were smiling.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.

The Mitchells and the Collinses. One family forever.

Marcus frowned.

Why would Margaret and Richard have been so close before Brittany entered Darius's life?

He searched through old event photographs.

There were pictures of Margaret attending Richard's business functions.

There were pictures of Richard visiting the Mitchell family home.

And there was one photograph that made Marcus stop.

It showed Margaret holding newborn Kayla.

Richard stood beside her.

Renee was sitting in a hospital bed, looking exhausted.

On the back, Renee had written:

The people I trusted most.

Marcus sent the photograph to Darius.

When Darius saw it, he immediately recognized the hospital room.

It was taken on the day Kayla was born.

But something else caught his attention.

Richard was wearing the same gold ring he still wore today.

A ring engraved with the initials R.C.

Darius enlarged the image.

Then he noticed a second photograph attached to the same album.

It showed Renee and Margaret arguing in the hospital corridor.

The date was visible.

Three days after Kayla's birth.

Darius looked at Marcus.

“Why would they be arguing?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don't know.””

At eleven thirty, Helen called.

“The hospital has located part of the archived maternity file. They can release the relevant information through the proper process, but there's a document you should review first.””

Darius drove to her office.

Helen handed him a sealed envelope.

Inside was a copy of a letter written by Renee shortly after Kayla's birth.

The handwriting was shaky.

Helen,

I need to tell you something about Kayla's father, but I am not ready for Darius to know.

Darius stopped reading.

His throat tightened.

He continued.

I made a mistake years ago. It happened before Darius and I were married, during a period when I believed our relationship was over.

I have never stopped loving Darius. He is the man who raised our daughter from the moment she was born, and he is the only father Kayla has ever known.

Darius lowered the letter.

Helen remained silent.

He forced himself to continue.

I have been trying to obtain the original medical records because Margaret has threatened to use them against me. She says she knows something about Kayla's biological father.

She has told me that if I refuse to change the trust, she will reveal the truth in the most painful way possible.

Darius's hands trembled.

The letter continued.

I don't know whether she knows everything or whether she's using my fear to control me.

Please keep this confidential until I can explain it to Darius myself.

At the bottom was a final sentence.

Whatever happens, please remember that Kayla is his daughter in every way that matters.

Darius sat back.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

Helen spoke gently.

“Darius, biological parentage and legal parentage are different matters. Whatever the records show, your relationship with Kayla is not erased by a medical document.””

He looked at her.

“Did Renee cheat on me?””

Helen shook her head.

“The letter says something happened during a period when she believed your relationship was over. It doesn't establish the circumstances.””

Darius looked down.

He remembered the difficult year before their wedding.

They had briefly separated after an argument about his work.

He had moved into an apartment for several weeks.

They had reconciled.

He had never known Renee had been involved with anyone else.

And now he wondered whether the secret had been weighing on her for years.

Helen placed another document in front of him.

“This is a copy of the trust's original beneficiary designation.””

Darius looked at it.

Kayla was named as the sole beneficiary.

But there was a handwritten provision.

*The child's biological parentage shall not alter the beneficiary designation or the rights established under this trust.*

Darius stared.

“Renee added this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Perhaps she anticipated that someone might try to use the question of paternity to challenge Kayla's inheritance.””

He leaned back.

Everything was beginning to connect.

Margaret had wanted control of the trust.

Richard had been involved.

Brittany had planned to remove Kayla from the house.

And Renee had known that someone might use the truth about Kayla's birth against them.

Darius stood.

“I want the original hospital records.””

Helen nodded.

“We're working on that.””

He left her office and called Marcus.

“I need you to check something for me.””

“What?””

“Find out whether Margaret and Richard had any financial connection before Renee died.””

Marcus agreed.

An hour later, he called back.

“Darius, I found something.””

“What?””

“Richard's company received a substantial loan from a business owned by your mother several years ago.””

Darius frowned.

“How substantial?””

“Nearly two million dollars.””

Darius stopped walking.

“Why?””

“Richard's company was close to bankruptcy. Margaret's company stepped in.””

“When?””

“About six months before Renee died.””

Darius closed his eyes.

“Keep digging.””

Marcus hesitated.

“There is something else. Richard transferred a portion of his business interests to a private holding company shortly after Kayla was born.””

“Whose company?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“It's registered under Margaret's name.””

Darius felt the pieces moving into place.

But he still didn't know the most important part.

Who was Kayla's biological father?

That evening, Darius returned to Marcus's house.

Kayla was sitting on the living-room rug, arranging her stuffed animals in a circle.

She looked up.

“Daddy!””

He smiled and sat beside her.

“What are you doing?””

“Having a tea party.””

“May I join?””

She nodded and handed him a plastic cup.

“It's strawberry tea.””

Darius pretended to drink.

“Delicious.””

Kayla giggled.

Then she looked at him seriously.

“Daddy, are you sad?””

He put down the cup.

“A little.””

“Because of Mommy?””

He nodded.

“And because of other things. But none of them are your fault.””

Kayla reached for his hand.

“I'm still your little girl, right?””

Darius felt tears gathering in his eyes.

He pulled her into his arms.

“Nothing in this world could ever change that.””

She hugged him tightly.

“Even if I don't have the same hair?””

He laughed through his tears.

“Even then.””

For the first time since the incident, Kayla rested her head against his shoulder without touching her hat.

He held her until she fell asleep.

At midnight, Helen called.

“Darius, the hospital has completed its preliminary review.””

He sat upright.

“What did they find?””

“The archived records confirm that a paternity test was requested shortly after Kayla's birth.””

Darius gripped the phone.

“By whom?””

Helen paused.

“Renee.””

“Did they complete it?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Helen took a breath.

“The original report indicates that you were excluded as Kayla's biological father.””

Darius closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he asked:

“Who was listed as the biological father?””

Helen's voice became quieter.

“The hospital record doesn't name him directly. But the original laboratory request contains a reference number connected to a second patient file.””

“Whose file?””

Helen hesitated.

“Richard Collins.””

Darius felt the blood drain from his face.

Brittany's father.

The same man who had tried to gain control of Kayla's trust.

The same man who had stood in his living room defending Brittany.

The same man whose company had received millions from Margaret.

Darius whispered:

“Richard is Kayla's biological father?””

Helen answered carefully.

“The records strongly indicate that he was the individual tested. We need the complete original file and appropriate confirmation before making a definitive statement.””

Darius looked toward the hallway.

Kayla was sleeping peacefully.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of a handwritten note.

Darius recognized Renee's handwriting immediately.

The note read:

If Darius ever learns the truth, tell him I was going to explain everything. But first, tell him why Richard Collins was so desperate to keep Kayla close.

Beneath it was another sentence.

Because Richard already had a daughter with my name.

Darius stared at the message.

Then another notification appeared.

May you like

This time, it was from Brittany.

*You have no idea what your wife did before she died. And if you expose my father, I'll tell Kayla everything.*
