Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Two officers entered the house while Marcus escorted the remaining guests into the backyard.
The photographer had already packed his equipment.
The caterers were quietly removing their decorations.
What had been planned as a celebration of love had become a police investigation.
Brittany sat on the living-room sofa, repeatedly wiping her eyes with a tissue.
When Officer Daniels approached, she immediately began speaking.
“Officer, I want to explain something before anyone makes assumptions. I'm engaged to Darius. I have been helping raise his daughter for months.””
Officer Daniels opened his notebook.
“Did you cut the child's hair today?””
Brittany nodded.
“Yes, but it was a simple grooming decision.””
“Did the child consent?””
“She was being difficult.””
“That's not what I asked.””
Brittany looked toward Darius.
He stood near the staircase, his arms crossed.
Officer Daniels continued.
“Did you restrain her?””
“I held her still because she kept moving.””
“And did she ask you to stop?””
Brittany hesitated.
“She was crying.””
“Did she ask you to stop?””
“Yes.””
Officer Daniels wrote something down.
“Thank you. We'll need to speak with the child in an appropriate setting and document what happened.””
Brittany's expression changed.
“Are you suggesting I abused her?””
“I'm investigating an incident involving a child. Please allow me to do my job.””
Darius handed the officer the plastic bag and the photographs from Brittany's phone.
Officer Daniels studied the messages.
His partner, Officer Lewis, examined the screenshots.
“Mr. Mitchell, do you know what this appointment was for?””
“No. That's what we're trying to establish.””
Officer Lewis looked at Brittany.
“Can you explain the children's image studio?””
Brittany pressed her lips together.
“It was a consultation.””
“For what purpose?””
“It's private.””
Officer Daniels closed his notebook.
“Ma'am, this is no longer just a disagreement about a haircut. We need to understand whether there was a plan involving the child.””
Brittany stood.
“I want my lawyer.””
“You're entitled to speak with one.””
Darius watched as she walked toward the hallway.
For a second, she stopped beside him.
“Darius, please.””
He didn't look at her.
She lowered her voice.
“You're going to destroy everything over hair?””
He finally turned.
“No, Brittany. You destroyed everything when you decided my daughter didn't deserve a choice.””
Her face twisted.
“You always choose her.””
Darius stared at her.
“She's my daughter. That's what fathers do.””
Brittany walked away.
A few minutes later, Evelyn came downstairs carrying Kayla's small backpack.
“Darius, I packed her things. I think she should stay with your brother tonight if that's all right.””
Darius nodded.
“Thank you.””
Kayla appeared behind her.
She was wearing a soft pink sweater and leggings.
Her head was covered with a little knitted hat Evelyn had found in the nursery.
Darius crouched.
“Ready to go somewhere quiet, sweetheart?””
Kayla nodded.
“Can I take Mommy's picture?””
“Of course.””
She reached into her backpack and pulled out a small framed photograph.
It showed Renee holding her as a baby.
Darius stared at the picture.
Renee's smile was bright.
Her brown hair fell in loose curls around her shoulders.
Kayla held the frame tightly against her chest.
“I want Mommy to come with us.””
Darius kissed her cheek.
“She will, baby. In every way that matters.””
As they prepared to leave, Marcus approached with his phone.
“Darius, I need you to see something.””
Darius sighed.
“Not now, Marcus.””
“It's important.””
Marcus showed him the message thread he had recovered from the screenshots.
The conversation was between Brittany and a woman saved as *Elaine P.*
One message from Brittany read:
I need the curls removed before the wedding. He gets emotional whenever he sees them.
Elaine had responded:
Are you certain this is what the child wants?
Brittany's answer was immediate.
She doesn't need to want it. She needs to understand that the old family is over.
Darius stared at the screen.
Another message followed.
After the wedding, I'll have more control. For now, I just need the hair gone.
Marcus lowered the phone.
“She's been planning this for weeks.””
Darius looked toward the living room.
“Where is she?””
“Upstairs. The officers are still speaking with her.””
Darius shook his head.
Then he noticed something else in the conversation.
A message sent two days earlier.
Don't worry. The samples will be ready before Monday.
Darius frowned.
“Samples?””
Marcus nodded.
“That's what I thought.””
Before either man could say more, Evelyn called from the doorway.
“Darius?””
He turned.
She was holding a small envelope.
“I found this in the dressing room. It was underneath the jewelry box.””
Darius took it.
His name was written across the front in Renee's familiar handwriting.
His fingers went numb.
He recognized it immediately.
Renee had died two years earlier.
He hadn't seen her handwriting in months.
“Where did you find this?””
“In the drawer Brittany uses for her makeup. I think she must have moved it there.””
Darius opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a folded letter and a small photograph.
The photograph showed Renee sitting on the nursery floor with baby Kayla asleep in her lap.
On the back, Renee had written:
For my two favorite people. May you always protect each other.
Darius unfolded the letter.
It was dated three weeks before Renee died.
His eyes moved across the page.
My darling Darius,
If you're reading this, I hope you've found a way to smile again. I know how much you love Kayla, and I know how difficult the future may feel without me.
Please don't be afraid to love again. I want you to be happy.
But there's one thing I need you to remember.
The woman who enters our daughter's life doesn't have to become me. She doesn't have to replace me. She only has to love Kayla for the little girl she is.
And if she ever makes Kayla feel that she must erase me to earn her love, please don't ignore it.
Darius stopped reading.
His eyes blurred.
The final paragraph was shorter.
*Kayla will grow up. Her hair will change. Her clothes will change.
Her dreams will change. But please never let anyone make her believe that she has to change who she is to deserve a place in your family.*
I trust you.
Forever, Renee.
Darius pressed the letter against his chest.
For two years, he had struggled with the guilt of moving forward.
He had wondered whether dating again meant betraying Renee.
He had wondered whether Kayla would feel abandoned if another woman entered their lives.
He had spent months convincing himself that Brittany was the answer.
Now he understood how badly he had wanted his family to feel complete again.
And how easily that desire had blinded him.
Marcus placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Brother, you couldn't have known.””
Darius looked toward the staircase.
“I should have seen it.””
“You trusted her.””
“I trusted her with the most important thing in my life.””
His voice cracked.
“And she hurt her.””
A small movement caught his attention.
Kayla was standing beside Evelyn, holding Renee's photograph.
“Daddy?””
Darius quickly wiped his eyes.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
She approached and looked at the letter.
“Is that from Mommy?””
“Yes.””
“What does it say?””
Darius knelt beside her.
“It says your mommy wanted you to be loved exactly the way you are.””
Kayla thought about that.
Then she touched the knitted hat covering her head.
“Even without my curls?””
Darius held her face gently.
“Especially without your curls.””
She smiled faintly.
It was the first smile he had seen from her since the incident.
Then she whispered something that made Evelyn turn away to hide her tears.
“Daddy, can we put Mommy's picture next to my bed tonight? I don't want Brittany to move it again.””
Darius froze.
“What do you mean, baby?””
Kayla looked down.
“She moved Mommy's pictures before. She put them in the storage room. She said they made the house look sad.””
Darius slowly stood.
“Evelyn, did you know about this?””
Evelyn nodded sadly.
“I found some of Renee's things in storage last month. Brittany told me she was reorganizing.””
Darius looked toward the officers.
Then he turned back to his daughter.
“Did Brittany ever tell you not to tell me something?””
Kayla nodded.
“She said it was our little secret.””
Darius crouched again.
“What secret?””
Kayla looked toward the hallway.
Then she whispered:
“She said after the wedding, she was going to send me away to live with Grandma because she didn't want children in her new house.””
Darius stopped breathing.
“Who told you that?””
“Brittany.””
“Did she say when?””
Kayla nodded.
“She said after the honeymoon. She said Daddy would understand because you wanted a new family.””
Darius looked at Marcus.
Neither brother spoke.
The police officer approached after hearing the conversation.
“Mr. Mitchell, I think we need to discuss this further.””
Darius nodded.
But before he could answer, Officer Lewis came rushing down the stairs.
He held a tablet in his hand.
“Mr. Mitchell, we found something on Ms. Collins's phone that you need to see.””
Darius took the tablet.
A calendar entry was open.
The date was six weeks away.
The day after his wedding.
The title read:
*KAYLA — TRANSFER ARRANGEMENTS.*
Underneath was an address.
And a name Darius recognized immediately.
His own mother.
Margaret Mitchell.
The woman who had buried Renee beside her own daughter-in-law.
The woman who had told Darius she would never allow anyone to replace Renee.
Darius looked at the officer.
“Why is my mother's address on this document?””
Officer Lewis glanced at the screen.
“That's what we're trying to determine.””
Then another notification appeared.
A new message from Brittany's phone.
The sender was saved as *MARGARET*.
May you like
And its first line made Darius's blood run cold.
Brittany, please tell me you haven't told Darius what we agreed to do with Kayla...
