Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Haircut
Darius carefully lifted Kayla into Evelyn's arms.
“Take her upstairs, please. Keep her away from Brittany.””
Kayla immediately grabbed his sleeve.
“Don't let her come near me again, Daddy.””
“I won't, baby. I promise.””
Evelyn kissed the little girl's forehead.
“Come with me, sweetheart. We'll find your favorite pajamas.””
Kayla looked at her father one more time before disappearing upstairs.
Darius turned toward Marcus.
“What did you find?””
Marcus held up the plastic bag.
“Look at this.””
The bag contained several long sections of Kayla's brown curls. A small white sticker was attached to it.
Written in black ink were three words:
*FINAL HAIR SAMPLE.*
Darius frowned.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?””
Marcus turned the bag over.
There was another label.
*K.C. — PRIVATE COLLECTION.*
Brittany suddenly stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Marcus moved it behind his back.
“Why?””
“Because it's mine.””
Darius looked at her.
“Why do you have a bag of my daughter's hair?””
Brittany laughed nervously.
“It's a silly beauty project. I was going to have something made.””
“Made from my daughter's hair?””
“Darius, you're twisting everything.””
Marcus examined the label again.
“Private collection? What does that mean?””
Brittany reached for the bag.
“It's personal.””
Darius blocked her.
“Nothing involving my daughter is personal anymore.””
Her expression hardened.
“You're humiliating me in front of your family.””
“You humiliated yourself when you ignored a six-year-old begging you to stop.””
Brittany threw her hands up.
“I was trying to prepare her for our new family!””
Darius stared at her.
“What new family?””
“Our family! You, me, and Kayla. I can't spend the rest of my life letting that child control every decision.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She isn't controlling anything. She's a little girl.””
Brittany turned toward him.
“You don't understand. You don't live here.””
“No,” Marcus replied.
“But I've known Darius since before you did. And I've never seen him look at anyone the way he looks at his daughter.””
Brittany's jaw tightened.
Darius held out his hand.
“Give me your phone.””
She blinked.
“What?””
“Your phone. Now.””
“You have no right to search my belongings.””
“Then don't give it to me. I'll let the police handle it.””
Brittany stared at him.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then she pulled her phone from her handbag.
“Fine. You want to see something? Look.””
She unlocked the screen and opened her photo gallery.
Darius took the phone.
At first, he saw ordinary pictures of the house, wedding decorations, and clothing.
Then he noticed an album labeled *KAYLA'S NEW LOOK*.
He opened it.
His stomach tightened.
The first photograph showed Kayla sleeping on the living-room couch.
The second showed her standing in the garden.
The third was a close-up of her curls.
There were more than twenty photographs.
Some showed different hairstyles. Others showed Kayla from behind, with measurements written underneath.
Darius scrolled.
Then he found a screenshot of an online message.
The sender's name was hidden, but Brittany's response was visible.
Once the curls are gone, the problem is solved. He won't have that reminder of Renee staring at him every day.
Darius read it twice.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“What is this?””
Brittany looked away.
“Those messages are being taken out of context.””
“What context could possibly make this acceptable?””
“You don't understand how difficult it has been for me.””
Darius stared at her.
“Explain it.””
Brittany took a breath.
“Every day, I walk into a house where everything reminds you of your dead wife. Her photographs are everywhere. Her things are everywhere. Even that child's hair is treated like some sacred object.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Watch what you're saying.””
But Brittany continued.
“Kayla gets everything. She gets your attention, your money, your affection. You won't even let me change her bedroom without asking her permission!””
Darius shook his head slowly.
“She's a child. You're an adult.””
“I'm supposed to be your wife!””
“You were supposed to be someone my daughter could trust.””
Brittany's eyes filled with tears.
Not the kind Kayla had cried upstairs.
These were angry tears.
“I gave up so much to be with you.””
“You knew I had a daughter when you started dating me.””
“I thought things would be different after we got married.””
There it was.
The truth.
Darius looked at her as though he were seeing her for the first time.
“You thought marrying me would give you permission to replace Renee?””
Brittany didn't answer.
Marcus placed the bag of hair on the console.
“Darius, there's something else.””
He pointed to the note.
The back of the sticker contained a handwritten phone number and an appointment time.
*Monday, 10:30 A.M.*
Below it was a name.
*Dr. Elaine Porter — Children's Image Studio.*
Darius frowned.
“What's a children's image studio?””
Brittany snatched the note.
“It's nothing.””
Marcus reached for his phone.
“I'm going to find out.””
“No!”” Brittany shouted.
Both men turned.
She realized what she had done.
Her breathing became uneven.
Darius spoke quietly.
“What were you planning to do with Kayla's hair?””
Brittany looked toward the staircase.
Then she whispered something that made his blood run cold.
“I was going to make sure she stopped looking like her mother.””
Darius stepped back.
For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.
He remembered Renee sitting in the bathroom with Kayla on her lap, carefully separating each curl with her fingers.
He remembered the little wooden comb she had used.
He remembered the way she smiled whenever Kayla called her hair her crown.
And now Brittany had deliberately destroyed it.
Darius reached for his phone again.
“I'm calling the police.””
Brittany grabbed his wrist.
“Please, listen to me.””
He pulled away.
“Don't touch me.””
“I made a mistake!””
“You made several decisions. You brought the clippers upstairs. You ignored her crying.
You held her down. And you kept going.””
“I didn't think you'd react like this.””
Darius gave a bitter laugh.
“That's what you're worried about?””
Outside, the photographer arrived.
The doorbell rang.
Brittany looked toward the entrance.
“Darius, people are here. We can discuss this privately.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Cancel the celebration.””
Marcus nodded and walked toward the entrance.
Brittany followed Darius as he moved toward the staircase.
“Where are you going?””
“To check on my daughter.””
“You can't just abandon me here!””
Darius stopped.
He turned around.
“You abandoned her the moment she begged you to stop and you kept cutting.””
Brittany opened her mouth, but no words came.
Then Darius went upstairs.
In the guest bedroom, Kayla sat on the edge of the bed while Evelyn gently brushed the remaining hair on her head.
A pink stuffed rabbit rested in her lap.
When Darius entered, she looked up.
“Daddy, can you fix it?””
He sat beside her.
“I wish I could, sweetheart.””
“Can you ask the hair lady to put my curls back?””
Darius swallowed.
“We'll find someone who can help us make your hair comfortable again. But you don't need to change anything to be beautiful.””
Kayla looked down at the rabbit.
“Mommy said my curls were like hers.””
Darius nodded.
“She did.””
“Will Mommy still know it's me?””
His eyes filled.
He pulled his daughter into his arms.
“Oh, baby. Your mommy would know you anywhere.””
Kayla rested her head against his chest.
After a moment, she whispered:
“Daddy, Brittany said something else.””
Darius pulled back.
“What did she say?””
“She said when she becomes my mommy, I have to stop calling my real mommy's name.””
Evelyn stopped brushing.
Darius went completely still.
“Did she say that today?””
Kayla nodded.
“She said I can't have two mommies. She said Mommy Renee is gone, so I have to forget her.””
Darius closed his eyes.
Then he kissed Kayla's forehead.
“You never have to forget your mother. Not for anyone. Do you understand?””
Kayla nodded.
He stood and walked toward the door.
Marcus was waiting outside.
“Darius, the police are on their way.””
“Good.””
Marcus hesitated.
“I searched that studio.””
Darius looked at him.
“What did you find?””
Marcus showed him his phone.
The website advertised custom hairpieces, private consultations, and children's appearance transformations.
But one particular page caught his attention.
It featured a photograph of a little girl with long brown curls.
The caption read:
*Preserving a child's natural beauty before a major family transition.*
Darius felt sick.
“Why would Brittany contact them?””
Marcus zoomed in on the photograph.
Then he pointed at the girl's face.
“Darius, look closely.””
The little girl in the photograph wasn't Kayla.

And standing behind her was Brittany.
