Chapter 5: The Woman Who Walked Into the House

Margaret Mitchell entered the living room wearing a navy-blue designer coat and carrying a leather handbag.

Behind her stood a man Darius immediately recognized.

Richard Collins.

Brittany's father.

Darius stared at them.

“What are you two doing here?””

Margaret removed her gloves.

“Don't speak to me like that.””

Richard stepped forward.

“We heard there was a misunderstanding involving Brittany.””

“A misunderstanding?””

Richard glanced at the officers' paperwork still lying on the console.

“Let's not make this worse than it needs to be.””

Darius laughed bitterly.

“My daughter was restrained and had her hair shaved against her wishes. Your daughter admitted it.””

Richard's expression remained controlled.

“Children exaggerate.””

Marcus moved toward him.

“Be careful.””

Margaret raised one hand.

“Enough. Darius, I came because someone needs to think clearly.””

He looked at his mother.

“You had a plan to take Kayla away from me.””

Margaret sighed.

“I never said that.””

“I read your messages.””

“Those messages were private conversations.””

“They involved my daughter.””

Margaret placed her handbag on the sofa.

“Brittany told me she was having trouble establishing boundaries. I thought Kayla might benefit from spending time with me.””

“Then why did you arrange a guardianship consultation?””

Richard answered before Margaret could.

“It was simply an exploratory legal discussion.””

Darius turned toward him.

“You were involved too?””

Richard straightened his jacket.

“My daughter was about to become your wife. Naturally, I wanted to make sure the arrangement was suitable for everyone.””

“Everyone except my daughter.””

Margaret shook her head.

“Darius, you're being emotional.””

He stared at her.

“She's six years old. She was crying because someone she trusted cut off her hair. What exactly do you expect me to feel?””

Richard took a breath.

“Look, I understand you're upset. But Brittany has been under tremendous pressure. She was trying to prepare for the wedding and establish a relationship with Kayla.””

“By shaving her head?””

Richard looked away.

Margaret walked closer.

“Your daughter has become too attached to Renee's memory. It's not healthy for her to keep living in the past.””

Darius's expression changed.

“Don't you dare.””

Margaret continued.

“Every room has Renee's photographs. Every family tradition revolves around her. You refuse to let anyone make changes because you can't move on.””

Darius stepped closer.

“Renee died. She didn't abandon us. And my daughter is allowed to remember her mother.””

Margaret's voice softened.

“I lost her too.””

For a moment, Darius almost believed her.

Then she added:

“But I also know that Kayla needs a living mother figure. Brittany was willing to provide that.””

Darius shook his head.

“She didn't want to be Kayla's mother. She wanted Kayla to stop being Renee's daughter.””

Richard frowned.

“That's an unfair accusation.””

“Then tell me why Brittany was collecting my daughter's hair.””

Neither answered.

Darius reached for his phone.

He opened the message thread and showed them the photograph of the plastic bag.

Margaret's eyes widened.

Richard looked at the floor.

“What is that?””

“Evidence from the dressing room.””

Margaret recovered quickly.

“That's ridiculous. Brittany probably wanted to keep a lock of hair as a sentimental gesture.””

“Sentimental?””

Darius's voice rose.

“She shaved her head because she couldn't stand seeing Renee in her.””

Margaret looked toward the staircase.

“Where is Kayla?””

“Upstairs.””

“I want to see her.””

“No.””

“Darius, I'm her grandmother.””

“And she's frightened. You're not going near her until we understand why you agreed to take her away.””

Margaret's face hardened.

“You cannot keep a grandmother from her grandchild.””

“Watch me.””

Richard stepped between them.

“Let's calm down. There is no reason to involve lawyers or courts over a family disagreement.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Your daughter is being investigated. I think lawyers are exactly what everyone needs.””

Richard turned toward him.

“Who asked you?””

“Someone who actually cares about the little girl upstairs.””

The tension in the room grew.

Then a small voice came from the staircase.

“Grandma?””

Everyone turned.

Kayla stood on the landing, holding her stuffed elephant.

Margaret immediately changed her expression.

“Oh, my sweet girl!””

She hurried toward the stairs.

Kayla took one step backward.

Margaret stopped.

“Come give Grandma a hug.””

Kayla looked at her father.

Darius walked to the bottom of the stairs.

“It's okay, sweetheart. You don't have to do anything you don't want to.””

Margaret frowned.

“Don't teach her to be afraid of me.””

Kayla held her elephant tighter.

“You said I was going to live with you.””

Margaret's expression flickered.

“Darling, that was only because your daddy is very busy.””

“But I don't want to leave Daddy.””

“You wouldn't be leaving him forever.””

Kayla's eyes filled.

“Would you make me cut my hair again?””

Margaret froze.

Richard looked sharply at his wife.

Darius slowly turned toward his mother.

“What did you tell her?””

Margaret shook her head.

“Nothing. She's confused.””

Kayla began speaking faster.

“You said Brittany was going to be my new mommy, and Grandma would help me learn how to be good.””

Margaret's lips tightened.

“I only wanted to help you, sweetheart.””

“You said Mommy Renee was gone and I shouldn't talk about her anymore.””

Darius felt his hands curl into fists.

Margaret looked at him.

“Children misunderstand adult conversations.””

Kayla shook her head.

“No, I heard you.””

The little girl began crying.

“You told Brittany that Mommy's pictures made me sad and I should forget them.””

Evelyn appeared behind Kayla and gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

“That's enough, sweetheart. Come with me.””

Kayla looked at her grandmother.

“Why don't you like Mommy?””

Margaret didn't answer.

For the first time, her carefully maintained composure began to crack.

“I never said that.””

“But you don't say her name anymore.””

Darius climbed the stairs and lifted Kayla into his arms.

“Come on, baby.””

As he carried her away, he heard Margaret say something that stopped him.

“Renee would be ashamed of the way you're raising her.””

Darius slowly turned.

“What did you just say?””

Margaret lifted her chin.

“You heard me. Renee was a wonderful woman, but she spoiled that child. She made everyone believe Kayla was special because of her hair and her little habits.””

Darius stared at his mother.

“Get out.””

Margaret blinked.

“Darius—”

“Get out of my house.””

Richard grabbed his wife's arm.

“Margaret, let's go.””

But Margaret refused to move.

“I am your mother.””

“And Kayla is my daughter.””

His voice shook.

“You were supposed to protect her. Instead, you helped someone plan to take her away.””

Margaret picked up her handbag.

“You'll come crawling back when you realize how difficult it is to raise a child alone.””

Darius looked at her.

“I've been raising her alone since Renee died. I know exactly how difficult it is.””

Margaret walked toward the entrance.

Richard followed.

At the door, he stopped.

“Darius, this isn't over. My daughter has rights too.””

Darius looked at him coldly.

“Then she can explain her actions to the authorities.””

The door closed.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Kayla lifted her head from Darius's shoulder.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Can I still call Grandma Grandma?””

He closed his eyes.

“Of course. You can love someone and still know when they have hurt you.””

Kayla thought about that.

Then she asked:

“Can we go somewhere where nobody knows me?””

Darius kissed her forehead.

“Where would you like to go?””

She pointed toward the garden.

“Can we sit with Mommy's flowers?””

Darius carried her outside.

Renee's favorite white roses were blooming near the stone pathway.

He sat on the garden bench with Kayla beside him.

For a few minutes, they listened to the birds.

Then Kayla reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a tiny brown curl.

Darius stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“I found it in my dress.””

He took the curl carefully.

Kayla looked at it.

“I wanted to save one.””

Darius's eyes filled.

He opened his palm and let her place it there.

“We'll keep it safe.””

But before they could go inside, Marcus came through the garden doors.

He was holding a thick folder.

“Darius, I found something else in the wedding paperwork.””

Darius looked up.

“What now?””

Marcus placed the folder beside him.

“Your mother and Brittany didn't just discuss guardianship.””

He opened it.

Inside was a draft legal agreement.

At the bottom were two signatures.

Margaret Mitchell.

And Brittany Collins.

Darius read the first paragraph.

His face went pale.

The document wasn't about temporary childcare.

May you like

It was a proposed transfer of financial control over a trust Renee had established for Kayla.

And the person listed as the future trustee was Brittany.
