Chapter 8: My Wife Tried to Steal Her Stepdaughter's Future
I didn't sleep that night.
At six in the morning, I was already in Daniel's office, carrying the original documents from Rachel's safe.
Daniel had spent most of the night reviewing the records.
When I entered, he was speaking with another attorney.
He ended the call and looked at me.
"We have a problem, but we also have an opportunity.""
"What kind of opportunity?""
"Northstar's foreclosure request depends on the validity of the authorization documents. If those documents are fraudulent, the entire claim becomes vulnerable.""
I placed the folders on his desk.
"We found the original correspondence.""
He opened the folder and began reading.
His expression darkened.
"Richard Morgan?""
"Celeste's brother.""
Daniel looked at the emails.
"These are extremely important.""
"What can we do?""
"First, preserve the digital evidence. Second, obtain forensic verification of the signatures. Third, notify the court that the property owner is a minor and that no valid guardian authorization was provided.""
"How quickly?""
"Today.""
He picked up the phone.
I sat down.
My hands were shaking, not from fear for myself, but because I kept imagining Maya standing outside this house, believing that the only thing her mother had left her was about to be taken away.
I couldn't let that happen.
At ten thirty, Daniel called.
"Andre, the judge has granted a temporary emergency order. Northstar cannot proceed with foreclosure or transfer the property until the ownership and loan documents are reviewed.""
I closed my eyes.
"Thank God.""
"There's more. The court has requested the original authorization.""
"Can they produce it?""
"That's what we're about to find out.""
I returned to Rebecca's house.
Maya and Devin were sitting on the porch.
Devin was showing his sister pictures from his phone.
When they saw me, Maya stood.
"Are we losing the house?""
I shook my head.
"Not today.""
Her shoulders relaxed.
"Does that mean Mom's house is still mine?""
"Yes, sweetheart. It belongs to you.""
She smiled faintly.
Then Devin spoke.
"Can we stay here for a few days?""
I looked at the house.
"Of course.""
For the first time since the airport, both children seemed to breathe normally.
We spent the afternoon cleaning the kitchen and opening windows. Rebecca found old board games in a cabinet, and Devin discovered a fishing rod in the garage.
Maya took a blanket to the dock.
I watched her sitting beside the water.
For years, I had believed providing a comfortable home was enough.
I had paid the bills, bought the school supplies, attended parent-teacher meetings, and worked late so my children could have opportunities I never had.
But somewhere along the way, I had allowed my daughter to feel unwanted under her own roof.
That realization hurt more than anything Celeste had done.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
"Andre, I need you to come back to the office.""
"What's happened?""
"The other side has submitted additional evidence.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What evidence?""
"A guardianship authorization signed by you, allegedly granting Celeste authority to manage Maya's property.""
I gripped the phone.
"I never signed anything like that.""
"I know. But the document includes your signature.""
"Then it's forged.""
"That's our position. The court wants an explanation.""
I looked toward Maya.
"Send me a copy.""
Daniel emailed it immediately.
I opened the document.
The signature looked remarkably similar to mine.
But the date was impossible.
It was dated two months after I had been traveling overseas for work.
I remembered that period clearly because I had spent three weeks in London.
I had not signed anything in Pennsylvania.
Then I noticed the witness's name.
*Devin Bennett.*
My heart dropped.
I called Daniel.
"Why is my son listed as a witness?""
"That's one of the reasons the document is concerning.""
I ended the call and walked toward the dock.
Devin was inside, helping Rebecca carry groceries.
I waited until we were alone.
"Buddy, I need to ask you something.""
He looked up.
"Okay.""
"Did your mother ever ask you to sign any documents?""
His face changed.
"What kind of documents?""
"Anything about Maya's property.""
He looked down.
Then he slowly nodded.
"When?""
"Last month.""
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?""
"Mom said Dad needed help with some paperwork. She told me it was about the house insurance.""
"Did you sign something?""
He swallowed.
"Yes.""
I sat beside him.
"What did it look like?""
"A paper with a lot of writing. Mom showed me where to sign. She said it was just confirming that I knew about the property.""
"Did you read it?""
"No. I thought it was normal.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did she tell you not to mention it?""
He nodded.
"She said you were busy and it would just confuse you.""
I took his hand.
"Devin, listen to me. You're not in trouble.""
His eyes filled.
"Did I help her steal Maya's house?""
"No.""
"But my name is on it.""
"You're a child. Adults are responsible for what they ask you to sign.""
He began crying.
"I didn't know.""
I pulled him into a hug.
"I know, buddy.""
When I told Maya what had happened, she looked at her brother for a long time.
Then she walked over and hugged him.
"You didn't know," she whispered.
Devin buried his face in her shoulder.
"I'm sorry.""
Maya shook her head.
"I know.""
It was a small moment.
But it was the first time since everything began that I felt our family coming back together.
The following morning, Daniel arranged an emergency meeting with the attorneys representing Northstar.
Richard Morgan arrived wearing an expensive charcoal suit and carrying a leather briefcase.
Celeste came with him.
She looked different from the woman who had stood on Rebecca's porch.
Her eyes were tired. Her makeup was uneven, and her hands kept twisting the strap of her handbag.
Richard offered his hand.
"Andre. It's unfortunate things have become so complicated.""
I didn't shake it.
"Then explain the forged documents.""
He smiled politely.
"I believe there's been a misunderstanding.""
Daniel placed the authorization on the table.
"Mr. Morgan, do you recognize this document?""
"Yes.""
"Who prepared it?""
"Our legal department.""
"Who witnessed it?""
"My sister.""
Daniel pointed to Devin's name.
"And this signature?""
Richard glanced at it.
"That's the minor's acknowledgment.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"A fourteen-year-old cannot authorize a financial transaction involving his sister's property.""
Richard shifted in his chair.
"That's not what we're claiming.""
"Then what are you claiming?""
Richard opened his briefcase and removed another document.
He slid it across the table.
"This is the agreement under which Celeste provided financial support to the Bennett household.""
I looked at it.
It listed several payments made over the previous three years.
School expenses.
Home repairs.
Medical bills.
Vacation deposits.
Then I noticed a paragraph at the bottom.
It stated that Celeste had made these payments in exchange for an eventual beneficial interest in certain family assets.
I stared at her.
"Did you write this?""
Celeste looked away.
Richard answered for her.
"It was a private family arrangement.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You created a contract giving my wife an interest in property owned by my daughter?""
"Your daughter was a minor.""
"Exactly.""
Daniel picked up the document.
"This agreement is not signed by the property's legal owner or the authorized trustee. It has no apparent effect on Maya's ownership.""
Richard's expression hardened.
Then Celeste finally spoke.
"Andre, I did everything for this family.""
I turned toward her.
"You used my son's signature. You forged mine. You borrowed against a house belonging to a sixteen-year-old girl.""
"I was trying to secure our future!""
"Whose future?""
She didn't answer.
Richard closed his briefcase.
"This meeting is over.""
Daniel stood.
"Not quite. We have a recording, emails, banking records, and evidence that the loan proceeds were transferred to your personal account.""
Richard froze.
I watched the color drain from his face.
Celeste turned toward him.
"You told me those transfers couldn't be traced.""
The room went silent.
She had just admitted exactly what we needed.
Richard stared at his sister.
"Shut up, Celeste.""
But it was too late.
Daniel slowly placed his pen on the table.
"Would you like to repeat that?""
Celeste covered her mouth.
Richard stood abruptly.
"We're leaving.""
As they reached the door, Celeste turned toward me.
Her eyes were wet.
"Andre, please. We can fix this.""
I looked at her.
"No. You can explain it to the authorities.""
She left without another word.
I thought that would be the end of it.
But Daniel received a message less than an hour later.
He read it twice before showing me.
Northstar's bank had frozen the account containing the $1.25 million.
And investigators had discovered another transfer.
A payment of $400,000 had been sent from Richard's company to an account registered under Celeste's maiden name.
Daniel looked at me.
"Andre, I don't think this was just about the lake house.""
I stared at the transaction.
"Then what was it about?""
He opened the attachment.
It was a financial agreement dated six months before Celeste and I married.
The beneficiary listed on the final page was not Celeste.
It was someone named *Thomas Morgan*.
May you like
Her son from a previous relationship.
A son she had told me had died shortly after birth.
