Chapter 3: The Promise Her Mother Left Behind

I found a quiet corner near the airport windows and called Rebecca again.

Maya and Devin sat together beside the luggage.

Neither child spoke.

Outside, planes moved slowly across the runway, their engines rumbling through the glass.

"Rebecca," I said, "start from the beginning.""

She exhaled.

"Before Rachel died, she became worried about Maya.""

My stomach tightened.

"Worried about what?""

"About how easily you trusted people. She loved you, Andre. But she knew you wanted Maya to have a mother figure so badly that you might ignore things you shouldn't.""

I looked at my daughter.

Maya was staring at the floor, turning the silver ring on her finger.

"Did Rachel know about Celeste?""

"No. She never met her.""

"Then what was she worried about?""

"She was worried about anyone who might make Maya feel like loving another woman meant betraying her mother.""

I rubbed my forehead.

Rebecca continued.

"Rachel kept a box at my house. Letters, photographs, recordings. She asked me to give it to Maya when she was old enough to understand.""

"Why didn't you give it to her earlier?""

"Because I promised her I wouldn't.""

I swallowed.

"What's in the box?""

"Her mother's letters. And something else.""

"What?""

"A recording.""

My pulse quickened.

"What does it say?""

"Andre, I haven't listened to the whole thing. Rachel told me it was meant for Maya, not for me.""

I glanced toward the children.

"Can you send it?""

"I can send you a copy of the recording, but I want Maya to hear it when she's ready.""

"Okay.""

"And Andre?""

"Yes?""

"There's something you need to understand. Rachel didn't just leave money for Maya. She created a trust.""

I went still.

"What trust?""

"The educational and personal inheritance she established before she died.""

I knew Rachel had purchased a life insurance policy. I also remembered a small account she had set up for Maya.

But I had assumed everything had been transferred years ago.

"How much?""

"I don't know the current balance. The original amount was substantial. She instructed the attorney to manage it until Maya turned eighteen.""

I frowned.

"Why are you telling me this now?""

"Because I recently received a letter from the attorney. Someone requested information about the trust.""

"Who?""

Rebecca paused.

"Celeste.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"How could she access it?""

"She couldn't. But she tried.""

A cold sensation spread through my chest.

"Did she get anything?""

"Not from the trust itself. The attorney refused to release information without proper authorization.""

I stared at the airport floor.

"How did she even know about it?""

"That's what I wanted to ask you.""

The call ended shortly afterward.

I stood there for a moment, trying to connect the pieces.

The canceled ticket.

The hidden refund.

The separate reservation.

The trust.

Then Devin approached me.

"Dad?""

I turned.

"What's wrong?""

He looked toward Maya before speaking.

"Mom told me something a few weeks ago.""

"What?""

"She said when we got back from vacation, Maya might have to move out.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

"What did she mean?""

"She said Grandma was getting older, and Maya would probably be happier living somewhere quieter.""

I looked at him.

"Did she tell you why?""

He nodded slowly.

"She said the house was getting too crowded. And that she wanted us to have more time as a family without having to worry about Maya's feelings.""

I stared at my son.

He looked ashamed.

"I should've told you.""

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You're fourteen, Devin. You shouldn't have been put in the middle of this.""

"But she's my sister.""

"I know.""

He glanced toward Maya.

"She thinks nobody wants her around.""

I followed his gaze.

Maya sat alone now, staring at the boarding gates.

I walked over and crouched beside her.

"Sweetheart.""

She looked up.

"Are we going home?""

"Not yet.""

I sat beside her.

"Your Aunt Rebecca has something your mother left for you.""

Maya's face changed.

"Mom?""

I nodded.

"She kept something for you.""

For the first time that morning, Maya looked genuinely curious.

"Why?""

"Because she loved you. And she wanted you to have something to remember her by.""

Maya looked down at her sneakers.

"I barely remember her voice.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Then maybe it's time you heard it again.""

She leaned against my shoulder.

We sat that way until my phone rang.

It was Celeste.

I answered.

"Where are you?"" she demanded.

"At the airport.""

"Good. Get the kids and come home.""

"No.""

"Andre, stop this nonsense. You're ruining everything.""

I looked through the window at the planes.

"You ruined it when you canceled Maya's ticket.""

"Oh, for heaven's sake. I already explained why.""

"You also told Devin that Maya wasn't part of your real family.""

Silence.

Then Celeste laughed bitterly.

"You're seriously going to believe a teenager's interpretation of a private conversation?""

"He showed me the messages.""

Her voice sharpened.

"That little girl has been manipulating you for years.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The familiar accusation.

Whenever Maya expressed sadness, Celeste called her dramatic. Whenever Maya asked for something, Celeste called her spoiled. Whenever I defended her, Celeste accused me of favoring my first wife.

"Don't call my daughter that again.""

"Your daughter is the reason this marriage has been miserable.""

I stared at the phone.

"Then why did you marry me?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, I heard a drawer slam in the background.

Then she spoke again.

"Listen carefully. You have no idea what you've just started. There are things you don't know about that girl.""

I straightened.

"What things?""

She went quiet.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Ask Rebecca why Rachel changed her will three weeks before she died.""

The call disconnected.

I slowly lowered my phone.

Maya was watching me.

"What happened?""

I didn't want to frighten her.

But I couldn't pretend anymore.

"Your stepmother says there's something we don't know about your mother's will.""

Maya's face went pale.

"Did Mom leave something bad?""

"No, sweetheart. Nothing your mother did could ever make you less loved.""

But my mind was racing.

Why had Rachel changed her will?

Why had Celeste tried to access the trust?

And why did she seem so terrified that Maya might discover what her mother had left behind?

My phone buzzed.

A message from Rebecca.

*Rebecca: Andre, I found the original envelope. There's a letter addressed to you, too. Rachel specifically instructed me not to give it to you unless Maya was in danger of being pushed out of the family.*

A second message arrived.

*Rebecca: I think you need to read it before you make another decision about Celeste.*

Then came a photograph.

An old cream-colored envelope.

My name was written across the front in Rachel's unmistakable handwriting.

May you like

And beneath it were six words that made my knees feel weak.

*Andre, if you're reading this, she's back.*
