Chapter 6: The Money Was Never the Real Secret
Rebecca led us back downstairs and locked the front door.
She checked the side entrance, closed the blinds, and placed the wooden box on the dining table.
Maya sat beside Devin.
I remained standing.
"Explain the second account.""
Rebecca opened the box and removed a thin leather folder.
"Rachel created two separate financial arrangements. The first was the trust we already discussed. The second was an account connected to a property.""
"What property?""
"Her father's lake house.""
I frowned.
"Your father sold that house years ago.""
"No, Andre. He transferred ownership to Rachel before he died.""
I stared at her.
"That's impossible.""
"It's in the deed.""
She showed me a photocopy.
The property was a small lakefront estate in the Pocono Mountains. Rachel had inherited it from her father, but I had always assumed she sold it to cover medical expenses.
Apparently, she hadn't.
"Why did she keep it secret?""
"Because she wanted Maya to have somewhere that belonged to her. Somewhere nobody could take away.""
Maya looked up.
"Mom owned a house?""
Rebecca smiled sadly.
"Yes, sweetheart. And she wanted you to have it.""
"Why didn't Dad know?""
Rebecca looked at me.
"Rachel was worried that if Celeste discovered the property, she would try to get access to it.""
I sat down slowly.
"How could Celeste know about something I didn't even know existed?""
Rebecca pulled out another sheet of paper.
"Because she contacted the county records office.""
My jaw tightened.
"When?""
"About six weeks ago.""
I stared at the document.
It showed a property records request submitted under Celeste's name.
The reason listed was:
Verification of ownership and potential transfer eligibility.
I looked at Rebecca.
"She was trying to transfer property that belonged to my daughter?""
"She was asking questions about how it could be transferred.""
I picked up my phone.
I wanted to call Celeste.
I wanted to demand an explanation.
But before I could, the doorbell rang.
Three sharp presses.
Rebecca froze.
"Don't answer that.""
I moved toward the front window.
A black SUV was parked outside.
Celeste stood on the porch, wearing the cream-colored coat she had planned to wear on vacation.
She looked immaculate.
Her hair was perfectly styled. Her makeup was flawless. A large designer handbag hung from her shoulder.
She knocked again.
"Andre! Open the door!""
I stepped back.
She rang the bell repeatedly.
"Rebecca, I know you're in there!""
Then her voice softened.
"Please, Andre. I just want to talk.""
I opened the door but kept the security chain fastened.
"What do you want?""
Celeste looked past me.
"Where are the children?""
"Safe.""
"Can I see them?""
"No.""
Her face changed.
"You're not seriously keeping my son from me.""
"Devin is your son. Maya is my daughter. Both children are staying here.""
She lowered her voice.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
"Then explain the trust.""
Her eyes flickered.
"What trust?""
"Rachel's trust. The property. The canceled ticket. The money.""
Celeste's mouth tightened.
"Rebecca has been filling your head with nonsense.""
"Did you try to access Maya's inheritance?""
"I was trying to understand the family's financial situation.""
"Why?""
"Because I'm your wife!""
I stared at her.
"That doesn't give you ownership of my daughter's inheritance.""
Celeste stepped closer to the door.
"Andre, you need to think about what you're doing. We have a home together. We have a life together.""
"Did you marry me because you loved me?""
Her expression changed.
For a split second, I saw something behind her eyes.
Then she laughed.
"Of course I did.""
"Did you know Rachel?""
Celeste went still.
"Don't.""
"Did you know she was dying?""
"Andre, stop.""
"Did you approach me because you knew who I was?""
She looked over her shoulder toward the street.
Then she pushed the door with her palm.
The security chain tightened.
"Open this door.""
"No.""
Her voice became cold.
"You're making yourself look like an unstable man.""
I reached for my phone.
"I'm recording this conversation.""
Celeste stared at the phone.
Then she stepped backward.
"Fine. You want the truth? Let's talk about Rachel.""
I didn't move.
"Go ahead.""
Celeste folded her arms.
"Rachel wasn't some innocent woman. She kept secrets from you. She made financial arrangements behind your back. She knew she was dying, and instead of trusting you, she went behind your back.""
"She was protecting Maya.""
"She was manipulating you!""
The words echoed through the doorway.
Then Celeste said something that made Rebecca gasp behind me.
"Rachel knew exactly what she was doing when she changed that will.""
I stared at her.
"How do you know?""
Celeste realized her mistake.
Her mouth opened, then closed.
"Because she told me.""
Rebecca stepped forward.
"That's a lie.""
Celeste looked past me.
"Stay out of this, Rebecca.""
"Rachel never told you anything about the revised will.""
"You don't know what you're talking about.""
Rebecca picked up the silver recorder.
"Would you like to hear what Rachel recorded?""
Celeste's face drained of color.
For the first time since I'd met her, she looked genuinely frightened.
"Where did you get that?""
I turned toward Rebecca.
She pressed the playback button.
Rachel's voice emerged from the speaker.
"Celeste, I know what you're doing.""
Celeste stared at the device.
When the recording reached her own voice saying, Andre won't believe you. He likes me, she closed her eyes.
I watched her carefully.
"How long have you known about the property?""
She said nothing.
"How long?""
"Since before we got married.""
The admission landed like a punch.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because it wasn't relevant.""
"How did you find it?""
She looked toward Rebecca.
"Rachel's old financial records.""
"And the trust?""
"I never touched it.""
"You tried to access it three times.""
"I was trying to protect the family.""
I laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
"You excluded my daughter from a family vacation, canceled her ticket behind my back, and tried to find a way into her inheritance. How is that protecting the family?""
Celeste's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I was tired, Andre!""
The sudden confession silenced everyone.
She stepped closer.
"Do you know what it's like living in a house where every decision revolves around a child who isn't yours? Every birthday, every holiday, every conversation somehow comes back to Maya and her mother.""
Maya appeared at the top of the stairs.
She had heard everything.
Celeste didn't notice her.
"I wanted one vacation where I didn't have to compete with a dead woman.""
My heart broke for my daughter.
I turned toward the staircase.
"Maya, sweetheart, go upstairs.""
But she didn't move.
She looked directly at Celeste.
"Did you really think Dad would leave me behind?""
Celeste finally noticed her.
Her expression hardened.
"Maya, this is an adult conversation.""
"No. It's about me.""
Maya walked down two steps.
"Did you tell Dad I didn't want to go?""
Celeste said nothing.
"Did you tell Devin not to ask about me?""
Still nothing.
Maya's voice trembled.
"Did you cancel my ticket because you hate me?""
Celeste exhaled sharply.
"I never said I hated you.""
"But you didn't want me there.""
"That's different.""
Maya nodded slowly.
"Not to me.""
Then she turned and went upstairs.
I looked at Celeste.
"Leave.""
"Andre—"
"Leave my sister-in-law's property.""
"You can't just throw away our marriage because of one vacation!""
I removed the security chain.
For a moment, she seemed to think I was going to let her inside.
Instead, I stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind me.
"I'm not ending this marriage because of a vacation, Celeste. I'm ending it because I finally understand what you've been doing to my daughter.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"You'll regret this.""
"Maybe. But I won't regret protecting Maya.""
She walked toward her SUV.
Before getting in, she turned around.
"There's something else you should know.""
I waited.
She smiled without warmth.
"That house in the Poconos? It isn't worth fighting over.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"Rachel borrowed money against it before she died.""
Rebecca appeared in the doorway behind me.
"That's impossible.""
Celeste opened her car door.
"Check the records.""
Then she got inside and drove away.
I turned toward Rebecca.
"Is there a mortgage?""
Rebecca shook her head.
"Rachel paid everything off before she died.""
"Are you certain?""
"Completely.""
We went inside and searched through the property documents.
The deed showed no outstanding mortgage.
But there was something else.
A recorded lien.
It had been filed seven years after Rachel's death.
The claimant was a private investment company.
And the amount was staggering.
*$1,250,000.*
I read the document twice.
Then I noticed the signature at the bottom.
It wasn't Rachel's.
It wasn't mine.
It belonged to someone who had no legal authority over Maya's property.
*Celeste Morgan Bennett.*
I looked at Rebecca.
"How did my wife put a lien on a house she doesn't own?""
Rebecca's face turned pale.
Then she reached into the wooden box and pulled out one final envelope.
"Andre," she whispered, "I think Rachel knew this might happen.""
Inside was a letter from Rachel's attorney.
The first sentence read:
If anyone attempts to place a financial claim against Maya's property, contact the district attorney immediately. The original evidence of the attempted fraud is preserved in the property safe.
I stared at the page.
Then I looked at the children standing at the bottom of the stairs.
Our family vacation had exposed something much bigger than a cruel decision.
Celeste hadn't simply tried to push Maya out of our family.
She had been trying to take something from her.
May you like
And now I was beginning to understand why she had been so desperate to keep Maya away from that house.
Because somewhere inside it was the evidence that could destroy everything Celeste had built.
