Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden Inside the Lake House
The following morning, I sat across from Daniel Foster in his downtown Philadelphia office, staring at a document that had turned my marriage into something I barely recognized.
The fraudulent lien against Rachel's property was real.
The signature was not.
Daniel adjusted his glasses and examined the photocopy again.
"Andre, I'm going to ask you something, and I need you to answer honestly.""
"Go ahead.""
"Did you ever authorize Celeste to act on behalf of Maya's estate?""
"Never.""
"Did you sign any documents allowing her to manage Rachel's property?""
"No.""
"Did you give her access to your daughter's financial accounts?""
"Absolutely not.""
Daniel nodded.
"Then we have a serious problem.""
He turned his monitor toward me.
The lien had been filed through a private lending company called Northstar Capital Partners. According to the public records, the company had issued a loan secured against the property in the Pocono Mountains.
The loan amount was $1.25 million.
The borrower was listed as Celeste Morgan Bennett.
The property owner was listed as Maya Bennett.
I stared at the screen.
"How could they approve a loan against property she didn't own?""
"That's exactly what we need to investigate.""
Daniel opened another document.
"There is also a notarized authorization attached to the filing.""
He enlarged the signature.
My stomach tightened.
It looked like mine.
Not perfectly, but close enough to fool someone who didn't know me.
"That's not my signature.""
"Do you recognize the notary?""
I shook my head.
Daniel leaned back.
"Then we need to obtain the original documents and preserve every record connected to this transaction.""
I thought about Celeste standing on Rebecca's porch the previous night.
You'll regret this.
For the first time, I understood that her confidence hadn't come from believing I would forgive her.
It came from believing I would never discover what she had done.
"What happens now?"" I asked.
"We contact the appropriate authorities, notify the trustee, and file for an emergency injunction preventing any transfer or foreclosure involving Maya's property.""
I nodded.
"Do it.""
Daniel studied me.
"Andre, there's something else. Northstar Capital Partners has a registered business address that may be relevant.""
He turned the monitor again.
The company was registered to a commercial office building in King of Prussia.
The managing director's name was displayed beneath the company information.
*Richard Morgan.*
Celeste's older brother.
I stared at the screen.
"Of course.""
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
"Do you know him?""
"Unfortunately.""
Richard had attended our wedding. He had given a speech about how happy he was that his sister had finally found a stable man.
He had also spent several holidays asking questions about my business, our properties, and our investments.
I had always considered him ambitious.
Now I wondered whether I had been looking at the wrong kind of ambition.
That afternoon, Rebecca drove us to the lake house.
Maya sat in the back seat beside Devin, holding Rachel's photograph.
She hadn't spoken much since the previous evening.
Every so often, she would look at the picture and trace her mother's face with her thumb.
When we reached the property, I understood why Rachel had wanted to keep it.
The house sat beside a quiet lake surrounded by tall pine trees. White shutters framed the windows, and a wooden dock extended into the water.
The place looked untouched by time.
Maya stepped out of the car.
"Mom brought me here?""
Rebecca smiled.
"Every summer, when you were little.""
Maya looked at the house.
"I don't remember.""
"That's okay. Maybe some of it will come back.""
I unlocked the front door using the key Rebecca had brought.
Inside, the air smelled faintly of cedar and old books.
The living room contained a stone fireplace, two faded armchairs, and photographs arranged along the mantel.
There was Rachel holding Maya in the lake.
Rachel laughing in the kitchen.
Rachel sitting on the dock with her feet dangling over the water.
Maya approached one photograph.
"She looks happy.""
"She was," Rebecca whispered.
Devin picked up another frame.
"Why didn't we ever come here?""
Rebecca looked at me.
"Because after Rachel died, Andre thought the property had been sold.""
I stared at the photograph in Maya's hands.
I had been grieving, raising a young daughter, and trying to keep my business alive.
I had trusted the wrong people with information I should have verified myself.
"Let's find the safe," I said.
Rebecca led us to the small office at the back of the house.
A wooden desk stood against the wall. Behind it was a tall bookcase.
She pulled out a blue hardcover book.
Behind the books was a metal safe.
"I remember Rachel saying the combination was important to Maya.""
Maya stepped forward.
"Can I try?""
Rebecca nodded.
Maya looked at the numbers engraved on the dial.
Then she whispered something.
"Mom's birthday.""
She turned the dial.
The lock clicked.
Inside were several folders, a small jewelry box, a flash drive, and a sealed envelope.
I removed the folders first.
The top one contained bank statements.
The second contained copies of financial transfers.
The third was labeled:
*NORTHSTAR CAPITAL — ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.*
My hands went cold.
Inside were emails between Richard Morgan and Celeste.
One message was dated three months before Rachel died.
Richard had written:
The property is worth considerably more than the amount listed in the county records. If you can establish a claim against it, we can refinance and recover the capital.
Celeste replied:
Rachel is still alive. We need to wait.
Richard's response was chilling.
Then make sure your future arrangements are secure. Andre is exactly the kind of man who will sign whatever you put in front of him if you tell him it's for the family.
I read it twice.
Devin stepped closer.
"What does it say?""
I folded the paper.
"Something your aunt and I need to discuss with the attorney.""
But Maya had already seen the names.
"That's Mom's house, isn't it?""
I nodded.
She looked at the documents.
"Why would someone want to take it?""
I crouched beside her.
"Because some people see something valuable and forget that it belongs to someone else.""
She looked toward the lake.
"Mom wanted me to have this?""
"Yes.""
"Then I want to keep it.""
I kissed her forehead.
"You will.""
Rebecca picked up the flash drive.
"There may be more.""
We carried everything to the dining table and opened the files on my laptop.
The flash drive contained scanned documents, voice recordings, and a video.
The video showed Rachel sitting in this very room.
She looked thinner than I remembered. Her hair was shorter, and there were dark circles beneath her eyes.
But she was smiling.
"Hello, Maya.""
My daughter covered her mouth.
Rachel continued.
"If you're watching this, you're old enough to understand why I kept certain things from you.""
She took a breath.
"I want you to know that nothing about what happened was your fault. Not my illness. Not the decisions I made. And certainly not the people who may try to make you feel that you don't belong.""
Maya began crying silently.
Rachel reached toward the camera.
"Sweetheart, you have a home. You have a family. And you never need to give up what belongs to you just to make someone else happy.""
Then Rachel looked directly into the camera.
"And Andre, if you're watching this with her, I need you to look at the next folder.""
The video ended.
I opened the folder.
It contained a series of bank transfers.
The money from Northstar had not gone toward repairing the property.
It had been transferred into an account belonging to Richard Morgan.
The final transaction was dated only four days earlier.
And the amount was exactly $1.25 million.
I stared at the screen.
Celeste hadn't borrowed money against Maya's house to improve it.
She had used my daughter's property to obtain money for her brother.
Then Rebecca noticed another file.
It was a document titled:
*FINAL BENEFICIARY INSTRUCTIONS.*
She opened it.
Her face changed.
"Andre...""
"What?""
She turned the laptop toward me.
At the bottom of the document was a clause Rachel had added before her death.
A clause that explained why Celeste had tried so desperately to gain control of the property.
If Maya's ownership was ever challenged through fraud, the entire estate would automatically trigger an independent legal review.
And every person involved in an unauthorized financial transaction would be named in the complaint.
Rachel had anticipated this.
She had left behind more than an inheritance.
She had left behind a trap for anyone who tried to steal it.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
"Andre, don't go anywhere.""
"What happened?""
"I've just received confirmation that Northstar Capital has filed an emergency foreclosure request.""
I looked at the documents scattered across the table.
"When?""
"Tomorrow morning.""
May you like
Then he added something that made my blood run cold.
"Celeste's brother is claiming that your daughter personally authorized the loan.""
