Chapter 7: The Woman Who Pulled the Trigger

The gunshot left Ethan's ears ringing.

He dropped to his knees and pulled Sophie against his chest, shielding her with his body as the flashlight beam swung wildly across the basement.

"Don't move!"" a man shouted.

Ethan raised one hand.

"I'm unarmed! There's a child here!""

"Put your hands where I can see them!""

"I have a little girl in my arms!""

The beam settled on his face.

A uniformed officer stood at the bottom of the stairs, his weapon aimed at Ethan. Behind him, another officer struggled to rise, blood running from a cut above his eyebrow.

Ethan recognized neither man.

"Where are the officers who came with us?"" he demanded.

"Stay down!""

Sophie buried her face against his chest.

"Please don't let him take me," she whispered.

Ethan tightened his arms around her.

"No one's taking you anywhere.""

The armed officer stepped closer.

"Release the child.""

"Not until you tell me who you are.""

The man raised his weapon.

"Now!""

Then a second flashlight appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Put the gun down, Officer!""

The voice belonged to the lead investigator who had accompanied Ethan from the hospital.

Detective Marcus Hale descended quickly, his weapon drawn.

"Drop it!"" Hale shouted.

The unidentified officer turned.

For a split second, Ethan saw recognition pass between them.

Then the man fired.

Hale ducked behind a concrete pillar. The bullet struck the wall, sending dust into the air.

Ethan covered Sophie's head.

Another shot rang out.

When the echoes faded, the unidentified officer lay on the floor, clutching his shoulder. Hale stood over him, breathing hard.

"Get him secured!"" Hale shouted toward the stairs.

Two additional officers rushed down and handcuffed the wounded man.

Ethan looked around.

"Evelyn?""

Hale shook his head.

"She escaped through an old service passage. We're sealing the property.""

"How did she know about that passage?""

Hale looked toward the man on the floor.

"Because someone gave her the floor plans.""

The wounded officer said nothing.

Hale crouched beside Ethan.

"Are you hurt?""

"No. Sophie is terrified, and my mother just tried to have us killed.""

"We'll discuss that upstairs.""

"Not until you tell me who that man is.""

Hale glanced at his colleagues.

"His name is Daniel Cross. He's a private security contractor employed by the Mercer Foundation.""

Ethan stared at him.

"Mom's security?""

"According to the preliminary records, yes.""

"Then why was he dressed like a police officer?""

Hale's expression hardened.

"That's exactly what we're going to find out.""

Ethan carried Sophie upstairs.

Outside, emergency lights flashed against the trees. Rain tapped the roof of the cottage, and officers moved through the grounds with flashlights.

A paramedic approached Sophie with a blanket.

The little girl refused to release Ethan's hand.

"Can he stay?"" she asked.

The paramedic nodded.

"Of course.""

Ethan sat with her in the back of an ambulance while a medic checked her pulse and examined her arms.

There were bruises around her wrists.

He felt sick.

"Did Evelyn hurt you?"" he asked softly.

Sophie looked at the open ambulance doors.

"She said I was ungrateful.""

"What did she say you were ungrateful for?""

"She said she gave me everything.""

Ethan brushed a strand of hair from Sophie's forehead.

"Nobody has the right to hurt you, no matter what they give you.""

Sophie stared at him.

"Mommy said that.""

His chest tightened.

"Do you remember your mother?""

The little girl nodded.

"She sang to me.""

"What song?""

"Moon River.""

Ethan closed his eyes.

His father had sung that same song to him when he was little.

"Your dad sings it too," he whispered.

Sophie's face crumpled.

"Is Daddy really alive?""

"Yes.""

"Can I see him?""

"He's coming.""

For the first time since the gunshot, Sophie allowed herself to cry.

She didn't sob loudly. She simply pressed her forehead against Ethan's arm and wept as if she'd been holding the tears inside for years.

Ethan stayed still until her breathing slowed.

Then his phone rang.

Natalie.

He answered immediately.

"Tell me Lily is okay.""

"She's okay," Natalie said quickly.

"She's with me. But Ethan, something happened.""

His stomach tightened.

"What?""

"Two people came to the hospital asking for Lily. They said they were sent by Claire's doctor.""

"Did the nurse let them near her?""

"No. She asked for identification, and they left.""

"Did you get their names?""

"One gave the name Thomas Reed. The other didn't speak.""

Ethan stood.

"Call the police. Tell them not to let anyone take Lily without your explicit confirmation and a court order.""

"I already did. Ethan, the nurse recognized the man.""

"From where?""

Natalie's voice dropped.

"He's been in the hospital before. He used to visit your mother.""

Ethan looked toward Detective Hale.

"Someone just tried to take my daughter from the hospital.""

Hale's expression changed.

"Where is she now?""

"With my sister-in-law. Natalie is watching her.""

"Give me the address.""

Ethan did.

Hale immediately radioed for a patrol unit.

Then Ethan asked the question that had been burning inside him since the cottage.

"Detective, did you know my mother was planning to take Sophie?""

"No.""

"Did you know one of your officers was working for her?""

Hale paused.

"I knew the Mercer Foundation had been paying a contractor who used a law-enforcement uniform. I didn't know Cross was involved until tonight.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't have enough evidence to accuse anyone.""

Ethan stepped closer.

"My wife was assaulted, my daughter was threatened, and my sister was held in a basement. How much evidence do you need?""

Hale didn't flinch.

"Enough to make sure the people responsible can't walk away from it.""

He pulled a small recorder from his jacket.

"There's something else. Before the shooting, one of the officers managed to activate his body camera. We recovered footage from the basement.""

Ethan stared at him.

"What does it show?""

Hale hesitated.

"Your mother speaking to Cross before you arrived.""

"About what?""

"About the missing final page of your grandfather's letter.""

Ethan remembered Evelyn's words.

Your father has it.

"Did she say where it was?""

"Yes.""

Hale pressed play.

Evelyn's voice emerged from the small speaker.

"The original is in the family vault. Richard moved it before I could destroy it.""

Cross asked, "And if Ethan finds it?""

Evelyn answered without hesitation.

"Then we make sure he never gets the chance to show it to anyone.""

The recording ended.

Ethan felt cold.

"What family vault?""

Hale studied him.

"Do you know?""

Ethan did.

His grandfather had maintained a private vault beneath the old Mercer estate, a property that now housed the foundation's administrative offices.

Only three people had possessed keys: his grandfather, his father, and Evelyn.

His grandfather was dead.

His father had been held in a private facility.

And Evelyn was on the run.

Hale put the recorder away.

"We're getting a warrant.""

"How long will that take?""

"Several hours, possibly longer.""

Ethan shook his head.

"Then I'm going now.""

Hale stepped in front of him.

"You are not entering that property without law enforcement.""

"My father may have the evidence that explains everything.""

"And your mother may be waiting for you.""

Ethan looked through the ambulance doors at the rain-soaked road.

He had spent his entire life believing that family loyalty meant trusting the people who raised him.

Now he understood that blind loyalty had given Evelyn room to destroy everyone around her.

"I won't go alone," he said.

"But I'm not waiting until morning.""

Hale studied him for a moment.

Then he nodded.

"We leave in ten minutes.""

Before Ethan climbed into the police vehicle, Sophie caught his hand.

"Uncle Ethan?""

He crouched.

"What is it?""

She reached into the pocket of her yellow dress and pulled out a tiny brass key.

"Grandma said I should give this to Daddy if I ever saw him again.""

Ethan stared at it.

"What does it open?""

Sophie shook her head.

"She said it opens the place where the truth sleeps.""

Ethan turned the key over.

A single letter had been engraved into the metal.

M.

The initial of Mercer.

And on the reverse side, almost too small to see, were three numbers.

*101.*

Detective Hale looked at the key.

Then his face went pale.

"That's not the family vault key," he whispered.

Ethan closed his fist around it.

"What is it?""

May you like

Hale stared toward the road.

"It's the key to the room where your grandfather died.""
