Chapter 4: The Father Who Came Back from the Dead
For several seconds, Ethan couldn't speak.
His father stood in the hospital corridor, one hand gripping a wooden cane, his face thinner than Ethan remembered and his eyes sunken beneath heavy lids. A pale scar ran from his left temple toward his hairline.
But it was Richard Mercer.
The man Ethan had buried three years ago.
"Dad?""
Richard's mouth trembled.
"Ethan.""
Ethan took one step forward, then another. His hands rose instinctively, as though he needed to touch his father to prove he wasn't looking at a ghost.
"You were dead.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"I know.""
"No."" Ethan's voice cracked.
"You don't get to say that like it's a simple misunderstanding. I stood beside your grave. I watched them lower your coffin. Mom cried on my shoulder while I promised her we'd get through it together.""
Richard gripped his cane harder.
"I'm sorry.""
"Three years. Three years, Dad!""
His shout echoed through the corridor.
A nurse hurried past, and Dr. Rebecca Shaw stepped between them.
"Mr. Mercer, your father is medically fragile. If you want answers, we need to get him somewhere private.""
Ethan looked at Richard.
"Can you walk?""
"Not very far.""
"Then tell me what happened.""
Richard glanced toward Claire's room.
"Not here.""
"Why? Is someone listening?""
His father's expression answered before his mouth did.
"Yes.""
Ethan felt a chill crawl up his spine.
Richard was afraid.
The man who had taught him to stand up to bullies, who had once confronted an entire board of directors over a dishonest business deal, was standing in a hospital corridor terrified of someone who wasn't even there.
Ethan lowered his voice.
"Is it Mom?""
Richard swallowed.
"Where is Sophie?""
"That's the first thing you asked when you walked in. Where is she?""
"Please, Ethan. Tell me she's safe.""
"How would I know? Until an hour ago, I didn't even know she existed.""
Richard's face crumpled.
"Oh, God.""
He reached for the wall to steady himself.
Rebecca caught his arm.
"Mr. Mercer, you need to sit down.""
"No."" Richard shook his head.
"Not until I know.""
Ethan stepped closer.
"Know what?""
Richard looked directly at him.
"Whether your mother found her.""
Before Ethan could respond, Claire appeared in the doorway of her room, holding Lily.
Richard stared at the baby.
For a moment, something gentle passed over his face.
"She's beautiful," he whispered.
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"Richard, I'm so sorry.""
His expression changed.
"Did Evelyn hurt you?""
Claire nodded.
Richard's hand tightened around his cane until his knuckles whitened.
"I told her this would happen.""
Ethan turned sharply.
"You told her what would happen?""
Richard looked away.
"I told your mother that if she continued threatening people, one day she would go too far.""
"People? Which people?""
Richard's gaze moved toward Lily again.
"Your daughter wasn't supposed to become part of this.""
Ethan felt anger flare through his chest.
"Don't talk about my daughter like she's a piece in some game. My wife was beaten in front of her. Someone photographed us in our bedroom.
My mother knows about a suitcase Claire didn't pack. And now you appear after three years and tell me you're alive.""
He pointed toward his father.
"You're going to explain everything.""
Richard nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Now.""
"Not until Sophie is safe.""
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"Then perhaps you should start by telling me where she is.""
Richard's face went pale.
"I don't know.""
Rebecca led him into a small consultation room. Ethan followed, while Claire remained in her room with Lily and a nurse.
The moment the door closed, Richard sank into a chair.
Rebecca placed a cup of water in front of him.
"How long have you been out of the facility?""
"Six hours.""
"And who helped you leave?""
Richard hesitated.
"A driver.""
"Name?""
"I don't know his real name.""
Rebecca stared at him.
"You disappeared from a secured medical facility, traveled across the county, and arrived here without knowing who transported you?""
"I was given a choice. Stay where I was and wait for Evelyn to finish what she started, or leave.""
"Who gave you that choice?"" Ethan demanded.
Richard looked at his son.
"A woman who said she had proof Sophie was alive.""
Ethan leaned forward.
"Who?""
"She wouldn't give me her name. She told me to come here and ask for Rebecca Shaw.""
Rebecca's face drained of color.
"What did she look like?""
"Dark hair. A scar along her jaw. Perhaps forty years old.""
Rebecca gripped the edge of the desk.
Ethan remembered the photograph he'd found in his mother's locked drawer.
The woman standing beside his father.
The pale scar along her jaw.
"That was Sophie's mother," he said.
Richard looked at him sharply.
"You've seen her?""
"I found a photograph in Mom's study.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"Then Evelyn knows.""
"Knows what?""
Richard leaned forward, lowering his voice.
"Your mother didn't simply hide Sophie. She built an entire false history around her. She paid people to sign statements, arranged for records to be altered, and convinced everyone that Rebecca had stolen the child from a relative.""
"Why?""
"Because Sophie was the heir to something Evelyn believed should belong only to you.""
Ethan stared at him.
"Money?""
Richard shook his head.
"The Mercer estate was established long before you were born. But money wasn't the real issue. Your grandfather placed a condition in his will.""
He paused.
"If I had another child, that child would be entitled to a substantial share of the family trust.""
Ethan frowned.
"You had Sophie before Grandpa died?""
"Yes. Rebecca and I were together long before I met Evelyn. When Rebecca became pregnant, I was young, frightened, and already under pressure from my family.
I promised to take responsibility for the baby. Then I met Evelyn.""
"And you abandoned them?""
Richard looked down.
"I let fear make decisions for me. I convinced myself I could protect Rebecca and Sophie by keeping them separate from my life. I sent money.
I visited secretly. I told myself that was enough.""
"That wasn't protection. It was cowardice.""
"I know.""
Richard didn't argue.
That somehow made Ethan angrier.
"Then why did Mom have to fake your death?""
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I finally decided to tell the truth.""
He explained that, three years earlier, he had informed Evelyn he intended to amend his estate documents, publicly acknowledge Sophie, and restore Rebecca's legal rights.
Evelyn had smiled, poured him a glass of water, and told him they would discuss it after dinner.
He remembered waking in a private hospital room days later, unable to move his right leg properly, with a doctor explaining that he had suffered a severe neurological event.
When he asked to see Ethan, Evelyn told him his son had been informed of his death and was too distraught to visit.
She showed him a newspaper obituary.
A photograph of his own grave.
And a copy of his death certificate.
"She made you believe you were dead?"" Ethan whispered.
"She made everyone believe it. I was transferred under a different name. I couldn't walk without assistance, and my speech was impaired. By the time I understood what had happened, the facility had been instructed not to allow visitors.""
"Why didn't you call the police?""
"I tried. My phone calls were monitored. The first time I managed to reach someone outside, Evelyn sent a lawyer who convinced the authorities I was confused and mentally incompetent.""
Richard rubbed his face.
"I was weak, Ethan. And ashamed. I had spent years hiding from my own responsibilities. When I finally tried to correct my mistakes, I discovered how much damage my silence had caused.""
Ethan stood beside the window, staring at the parking lot below.
His father had been alive while Ethan delivered a eulogy.
Alive while Evelyn accepted condolences.
Alive while the family gathered around an empty coffin.
"Did you know Mom attacked Claire today?""
"No.""
"Did you know someone threatened Lily?""
Richard looked horrified.
"No.""
"Then how do you know Sophie is in danger?""
Richard reached inside his coat and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
It was a photograph of Sophie standing beside the blue house.
On the back, someone had written a message.
*One child disappeared because of you. Don't let the next one follow her.*
Ethan stared at the words.
Richard's voice trembled.
"That message was delivered to me yesterday. Whoever sent it knew I was alive.""
Rebecca took the photograph and examined it.
"Who else knew you had escaped?""
"Only the driver and the woman who contacted me.""
"Then one of them may be working with Evelyn.""
A sudden knock interrupted them.
A uniformed officer opened the door.
"Mr. Mercer? We need to speak with you immediately.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"About what?""
The officer looked at Richard.
"Your mother has been released from questioning pending further investigation. She left the house less than an hour ago.""
"So?""
The officer hesitated.
"Her vehicle was found abandoned near the interstate. There was blood on the driver's seat, and witnesses report seeing a woman matching her description get into a black SUV.""
Ethan felt his stomach drop.
"Was she injured?""
"We don't know.""
The officer glanced at the photograph in Rebecca's hand.
"But we found something else in her car.""
He reached into a folder and removed a small silver bracelet.
An engraved letter caught the light.
R.
Richard stared at it.
Then he began to shake.
"That's Sophie's bracelet.""
Ethan looked from the bracelet to his father.
"How could Mom have that?""
Richard's lips parted.
May you like
His voice came out barely audible.
"Because she found Sophie first.""
