Chapter 3: The Daughter Who Was Erased

Ethan returned to the hospital with Lily strapped into her car seat and the photographs tucked inside his jacket.

He hadn't told the police about the phone call.

He hadn't told Evelyn.

And he hadn't told Claire that the girl in the yellow dress appeared in a family photograph taken fourteen years earlier.

He needed the truth before he allowed anyone else to shape it for him.

The hospital corridor smelled of antiseptic and burnt coffee. Nurses moved between rooms while a television murmured in the waiting area.

When Ethan reached Claire's room, he found her sitting upright in bed, a bandage wrapped around her head.

Her face softened when she saw Lily.

"Can I hold her?""

Ethan hesitated.

Then he lifted their daughter from the car seat and placed her gently in Claire's arms.

Claire pressed her lips against Lily's forehead.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"I'm so sorry.""

Ethan stood beside the bed.

"Who is the girl?""

Claire closed her eyes.

"Her name is Sophie.""

"Who is she?""

Claire looked down at the baby.

"She's your sister.""

The words hung between them.

Ethan took a step backward.

"No.""

"I'm sorry.""

"No, that's impossible. I'm an only child.""

"That's what Evelyn wanted you to believe.""

He stared at his wife.

"You're telling me my father had another daughter?""

"Yes.""

"And you knew?""

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I found out three years ago.""

Ethan turned toward the window, struggling to understand how a secret that large could have existed inside his family without him ever noticing.

His father had attended every school event. He'd taught Ethan to drive, helped him move into his first apartment, and stood beside him at his wedding.

Richard had seemed incapable of hiding anything from his only son.

Yet he'd apparently hidden an entire child.

"Who was her mother?"" Ethan asked.

"Rebecca Shaw.""

"The doctor?""

Claire nodded.

"She wasn't a doctor when I met her. She was a nurse at St. Catherine's.

Sophie was being treated there after an accident. Rebecca came to me because she recognized my last name.""

Ethan sat down heavily.

"What kind of accident?""

Claire rubbed Lily's tiny back.

"She'd fallen down the stairs at the blue house.""

"Your mother's house?""

"No. Rebecca's.""

Claire paused.

"At least, that's what she told everyone.""

Ethan leaned forward.

"Claire, stop talking around it. Tell me what happened.""

She looked toward the closed door.

Then she began.

Three years earlier, Claire had been working a night shift at St. Catherine's when an eight-year-old girl arrived in the emergency department with a fractured wrist and a head injury.

The child's name was Sophie Shaw.

She had been brought in by Rebecca, who claimed to be her mother.

But when Claire helped remove Sophie's coat, she noticed a small silver bracelet around the girl's wrist.

The bracelet bore a single engraved letter.

R.

Claire had seen the same bracelet in an old photograph of Richard Mercer.

It had belonged to his mother.

Claire initially thought it was a coincidence. Then Sophie woke from sedation and asked whether her father was coming.

Rebecca had tried to silence her.

But the girl had looked directly at Claire and whispered, "My daddy's name is Richard. Grandma Evelyn says I'm not allowed to tell anyone.""

Claire stopped the story there.

Ethan stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I tried to find out whether it was true first.""

"You could have asked me.""

"I did ask you about your father's old photographs. You said he never kept anything from his childhood.""

"Because I believed that!""

"I know.""

"Then what happened?""

Claire looked down at Lily.

"Rebecca showed me a birth certificate. Richard's name was on it. She said he had visited Sophie secretly for years and promised to take her away from Evelyn when the time was right.""

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

"My father never mentioned another daughter.""

"Rebecca said he was afraid.""

"Afraid of my mother?""

Claire nodded.

"She controlled his money, his appointments, his medications. She knew who called him and who visited. Rebecca believed Evelyn had threatened to destroy her life if she ever tried to make Sophie part of the family.""

Ethan thought about his father during his final year.

The canceled lunches.

The unanswered phone calls.

The way Evelyn had insisted Richard was too tired to see friends.

He had assumed grief and age were changing his father.

Now those memories looked different.

"Why did you keep this from me for three years?"" he asked.

"Because the day after I found out, Rebecca disappeared.""

"Disappeared?""

"She called me and said someone had been inside her house. Sophie's things were gone. The photographs were gone. She was terrified.""

"And you didn't tell the police?""

"I did. They found no evidence of a crime. Rebecca later told them she had moved away voluntarily.""

"Where is she now?""

"I don't know.""

Ethan stood.

"That's convenient.""

Claire flinched.

He immediately regretted his tone, but the anger had nowhere to go.

"You expect me to believe that my mother hid a child, my father had a secret family, and you spent three years investigating them without telling me?""

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds like you made a decision about my life without giving me the chance to choose.""

Claire's eyes shone.

"You're right.""

Her answer disarmed him.

She didn't defend herself.

She didn't blame his mother.

She simply held Lily closer.

"I was wrong not to tell you. I thought I could find Sophie first. I thought if I brought you proof, you wouldn't have to choose between your father and your mother.""

"I wouldn't have chosen my mother over a child.""

"I know that now.""

Ethan stared at her.

"Then why were you leaving tomorrow?""

Claire looked toward the doorway.

"Because I received a message yesterday.""

She reached for the bedside table and picked up her phone.

The screen showed a photograph of Lily's nursery window.

Taken from outside.

Below it was a message.

*You have until Friday to disappear, or the baby gets the same treatment as Sophie.*

Ethan felt the room tilt.

"When did you get this?""

"Yesterday morning.""

"Why didn't you call the police?""

"I did. They said there wasn't enough information to identify the sender.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Claire's voice broke.

"Because the next message included a picture of you sleeping.""

She turned the phone toward him.

The photograph showed Ethan lying beside Claire in their bedroom.

It had been taken from the doorway.

He remembered that night.

He'd been exhausted after working late, and Claire had gone downstairs to prepare a bottle for Lily.

Someone had been inside their house.

Someone close enough to photograph him while he slept.

Ethan looked at his wife.

"Did you tell anyone about the tickets?""

"Only Natalie. She arranged them.""

"Then why did Mom know?""

Claire swallowed.

"Because someone sent her the same photograph of Lily.""

A knock sounded at the door.

Dr. Rebecca Shaw entered, carrying a thick folder.

She closed the door behind her and looked at Ethan.

"I'm sorry about the interruption earlier.""

Ethan rose.

"Tell me the truth about my father.""

Rebecca placed the folder on the bedside table.

"Richard was Sophie's biological father. He acknowledged her privately, but he never completed the legal process to establish his paternity publicly.""

"Why?""

"Because Evelyn threatened Rebecca.""

"What did she threaten her with?""

Rebecca looked at Claire before answering.

"She threatened to accuse Rebecca of kidnapping Sophie. She had already obtained forged documents claiming the child had been taken from a relative.""

Ethan shook his head.

"My mother wouldn't do that.""

Rebecca's expression remained steady.

"I treated Sophie after the accident. I also treated your father during his final admission. I know what Evelyn told the hospital staff, and I know what she ordered us not to record.""

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

"What did she order you not to record?""

Rebecca opened the folder.

Inside were photocopies of medical reports, handwritten notes, and a photograph of Richard lying in a hospital bed.

"Your father was admitted three years ago after a collapse. His condition was serious, but he was conscious. He asked repeatedly to see Sophie.""

Ethan looked at the date.

Three years earlier.

His father's death had been officially recorded as a heart attack that same week.

"Why are you showing me this?""

"Because your father didn't die when your mother told you he did.""

The silence that followed was absolute.

Ethan stared at her.

"What?""

Rebecca pulled out another document.

A discharge summary.

Richard Mercer's name.

A date six days after the reported time of death.

Ethan grabbed the paper.

"This says he was discharged.""

"He was transferred to a private care facility under an assumed patient designation," Rebecca explained.

"The records were later altered. I discovered the discrepancy only after your wife began asking questions.""

"Where is he now?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"I don't know.""

Ethan looked at Claire.

She was crying silently, but she wasn't surprised.

That frightened him more than anything else.

"You knew my father might be alive?""

"I knew there was a possibility," Claire whispered.

"I never had proof.""

Ethan stepped away from the bed.

His mother had attacked his wife. Someone had threatened his infant daughter. A little girl he had never known existed had been erased from his family history.

And now a hospital doctor was telling him his father might still be alive.

"Why would Evelyn tell me he was dead?""

Rebecca's answer came quietly.

"Because Richard had something she wanted. Something he refused to give her.""

"What?""

Before Rebecca could answer, the hospital room door opened.

A nurse hurried inside.

"Dr. Shaw, I'm sorry, but there's a situation downstairs.""

Rebecca turned.

"What situation?""

"An elderly man has arrived in the emergency department. He gave us a name that matches a patient in your file.""

Ethan's heart began to pound.

Rebecca went pale.

"What name?""

The nurse glanced at the paperwork in her hands.

"Richard Mercer.""

Ethan couldn't move.

For three years, he had visited his father's grave.

For three years, he had placed flowers beside a headstone bearing Richard's name.

For three years, he had believed he was mourning a dead man.

Rebecca gripped the doorframe.

Then she turned back toward Ethan.

"There's something else you need to know before you see him.""

Ethan's voice came out barely above a whisper.

"What?""

Rebecca looked at Lily, then at Claire.

"Richard didn't come here alone.""

A man's voice sounded from the corridor.

Weak.

Ragged.

But unmistakably familiar.

"Ethan?""

Ethan stumbled toward the door.

His father stood outside, leaning heavily on a cane, his silver hair longer than Ethan remembered and his face hollow with age.

For one impossible second, neither man moved.

Then Richard looked past his son toward the hospital bed.

His eyes settled on Claire.

And the first words out of his mouth were not an explanation.

May you like

They were a warning.

"Where is Sophie?""
