Chapter 5: The Woman in the Black SUV
The bracelet lay inside a clear evidence bag on the consultation room table.
Ethan couldn't stop looking at it.
The silver was scratched, and the clasp had been repaired with a tiny piece of wire. He remembered seeing it in the photograph of the blue house. He remembered the little girl in the yellow dress.
Now he knew that girl was his sister.
And his mother had apparently been close enough to take her bracelet.
"Where was the car found?"" Ethan asked.
The officer consulted his notes.
"Approximately twelve miles from the interstate exit. The vehicle was unlocked. There were no signs of a collision.""
"Was there blood?""
"Yes. A small amount on the driver's seat.""
"How much?""
"Not enough to establish the severity of an injury.""
Ethan looked at his father.
Richard had gone frighteningly still.
"Tell me what you're thinking," Ethan demanded.
Richard shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"That's not good enough.""
"Your mother has threatened Rebecca before. She has threatened Sophie. She has threatened me. But she has never left evidence like this.""
Rebecca folded her arms.
"Unless she wants us to believe she's been attacked.""
Richard looked at her.
"Why would she do that?""
"Because while everyone searches for her, she has time to move someone else.""
Ethan's phone rang.
Natalie.
He answered immediately.
"Natalie, where are you?""
"At home. Why?""
"Did you arrange Claire's tickets?""
"Yes. She asked me to help her leave before tomorrow morning.""
"Did you tell my mother?""
"No! Ethan, what's happening?""
He lowered his voice.
"Mom's missing.""
Natalie fell silent.
Then she asked, "Did you find the blue house photograph?""
"Yes.""
"Then you need to understand something. Claire wasn't planning to run away from you. She was trying to get Lily out before Evelyn could reach her.""
"I know that now.""
"Do you? Because Claire called me last night crying so hard I could barely understand her. She said Evelyn had shown up at your house and told her that if she didn't leave voluntarily, she would make sure you lost custody of Lily.""
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Why didn't Claire tell me?""
"Because Evelyn threatened to accuse her of being unstable. She had copies of Claire's medical records and photographs of her crying after childbirth. She said she'd make you believe Claire was dangerous.""
"That's insane.""
"Maybe. But your mother has money, lawyers, and people who do what she asks.""
Ethan thought of the suitcase.
The cash.
The tickets.
The birth certificate.
It hadn't been a plan to abandon him.
It had been an emergency escape route.
"Did Claire tell you who packed the bag?""
"No. She said she'd been collecting things over several weeks, but she hadn't put everything together. Someone else must have finished packing it.""
"Who had access to our house?""
"Your mother. You gave her a key, remember?""
Ethan remembered.
After Lily was born, Evelyn had insisted that every new parent needed help. She had brought meals, folded laundry, and volunteered to watch the baby.
He'd thought it was kindness.
Now he remembered how often she'd entered rooms without knocking, how she had questioned Claire about every phone call, and how she once stood in the nursery doorway for several minutes while Lily slept.
"Did you see anyone at the blue house?"" he asked.
Natalie hesitated.
"Not in person. But three years ago, Claire sent me a photograph of a woman standing outside the house. She said she thought someone was watching Sophie.""
"Can you send it to me?""
"I'll try.""
A moment later, Ethan received the image.
A woman stood beside a black SUV.
Dark hair.
Pale scar along her jaw.
Rebecca Shaw examined the photograph over his shoulder.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
"That's me.""
Ethan turned toward her.
"What?""
"I was visiting Sophie that day. I wasn't supposed to be there. Someone took a photograph of me, and I assumed it was Evelyn's lawyer.""
"Why would you assume that?""
"Because he'd been following me for weeks.""
Richard pushed himself upright.
"Rebecca, you never told me that.""
"You were already in the facility. I couldn't risk making things worse.""
Ethan looked at the photograph again.
The SUV's license plate was partially visible.
Rebecca zoomed in on the image.
"I think I recognize the vehicle.""
"Whose is it?""
"One of the cars used by the Mercer Foundation.""
Ethan stared at her.
His family foundation.
The charitable organization his mother chaired, which funded children's hospitals, scholarships, and community programs.
His father had established it decades earlier.
"Why would the foundation be involved?""
Richard looked away.
"Because Evelyn used it to pay for the private facility where I was kept.""
Ethan felt sick.
His mother's charity had funded the place where his father was held against his will.
And perhaps it had also funded whatever happened to Sophie.
The officer interrupted them.
"We've checked the vehicle registration. The SUV belongs to a company contracted by the Mercer Foundation.""
"Who was driving it?"" Ethan asked.
"We're working on that.""
"Then work faster.""
The officer's expression hardened.
"Mr. Mercer, I understand you're upset, but this is an active investigation.""
"My mother is missing, my sister may be missing, and someone has threatened my infant daughter. I'm beyond upset.""
Richard gripped his son's arm.
"Ethan, listen to me. If Evelyn has Sophie, she won't keep her at the blue house.""
"Why not?""
"Because Rebecca knows the property. It's the first place anyone would search.""
Rebecca shook her head.
"Then where would she take her?""
Richard stared at the bracelet.
"There was another house.""
"Where?"" Ethan demanded.
"An old cottage on the coast. Your grandfather owned it. After he died, Evelyn sold most of the property, but the cottage remained in a separate trust.""
"Who controls the trust?""
Richard hesitated.
"I did.""
"Then how could Mom use it?""
"She had my power of attorney while I was incapacitated.""
Rebecca looked furious.
"She could have transferred the property without your knowledge?""
"Yes.""
Ethan paced toward the window.
"Do you know the address?""
Richard nodded.
"Outside a town called Bellhaven. About four hours from here.""
The officer immediately requested the information, then stepped outside to contact his team.
Ethan turned to Rebecca.
"Could Sophie be there?""
"Possibly.""
"Could my mother be taking her there right now?""
"Possibly.""
"Then why are we still standing here?""
Rebecca placed a hand on his arm.
"Because we don't know whether Evelyn has Sophie, whether she's injured, or whether this is a trap. We need to coordinate with the police.""
Ethan hated that she was right.
His instinct was to jump into the car and drive until he found his sister.
But he had Lily to protect.
And Claire was still recovering from an assault.
He returned to his wife's room.
Claire was asleep, one hand resting on Lily's blanket. A nurse sat nearby, monitoring her condition.
Ethan sat beside the bed and took Claire's hand.
When she opened her eyes, she looked frightened.
"What's happened?""
"Mom's disappeared.""
Claire tried to sit up.
"Evelyn?""
"Her car was found abandoned. They discovered Sophie's bracelet inside.""
Claire's face went white.
"Then she has her.""
"We don't know that yet.""
"Yes, we do.""
Ethan leaned forward.
"Claire, why didn't you tell me everything when this started?""
She swallowed.
"Because I was afraid you'd think I was trying to destroy your family.""
"My family was already broken. You were trying to save our daughter.""
Claire's eyes filled.
"I didn't want Lily to grow up believing her grandmother hated her.""
Ethan looked at their baby.
"I think we're past that.""
Claire gave a weak, bitter laugh.
Then she reached for her phone.
"There is something else.""
"What?""
She opened an email and showed him a message received two days earlier.
The sender's address was unfamiliar.
The subject line read: *SOPHIE'S REAL MOTHER.*
The email contained a photograph of a woman sitting in a small room with barred windows.
She looked exhausted, with gray streaks in her dark hair and the same scar along her jaw.
Beneath the photograph was a short message.
*If you want to know what happened to Sophie, find the woman who never left the blue house.*
Ethan stared at the screen.
"Who sent this?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you reply?""
"Yes.""
"What did they say?""
Claire scrolled down.
The final message was timestamped less than an hour before Evelyn's attack.
*Your mother-in-law knows where Rebecca is. She always has. Ask her why she buried two women to protect one lie.*
Ethan looked toward the corridor.
Rebecca stood outside the room, speaking to a police officer.
He had assumed she was a hospital doctor helping his wife.
But the scarred woman in the photograph had been described as Sophie's mother.
And Rebecca had just identified herself as the woman in the black SUV.
Ethan walked into the hallway.
"Dr. Shaw?""
Rebecca turned.
"Yes?""
He held up the phone.
"Who is Rebecca Shaw?""
Her face drained of color.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she looked toward Claire's room.
"I think it's time you learned why my name is in those records.""
She reached into her pocket and removed an old driver's license.
The photograph showed a woman with dark hair and a scar along her jaw.
The name printed beneath it was different.
*Rebecca Mercer.*
Ethan stared at the license.
Rebecca's voice trembled.
"That was my name before your father married Evelyn.""
The hallway seemed to tilt.
"You were with my father?""
Rebecca nodded.
"And Sophie is your daughter?""
"Yes.""
Ethan stepped backward.
"But Claire said you disappeared.""
"I did. After Evelyn threatened to take Sophie away, I changed my name and tried to start over. Richard helped me when he could, but he was too afraid to acknowledge us publicly.""
"Then who is Dr. Rebecca Shaw?""
The woman looked at him with exhausted eyes.
"Someone who has spent three years trying to find her daughter.""
Before Ethan could respond, the officer's radio crackled.
A dispatcher spoke urgently.
"Possible sighting of the missing Mercer vehicle. Black SUV, heading toward Bellhaven. One occupant observed in the rear passenger seat.""
The officer grabbed his radio.
"Was the passenger identified?""
The reply came through in a burst of static.
Then a voice answered.
"Negative. But the witness reports the passenger appeared to be a young girl wearing a yellow dress.""
Richard appeared in the doorway behind Ethan.
His face crumpled.
"Sophie.""
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Ethan took a breath.
Then the dispatcher delivered the final detail.
"The vehicle was last seen entering the grounds of the old Mercer coastal cottage. All units, proceed with caution.""
Richard grabbed Ethan's arm.
"Don't let them take her inside.""
"Why?""
His father looked toward the window, as though he could see the distant coast.
"Because that cottage has a basement.""
May you like
He swallowed hard.
"And your grandfather sealed it after the night your grandmother died.""
