Chapter 9: His Mother's Final Betrayal

I had always thought of Eleanor Mercer as a difficult woman.

Not cruel.

Not dangerous.

Just difficult.

She had never liked me.

At our wedding, she complained about the flowers. At Christmas, she criticized my cooking. When I announced my pregnancy, she asked whether I was certain the timing was convenient.

Mark always defended her.

"She's from another generation, Sarah. Don't take everything personally.""

I tried.

I really did.

I sent her birthday cards, invited her to dinner, and bought her a beautiful cashmere scarf for Christmas.

She thanked me once.

Then she told Mark I was trying too hard.

Now Richard was telling us she had helped plan the financial fraud and the attempt to control my daughter.

"You're sure?"" David asked.

Richard nodded.

"She attended several meetings with Victor. She helped Mark prepare the family trust documents.""

I felt numb.

"Why would she do that?""

Richard looked at me.

"Because Eleanor believes everything Mark owns should remain under the Mercer family name.""

David leaned back.

"That doesn't explain the forged documents.""

"No. But it explains why she was willing to participate.""

Richard removed another paper.

It was a bank transfer.

The recipient was Eleanor Mercer.

The amount was seventy-five thousand dollars.

The reference read:

Family restructuring consultation.

I stared at it.

"She was paid?""

"Yes.""

"For what?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"She helped arrange the introduction to the attorney who prepared the custody documents.""

My chest tightened.

"She helped him take my baby?""

Richard didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Detective Harris took the document.

"We'll investigate the payment.""

After the interview, James arranged for Richard to provide a formal statement.

The police also agreed to review the original hospital records and financial evidence.

But as we left the station, my phone rang.

Eleanor.

I stared at the screen.

David noticed.

"Don't answer.""

"I want to hear what she says.""

He hesitated.

"Sarah, you don't owe her anything.""

"I know. But I want to understand why.""

David finally nodded.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Sarah, darling.""

Her voice sounded exactly as it always had.

Smooth.

Polite.

Completely unaffected.

"I've been trying to reach you.""

"What do you want, Eleanor?""

She sighed.

"There's no need to be hostile. Mark tells me you've been staying with your brother and making some rather serious accusations.""

I looked at David.

He motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

"Mark hit me," I said.

A pause.

Then Eleanor responded.

"Your husband has always been under considerable stress.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"He slapped me in front of a maternity clinic.""

"I'm sure there was a misunderstanding.""

"There wasn't.""

Eleanor sighed again.

"Sarah, you're seven months pregnant. Emotions can become overwhelming. You should be careful about making accusations you'll regret.""

I almost laughed.

Even now, she was repeating the same story Mark had created.

"Did you help him prepare the custody documents?""

Silence.

Then she spoke.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"Did you receive seventy-five thousand dollars from Victor Hale?""

Another silence.

I heard a faint sound in the background.

A door closing.

Then Eleanor's voice became colder.

"Who told you that?""

"Does it matter?""

"Yes. It matters very much.""

David leaned closer to the phone.

"Eleanor, this is David.""

She exhaled sharply.

"Of course. The brother who has always wanted to destroy my son's life.""

David remained calm.

"Your son's financial records suggest you were paid to help prepare fraudulent custody documents.""

"That's an outrageous accusation.""

"Then you'll have no problem explaining the payment to the authorities.""

Her voice rose.

"You have no idea what Mark has sacrificed for that family.""

I looked at the phone.

"What family?""

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she said something I would never forget.

"The Mercer name must survive. You were always supposed to understand that.""

My throat tightened.

"Was I supposed to understand that my inheritance belonged to you?""

"You were fortunate Mark chose you.""

I stared at the phone.

"Fortunate?""

"Mark could have married anyone. He gave you a beautiful home, financial security, and a family.""

"I paid for that home with my inheritance.""

"Your inheritance was a gift. It was never enough to support the lifestyle you expected.""

David's expression darkened.

I continued.

"Did you know he was planning to take my daughter?""

Eleanor said nothing.

"Did you know about the medical authorization?""

"Mark is the child's father. He has rights.""

"So do I.""

"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""

I closed my eyes.

For three years, I had tried to earn this woman's approval.

I had mistaken her silence for disapproval I could fix.

Now I understood.

She had never wanted me to belong.

She had wanted what I brought into the marriage.

My inheritance.

My house.

And the child who would carry her family name.

"Goodbye, Eleanor.""

I ended the call.

David gently squeezed my shoulder.

"Are you okay?""

I nodded.

But I wasn't.

Not really.

An hour later, Detective Harris called.

"We've located Victor Hale.""

David stood.

"Where?""

"At his private residence. Officers are speaking with him.""

"Has he been arrested?""

"Not yet. We're reviewing the evidence.""

Then she added something unexpected.

"We also located Patricia Wells.""

"Where is she?""

"At Mercer Women's Surgical Center.""

My stomach dropped.

"Is she still working there?""

"She was when officers arrived.""

"Did she admit anything?""

"She denied receiving payments. But we found financial records connecting her to Victor's company.""

I gripped the phone.

"Can she still access my records?""

"No. The facility has been instructed to suspend her access while the investigation continues.""

David asked whether the police had recovered the original hospital files.

"Yes," Detective Harris replied.

"And we've found something that may be important.""

"What?""

"An unsigned agreement between Mark Mercer and Eleanor Mercer.""

I sat down.

"What agreement?""

Detective Harris paused.

"It concerns your daughter.""

She sent a copy to James.

A few seconds later, his email notification appeared.

He opened the attachment.

The document was titled:

*MERCER FAMILY LEGACY TRUST.*

It named Mark as the primary trustee.

Eleanor was listed as the secondary trustee.

And our unborn daughter was listed as the beneficiary.

But the document also contained a clause stating that if I died during childbirth or was declared medically incapable of caring for the child, Eleanor would become the child's legal guardian until further court proceedings.

I stared at the page.

"She planned to raise my daughter?""

James nodded grimly.

"That's what the document appears to establish.""

Then David noticed something.

The trust had been created before Mark and I married.

The original beneficiary wasn't our unborn daughter.

It was another child.

A child whose name had been crossed out and replaced with mine.

I leaned closer.

"Who was it?""

James enlarged the document.

The original name was still partially visible beneath the black mark.

*Lily Mercer.*

I looked at David.

"Who is Lily?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

But then my phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A young woman's voice came through.

"Sarah Collins?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Lily.""

I stopped breathing.

She continued.

"I think you need to know what happened to the last woman Mark married.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"What woman?""

There was a long pause.

Then Lily whispered:

"My mother.""

I looked at David.

His expression changed as he heard the name.

Lily continued.

"She died eleven years ago. Everyone said it was an accident.""

My stomach turned.

"Why are you calling me?""

"Because I found the original trust documents. And because my grandmother just told me something she was never supposed to say.""

"What?""

Lily's voice cracked.

"Your husband didn't choose you because he loved you, Sarah.""

I felt cold.

"Then why did he marry me?""

"Because your inheritance was supposed to pay for the same plan he tried to use on my mother.""

A sob escaped her throat.

"And if you want to know what really happened to her, you need to look at the insurance claim from the night she died.""

I stared at the document on James's laptop.

The original beneficiary.

The crossed-out name.

The family trust.

May you like

Then Lily said the words that changed everything.

"Sarah, my mother was also seven months pregnant when she died.""
