Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I read Vanessa's message three times.
Each time, the words seemed more impossible.
He said you wouldn't be bringing her home.
I looked at David.
"What does that mean?""
He took the phone from my hand.
"I don't know yet.""
"Why would she say something like that?""
"Because she either knows something important, or she's trying to frighten you.""
He immediately called his attorney.
"James, we need an emergency review of Sarah's medical authorization records. Someone has added an unauthorized person to her file.""
He paused.
"Yes. The assistant. Vanessa Reed.""
I stood abruptly.
"David, I need to speak to her.""
"No.""
"She might know something about the baby.""
"And she might be working with Mark.""
"I don't care. I need answers.""
David studied my face.
Then he nodded.
"All right. But the conversation happens here, with witnesses, and we record it if the law allows.""
Ten minutes later, Vanessa entered the living room.
She looked nothing like the confident woman I remembered.
Her blonde hair was tied back carelessly. Her expensive handbag hung from one shoulder, and her eyes were red.
She stopped when she saw me.
"Oh, Sarah.""
I remained seated.
"Why is your name on my medical authorization?""
Vanessa glanced at David.
"I didn't put it there.""
"Then who did?""
"Mark.""
David crossed his arms.
"Why would my sister's husband authorize his assistant to make medical decisions?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because he said Sarah couldn't be trusted to make decisions after the baby was born.""
My stomach twisted.
"Why would he say that?""
"He told me she was becoming unstable. That she had been forgetting things and having emotional episodes.""
I stared at her.
"Did you believe him?""
She looked down.
"I did at first.""
"At first?""
Vanessa placed her handbag on the floor.
"Then I saw the documents.""
David pulled out a chair.
"Sit down. Start from the beginning.""
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"I've worked for Mark for four years. When he hired me, he was charming. He paid well and treated everyone like family. But after he started discussing the Mercer Holdings arrangement, things changed.""
"What arrangement?"" I asked.
"The company that was supposed to own your house and manage your inheritance.""
I felt sick.
Vanessa continued.
"He told me he was restructuring the family assets. I prepared several documents for his accountant. At first, they seemed normal. Then he asked me to backdate some signatures.""
David's voice sharpened.
"Whose signatures?""
"Sarah's. And yours.""
I looked at my brother.
He didn't move.
Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"I copied some of the paperwork before he could destroy it.""
She placed it on the coffee table.
Inside were printed emails, financial forms, and photographs of documents.
David began examining them.
One email immediately caught his attention.
The subject line read:
*PROJECT RESET — FINAL APPROVAL REQUIRED.*
The sender was Mark.
The recipient was Richard Cole, his accountant.
The email read:
Once Sarah signs the transfer, the house becomes an asset of Mercer Holdings. The equity can be released immediately. Her brother's involvement must be prevented until the transaction is complete.
David read it twice.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"What is Project Reset?""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
"I don't know everything.""
"Tell us what you know.""
She took a breath.
"Mark was planning to sell the house after transferring it into the company. He wanted the money moved through two other businesses before anyone could trace it.""
"How much money?"" David asked.
"Approximately eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the home-equity loan, plus whatever remained in Sarah's inheritance.""
I gripped the edge of the sofa.
"Where is my inheritance now?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Most of it was transferred into a business account last year.""
"Which business?""
"Northbridge Consulting.""
David immediately wrote down the name.
I felt tears gathering.
"My parents left that money for me.""
"I know," Vanessa whispered.
"No, you don't. My father worked two jobs for years. My mother saved every dollar she could. That money was supposed to help me and my child.""
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
I wanted to scream at her.
Instead, I asked the question that mattered most.
"Why did you come here?""
She looked at me.
"Because yesterday, Mark told me to prepare another document.""
"What document?""
"A parental custody authorization.""
My blood turned cold.
David stepped closer.
"Explain.""
Vanessa pulled another paper from the envelope.
It was a draft agreement.
The title read:
*TEMPORARY CHILDCARE AND CUSTODIAL AUTHORIZATION.*
My name appeared at the top.
Mark's name appeared beneath it.
And a third name was listed as the designated caregiver.
Vanessa Reed.
I stared at her.
"Why are you listed?""
She shook her head quickly.
"I never agreed to take custody of your baby. Mark told me it was just temporary paperwork in case you experienced complications during delivery.""
"Did you sign it?""
"No.""
"Then why does it have a signature?""
Vanessa looked terrified.
"Because Mark told me he had already submitted the final version.""
David picked up the document.
"Did you keep the original email?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
Vanessa opened her handbag again and removed a small USB drive.
"Everything is here.""
David called James, his attorney, and asked him to come over immediately.
While we waited, I walked to the window.
Outside, the neighborhood was quiet.
A little girl rode her bicycle along the sidewalk while her father followed behind her.
I watched them for a long moment.
I imagined bringing my daughter home.
I imagined her first steps, her first birthday, her tiny hands wrapping around my fingers.
Then I remembered Mark's message.
You wouldn't be bringing her home.
I turned around.
"Vanessa, did Mark ever say anything about me dying?""
She went completely still.
David looked up.
"Vanessa?""
Her eyes filled.
"He said something once.""
"What?""
"About the delivery.""
I stepped toward her.
"Tell me.""
She wiped her cheek.
"Three weeks ago, Mark was on the phone with Richard. I brought him some paperwork, and I heard him say that everything needed to be finalized before the delivery date.""
"And?""
"He said that if anything happened to you during childbirth, the insurance would cover the remaining debt and the company would retain control of the house.""
My knees nearly gave out.
David caught my arm.
"Sarah, sit down.""
Vanessa rushed to explain.
"He said it was just a worst-case financial plan. I didn't understand what he meant.""
I looked at her.
"Did he say he wanted me dead?""
She shook her head.
"No. But yesterday, I heard him say something else.""
David's voice became dangerously quiet.
"What?""
Vanessa looked directly at me.
"He said he couldn't afford another delay. He said the baby needed to be born before the end of November, and that after that, you wouldn't be a problem anymore.""
My hand flew to my stomach.
Our daughter moved.
I wanted to believe there was another explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A cruel business plan.
Anything other than what my mind was beginning to consider.
Then David's attorney arrived.
He listened to Vanessa's account, examined the documents, and connected the USB drive to his laptop.
Within minutes, he found a folder containing dozens of files.
One was a scanned medical form.
Another was a financial authorization.
The last file was a document titled:
*POST-DELIVERY LEGAL TRANSFER — SARAH MERCER.*
David opened it.
I leaned over his shoulder.
The document stated that, following the birth of our daughter, Mark would assume full control of the marital property and associated financial accounts.
But it also contained a section about my medical condition.
It described me as someone with a history of emotional instability and questioned my ability to make independent decisions.
I had never been diagnosed with anything.
I had never been treated for anything.
Mark had invented an entire medical history.
James stopped scrolling.
"There's something you need to see.""
He opened the document properties.
The original file had been created six months earlier.
The author field contained Mark's name.
But the last modification had been made by someone else.
Someone who had inserted a new paragraph just two days before.
James enlarged the screen.
The paragraph read:
In the event of maternal incapacity or death, the child shall remain under the exclusive care and legal authority of the father pending further proceedings.
I couldn't breathe.
David stood behind me.
"He's building a case to take the baby.""
James nodded.
"And possibly positioning himself to control the estate if Sarah becomes medically incapacitated.""
Then he opened the email attached to the document.
There was one message from Mark to Richard Cole.
It contained only two sentences.
Make sure the doctor understands the importance of following our arrangement. The hospital already has the necessary authorization.
I looked at David.
"What arrangement?""
He was already reaching for his phone.
"James, contact the hospital. We need to verify every person listed on Sarah's medical file, every authorization, and every instruction submitted in her name.""
James nodded.
Then Vanessa suddenly stood.
"There's one more thing.""
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked at me with an expression I couldn't understand.
"Mark told me yesterday that he was meeting someone at the hospital.""
"Who?"" David asked.
"I don't know his full name.""
"Then tell us what you know.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"He called him Dr. Bennett.""
James froze.
David slowly lowered his phone.
I looked between them.
"What?""
James turned his laptop toward us.
He opened the hospital authorization form recovered from the clinic.
At the bottom was a physician's name.
*Dr. Thomas Bennett.*
And beside his name was a handwritten note:
Private arrangement confirmed. Proceed without notifying family.
I recognized the name.
Dr. Bennett was listed as the physician overseeing my scheduled delivery.
The same doctor who had examined me twice during the pregnancy.
The same doctor Mark had insisted I use.
David stared at the screen.
Then he looked at me.
"Sarah, we're changing your hospital immediately.""
But before he could make another call, James's phone rang.
He answered, listened for several seconds, and slowly stood.
"What happened?"" David demanded.
James covered the phone.
"The hospital just confirmed that someone accessed Sarah's maternity file this afternoon.""
My stomach dropped.
"Who?""
James looked at me.
"Dr. Thomas Bennett.""
Then he turned back to the caller.
"Was anything changed?""
A long silence followed.
Finally, James ended the call.
His face was pale.
"Someone has canceled Sarah's next prenatal appointment and submitted a request to move her delivery to a private facility.""
David's jaw tightened.
"Which facility?""
James looked down at the screen.
"Mercer Women's Surgical Center.""
I had never heard of it.
But David had.
He stared at the name as if he had just recognized something terrible.
"That's not a hospital," he said.
May you like
"It's a private medical facility owned by Mark's business partner.""
And suddenly, I understood why Mark had been so desperate to keep me away from everyone who might ask questions.
