Chapter 6: The Insurance Trap

The first thing David did was call the police.

The second thing he did was call his attorney.

The third thing he did was order everyone in the house to stay away from the windows.

I had never seen him so angry.

"David, what are you doing?""

He stood near the fireplace, speaking rapidly into his phone.

"Yes, I want the recording preserved. No, don't send it through ordinary email. Arrange a secure transfer directly to the investigator.""

He ended the call and turned toward me.

"That insurance policy is fraudulent.""

"I know.""

"No, Sarah. You don't understand what they've done.""

He placed the printed document in front of me.

"The beneficiary change makes it look as though I stand to profit if something happens to you.""

I looked at the paper.

The policy amount was two million dollars.

My brother's name appeared beneath it.

"But you would never...""

"I know. You know. But a document doesn't care what we know.""

He sat beside me.

"Mark may be trying to create a financial motive for someone to hurt you, then make it look like I was involved.""

My stomach twisted.

"Would the police believe that?""

"Not if we establish that the policy was altered without either of our consent.""

James joined us through a video call.

He had already contacted an insurance fraud specialist.

"There's good news," he said.

David raised an eyebrow.

"Let's hear it.""

"The insurance company has confirmed that the policy application was submitted electronically through an intermediary. They haven't issued the final contract.""

I exhaled.

"So it's not active?""

"Not yet. But the application contains forged documents, including Sarah's signature and David's alleged authorization.""

James continued.

"They've frozen the application pending verification.""

David nodded.

"Good. What about the original beneficiary?""

"Mercer Family Holdings. The later change to David's name was submitted from the same account that uploaded the forged medical authorization.""

I stared at the screen.

"Can they trace who submitted it?""

"They're working on that.""

Vanessa, sitting near the dining table, suddenly spoke.

"I know who has access to that account.""

Everyone turned toward her.

"Who?""

"Richard Cole.""

David leaned forward.

"Are you certain?""

"He manages the financial submissions for Mark's businesses. He has access to the electronic filing system.""

James wrote something down.

"Then Richard needs to be interviewed.""

Vanessa nodded.

"But there's something else. Richard isn't the person who makes the final decisions.""

"Who does?"" I asked.

She looked at me.

"Victor.""

A chill ran down my spine.

David stood.

"Tell us everything.""

Vanessa explained that Victor had been funding several of Mark's businesses through complicated investment arrangements.

Mark handled the public-facing operations.

Richard handled the financial paperwork.

Victor controlled the money.

Together, they had created a structure in which property could be transferred, loans could be taken out, and funds could move between companies without immediately attracting attention.

My inheritance had apparently entered that structure.

"Why would they need my house?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

"Because it was one of the last major assets Mark could transfer without Victor's approval.""

"But Mark owns half the house.""

"Not according to the original ownership records.""

David pulled up a property document.

"Sarah contributed the down payment from her inheritance. The house was purchased with her name holding a fifty-one-percent ownership interest.""

I stared at him.

"Fifty-one percent?""

"Yes. You asked me to help you review the purchase before the wedding. Remember?""

I did.

David had recommended a property attorney, and I had insisted on protecting my inheritance.

After our marriage, Mark told me the ownership arrangement had been changed for tax purposes.

I had never seen the updated documents.

"Did I ever sign a transfer?""

David shook his head.

"According to the original county records, no valid transfer has been registered.""

I covered my mouth.

"Then he doesn't own my share?""

"Not legally, based on what we've reviewed.""

For the first time that day, I felt a small spark of hope.

But James wasn't finished.

"There's another complication. Mark has submitted a separate document claiming Sarah voluntarily granted him power of attorney over her financial affairs.""

"That's forged, too," I said.

"I believe you. But we need the original application and a handwriting examination.""

David looked toward Vanessa.

"Do you have that document?""

She nodded.

"I think so.""

She opened her laptop and searched through several folders.

After a minute, she found it.

The document was dated five months earlier.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I leaned closer.

It looked almost perfect.

Almost.

Then I noticed something.

"That's not how I sign my name.""

David examined it.

"You're right.""

I pointed to the final letter.

"When I sign Sarah, I always connect the h to the a. This one doesn't.""

James asked for a high-resolution copy.

"That may help establish the forgery.""

Vanessa continued searching.

Then she found an email.

It was from Mark to Richard.

Use the signature sample from the mortgage file. Make the authorization look consistent with the previous documents.

David read it aloud.

Then he looked at me.

"He's been collecting your signatures.""

I remembered the strange questions.

The forms he had asked me to sign at home.

The packages he insisted I acknowledge.

The documents he placed beneath grocery receipts.

Every signature had been another opportunity for him to copy my handwriting.

I felt sick.

"How long has he been doing this?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

James interrupted.

"Wait. There's a reply.""

He enlarged the email.

Richard had written:

The medical authorization is more difficult. The hospital requires a separate confirmation. Victor says Bennett can handle that part.

David stood abruptly.

"That's enough. We're going to the police.""

James nodded.

"I've already arranged a meeting with the financial crimes investigator. Bring every original document and the recording.""

Before we could leave, the doorbell rang.

Mrs. Bennett appeared in the hallway.

"Mr. Collins, there's a woman outside asking to speak with Sarah. She says she's from the insurance company.""

David frowned.

"Did she show identification?""

"Yes. She has a badge.""

James immediately warned us not to allow anyone to enter without independent verification.

David approached the door but kept it closed.

"What's your name?""

"Laura Mitchell. I'm an investigator with the insurance company handling Mrs. Mercer's application.""

David asked her to show her credentials through the glass.

She did.

James called the company's official number and requested confirmation.

A few minutes later, he nodded.

"She's legitimate.""

David opened the door.

Laura entered carrying a leather folder.

"Mrs. Mercer, I apologize for the circumstances. We have discovered irregularities in your insurance application.""

She placed several pages on the table.

"Your application was submitted with a medical declaration stating that you had previously been diagnosed with a serious cardiovascular condition.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"That declaration was used to justify additional coverage and special beneficiary arrangements.""

"I've never had a heart condition.""

"We understand. That's why we're investigating.""

She turned another page.

"The application also contains a physician's report signed by Dr. Thomas Bennett.""

David leaned forward.

"Did you contact the hospital?""

"Yes. The hospital has not confirmed the report's authenticity.""

I shook my head.

"Why would Dr. Bennett lie?""

Laura hesitated.

"There's something else.""

She removed a photograph from the folder.

It showed Mark standing beside a man outside a restaurant.

The man was Dr. Bennett.

They were shaking hands.

Behind them stood Victor Hale.

Laura pointed to a date.

"This photograph was taken eleven days before the insurance application was submitted.""

I stared at the three men.

"Did they meet about the policy?""

"We don't know. But the financial records suggest payments were made to a consulting company associated with Dr. Bennett.""

David's expression hardened.

"How much?""

"Forty-five thousand dollars.""

The room fell silent.

I couldn't believe it.

A doctor I had trusted with my pregnancy might have accepted money from my husband.

Laura closed the folder.

"I recommend you avoid communicating with any of the individuals involved. We'll be referring the suspicious application to the appropriate authorities.""

After she left, David stood near the window.

For several minutes, he said nothing.

Then James called.

"The investigator has reviewed the recording. They want Vanessa to provide a formal statement.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I will.""

James continued.

"And Sarah, there's one more development.""

"What?""

"Richard Cole has contacted the police.""

David turned.

"Why?""

"He's claiming Mark forced him to submit the documents.""

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

"That's convenient.""

James continued.

"But Richard has offered to cooperate and provide the original files.""

David frowned.

"What does he want in exchange?""

"Protection from prosecution.""

I shook my head.

"Can we trust him?""

"No," James replied.

"But we can verify his evidence.""

A message suddenly appeared on David's laptop.

It was from an unknown sender.

The subject line read:

*YOU NEED TO SEE THIS BEFORE RICHARD TALKS.*

David opened the attachment.

It was a photograph of a handwritten note.

The handwriting was unmistakably Mark's.

If Sarah refuses to cooperate, move forward with the alternative plan. Victor will handle the hospital. Richard will handle the money.

Beneath it was another sentence.

David must take the blame before the baby is born.

I felt my knees weaken.

Then David noticed something in the lower corner of the photograph.

A date.

The note had been written two days before the slap outside Oak Creek Maternity Clinic.

He looked at me.

"Sarah, this wasn't a plan he made after you refused to sign.""

He enlarged the photograph.

"He already had everything arranged.""

And then my replacement phone rang.

The caller ID showed a private number.

I answered without thinking.

A man's voice came through.

"Mrs. Mercer?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Richard Cole.""

I froze.

He continued in a hurried whisper.

"I know you've seen the documents. I know Vanessa gave you the recording.""

I looked at David.

Richard's voice dropped even lower.

"Listen carefully. Mark doesn't know I'm contacting you.""

"Why are you calling?""

"Because the insurance application is only part of it.""

My throat tightened.

"What else?""

He paused.

Then he said something that made David reach for the phone.

"Your husband has already paid someone at the hospital to make sure your next appointment never takes place.""

The line crackled.

"Mr. Cole, who did he pay?""

But Richard was already speaking again.

"Sarah, you need to understand. The person Mark paid isn't Dr. Bennett.""

A door slammed somewhere on his end.

He whispered urgently.

May you like

"It's someone who has access to the maternity ward.""

Then the call disconnected.
